[...] Like I alluded to above, the details as to how this one went down are inconsequential compared to how the Pistons are going to get by for the next 10-14 days with their All-Star point guard. And, in a cruel twist of fate, whoever starts at point guard for Detroit will be immediately compared to the cream of the crop, as reigning two-time MVP Steve Nash and the Suns arrive on Sunday afternoon for a New Years eve matinee at the Palace. The last time the Pistons faced the Suns, Chauncey outscored Nash 35 to 13 while leading Detroit to a win (which, coincidentally, was the win that officially clinched the No. 1 seed in the East for Detroit).
[...] Remember my handy little template for writing Pistons game recaps? The Pistons allowed the hot-shooting [insert opponent here] to take a commanding lead on [insert day of game], at one point trailing by as many as [insert largest deficit here] — at times [insert opponent's leading scorer] was simply unstoppable. In the end, however, the Boys in Blue withstood the charge, putting on the clamps in the second half before relying on [insert player here] to key a fourth-quarter rally. [...]

[...] Personally, I think this is a testament to McDyess' lack of ego (Eli Zaret would agree — he touched upon this in his latest post on Blue Collar Blueprint). Also, the silver lining to this is that Wallace will be well-rested for the upcoming Florida road trip: the Pistons travel to Miami on Thursday and Orlando on Friday. I mentioned this in passing on Sunday, but it's worth saying again — now that "the streak" is officially a non-issue, Saunders can give serious thought to completely resting his starters for the final game or two, at least if the team's lead over the Spurs for homecourt advantage in the NBA Finals holds up.
LA Mike -- no, you're right. Layups and dunks can be blamed on the defense, but the Suns were making just about everything else, too. Plus, I guess I just kind of expected an onslaught like that since that's what the Suns do to everyone. Not only that, their bench just kept unloading on us, too -- that's quite a deep team.

I guess I'm just giving the defense a pass for the first-half play 1) because it came against the Suns, and 2) they turned it on in the second half, which we're getting used to seeing.

"but in reality there's simply nothing that can be done when every guy on the opposing team is shooting the lights out. "

Lay-ups are a high percentage shot at any level of basketball.

The Suns had 13 lay-ups in the first half. 8 in the first quarter!

How can you not blame that on a pitiful Piston's defense in the first half?

According to McCosky's recap at the News, Sheed arrived about 15 minutes before tip-off -- arriving late and hitting the game traffic certainly compounded his forgetting to spring-forward. I haven't heard if there's anything else going on, but it's certainly extremely rare for a player to arrive that late. The fine isn't anything personal -- stuff like that is automatic with most teams.

Hey thanks for the recap.

i actually taped the game coz i was at work. when i watched it tonight, the abc announcers we commentin about how Sheed was late because of the time change but more so they were implyin that there was more to the story then whats being said. did you guys catch that? and if so what do you think?? they also said that he's going to get fined, but thats just the norm.
