[...] Also spotted on True Hoop: interesting viewpoints on Dave Cowens, the newest addition to Flip Saunders bench. Basketbawful takes issue with his promotion back to the big boys league after a dismal 5-23 season in the WNBA while Charley Rosen calls him the dirtiest player of all time: the dirtiest player in NBA history was Dave Cowens. Yes, he was skilled. Yes, he was tough. Yet his all-out aggressiveness was frequently mindless and downright sadistic. (In a bar-fight while he was in college, Cowens once bit off a large piece of an antagonist's nose.) Cowens, more than any of his predecessors, was considered by his contemporaries to be the one player whose over-the-top brutality was most likely to send an opponent to the hospital.
After interviewing for the Knicks job (even if it was Isiah throwing an old teammate a bone) and winning two titles in four years with the Shock, I have to believe that Laimbeer is holding out for something better than an assistant coaching position.

His "aw shucks" demeanor doing color for Pistons games aside, he proved with his little feud with ESPN during the WNBA Finals that his competitive fire is still as strong as ever. I'm guessing he'll be coaching in the NBA within three years, if not sooner. But the way the Pistons have gone through head coaches lately, I'd actually prefer he get his feet wet in the men's game elsewhere so he can continue to establish his coaching chops a little bit more.
