Monday’s Layup Drill

  • Is it Cheick Samb or Cheikh Samb? Can we get a ruling? I see it spelled “Cheick” most of the time, but the Detroit News is using “Cheikh” — and this article from the website of the Spanish team he plays for actually uses both. In any case, the News has an interesting profile on the lanky project/prospect from Senegal.
  • Free agent rumblings from the Detroit News: the Pistons are going after Flip Murry, Chucky Atkins and Tony Delk with their bi-annual exception worth $3.5 million. If all else fails, trading for Brevin Knight is apparently an option, too.
  • From the same article: Terry Porter will probably join Detroit’s coaching staff if his bid to buy the Trailblazers fall through. Plus, Nik Caner-Medley (built “in the mold of Utah’s Matt Harpring”) is impressing in Vegas.
  • Drew Sharp thinks William Davidson is cheap.
  • Meet Nazr Mohammed.
  • Late addition — Flip versus Larry: The Cage Match (thanks for the heads up, YMCA Legend)

Getting Murray, Atkins or Delk doesn’t help us, or give us what we need. The following is the holes in our system:
Too few points in the paint.
Noone off the bench can run the offence.
    Develop young talent.

Now if we get any of them, all we get is more jump shooters and noone will take it to the basket when needed. We can fill that with Delfino. But now we need someone to run the offence. Enter Brevin Knight. I think he’d be a perfect fit. We get that guy who knows how to run an offence and he can score when called upon. This also helps the last point. To aquire Knight we’d trade Davis which leaves one roster spot open that we’d have filled with a FA. We can use that for one of the rookies from last year and slowly give them minutes to see what they can do, and what can they contribute to the team.
So Knight shouldn’t be the backup plan, he should be the one we go after first and foremost.
Flip go and give Delfino and the young guys time to develop and you’ll seem like a genius come June.

I couldn’t agree with you more, Matt. Brevin Knight is a perfect fit for our needs. I remember hearing rumors that we were looking at him before the trade deadline last season. I was thrilled- he’d bring to our team what we don’t have in our back-up PG.

    Check these stats:
Last season, he was #1 in the league in steals:

He was #3 in the league in Assists, chauncey was #4:

I agree- Brevin Knight should be our first priority here, over Murray, Atkins, or Delk. He’s an un-selfish, high energy point guard with a nack for ripping the ball and leading hot plays.

Question- if you were Brevin Knight, would you leave a starting position in Charlotte to join the Pistons bench?

  3. 3 Matt Gibson

well its not really his decision, since he’ll be traded. He doesn’t get much choice. But if I were him I would so I have a chance to win a championship.

  4. 4 Warthog

I’d trade Davis for Knight, and then sign Cato to do the job that Davis was here for last year.

  5. 5 Fadel

I don’t even think Charlotte is willing to give up Knight. I mean, who’s going to run their offense if he leaves?

However it goes, Knight is the best choice for the Pistons now. Chucky Atkins would be another jump shooter who doesn’t know how to run an offense (like Lindsey Hunter). Tony Delk was seldom used in the playoffs, so I think we can dump him to give Carlos Delfino more minutes to prove himself. If we go after Flip Murray then we all know Delfino’s minutes would disappear. If the Pistons seriously want to develop this kid, they must play him.

Again, if I was Dumars, I would try hard to get Brevin Knight or some other “true” point guard.

I think the bench would be solid with Dice, Delfino, and Knight.

Fadel — the Bobcats could just hand the reins to Raymond Felton, their top draft pick from a year ago and their point guard of the future. I’m not sure if they’d want Dale Davis enough to pull the trigger, but I’d definitely be all about this.

  7. 7 Matt Gibson

we’d probably give them davis and our first round pick(and keep the orlando first round) and maybe even acker/blalock or a second round pick. I dont mind if we do b/c we got enough young guys.

I agree. But seeing what amir johnson and/or maxiell can do should be a priority imo. Resigning cato would be a step back. The pistons are in a transition right now, and signing 30 something stopgaps every offseason seems ridiculous to me.

I love Brevin Knight’s game but Dale Davis is an expiring contract. We may want his 3.5mil salary to go to resigning Billups.

what ever we do chauncy needs more rest.

The bench issues with this team interest me more than anything. Dice and Hunter will for sure play. With Evans gone plus Dumars’ verbal support, I think Delfino with get somewhere around 15 mins. But who else? Does Maxiell get 10 mins./game at the four spot when Sheed or Dice move to center while Nazr rests on the bench? Does Amir Johnson impress the coaches enough in summer league/preseason to spell Rip for 10-12 mins.?

I have no clue what happens at point guard. The Knight trade possibilities plus the Blaylock pick proves that the Pistons would rather have Hunter play SG on offense. I’d love Knight coming off the bench, but I don’t know what Charlotte wants for him. Though I’m not sure I would give up the Orlando pick for him in what’s supposedly a deep draft

I really hope that Delfino is ready to play next year. I like the idea of adding Knight to our team. We should not add guys just to add them. Flip Murray is not the answer and I hope we don’t add him. He showed me nothing when we played them in the playoffs
