3 for 3? SVG lets the Spurs do his bench scouting.

Two summers back Stan Van Gundy offered former San Antonio Spur Aron Baynes $7 Million per year to be the back up center for the Pistons. The team hasn’t regretted the signing as Baynes began ably filling in when Andre Drummond needed a breather or the other team went into Haq-A-Drummond mode in his first year. Having success with Baynes, Van Gundy continues to dip into San Antonio’s former bench players with the signing of Boban Marjanovic and Ray McCallum to populate the Piston’s own. Will this be three for three?

The San Antonio Spurs are recognized as one of the best organizations in sports. Their coach Greg Popovich does not tolerate players with the wrong attitude or are not team players. While there are some players that the team takes chances on that eventually find their way off the team by being under Pop’s bad graces, in general players who go through San Antonio are far more likely to be good team players than any other team even if they may not be superstars or starter material. Marjanovic and McCallum fall under these categories with the former being the much more talented addition.

MacCallum was a player that the Spurs were a little high on as a backup point guard. They traded a second round draft pick for him. Sadly, he didn’t work out and was released. As he will be the third in line at the point guard position, for now he just has to show that he does a better job than last year’s version, Steve Blake.

Marjanovic is a far different story than McCallum. The Spurs would have gladly re-signed the massive 7-foot 3-inch 290 lb. fan favorite if not for their desire to add former MVP Kevin Durant or second option All-Star Pau Gasol who they eventually signed. The Pistons pounced early in free-agency making Boban an offer while the Spurs, and other teams, were still waiting for Durant’s decision. This move possibly forced the Spurs in essence to abandon matching the Pistons’ offer because they were saving their money for the far more accomplished players. Marjanovic’s stats, while averaging close to 10 minutes per game, came down to 21 points on over 60% shooting while hauling close to 14 rebounds, a steal and 1.6 blocks on a Per 36 Minute basis.

What do you think guys? Will Van Gundy’s targeting of former Spurs players to populate his bench continue to pay off?
