[...] Back to the point: I’m inclined to think that the Wizznutzz’ comments on Detroit were in jest… an emotionally charged reflex to our audacity at attacking their beloved Agent Zero (a name they dubbed him that has subsequently caught on). If that’s the case, then their slams on our city should be forgiven. In the absence of better material (more than regular-season wins over the Pistons can provide), the usually creative nutzz went by way of the Sacramento Kings or Rick Telander. Disappointing, but what else were they going to talk about? Let's see… Championship(s)? [...]

I find it funny that he has chosen to pick on Detroit's crime rate and unemployment when New Orleans--his preferred location for the Super Bowl had the same unfortunate problems pre-Katrina. Its just classless.

Honestly, this is plain ridiculous. Even if Detroit does have a high rate of crime, there aren't snipers waiting to pick you off as you drive into the city, and you don't need to be worried when going into a hotel full of people (and security), especially on a Super Bowl weekend. Sure, it is exaggeration to try and get others to laugh, but Detroit is absolutely nothing like that at all. I can't think of a single place that is.

From his column:

The NFL should remember that the Super Bowl is not just about football and advertising, but is also about vacations and sun in the middle of gloom.

At least, it should be. I believe strongly.

I'm tired of sportwriters bringing up this lame argument and using it to bash cities like Detroit, Jacksonville (it's too sprawled out!) and Houston (it's too rainy!) Being paid to cover a Super Bowl, whether it's played in San Diego or Nome, Alaska, is a luxury at least 99.999% of a newspaper's readers will never partake in, and it's ludicrous to think that any readers actually care if a reporter has to pack a parka instead of swim trunks.

For one fan's experience mingling with the national media, check out this post over at the Mickey Tettleton Memorial Overpass.
