Joe D was and is one of my all time favorite basketball players. Why? His stats are great but more importantly, he has ALWAYS been a model of sportsmanship! Our Bad Boys were fun to watch, but off and on court Joe has been a role model. He accepted the personal responsibility that his position held toward the public. That is why we say he has such class! I would rather admire a gentleman than a guy who has tremendous skill on the court, but whose personal behavior and lifestyle is not one most normal, hard working, moral valued person would condone. Let's be real, most of us are pretty ordinary people living pretty normal lives. Joe D holds the core values that most of us were brought up with and didn't let the money and fame taint his character.

Sidney Moncrief was every bit the player Joey D was ... except for that whole NBA champion thing. I heard they were going to name the Sportsmanship award after a Celtic but gave up when the only person they could find embodying the appropriate values was Alvin Murphy, a ballboy from the 1956 tram.

Well said, Kimbal. In particular, I think Dumars' defense was underrated -- it's hard to statistically quantify everything that a player does in the context of a team defense, in particular when matched up against a player like Michael Jordan. You could argue that Dumars was the difference between Jordan scoring 30 versus 50 on more than a few occasions. It was the difference between winning and losing, but there's not a column for it in the box score.

Another thing to remember, it isn't "The Hall Of Statistical Accomplishment", it is the Hall of Fame! It is tough to quantify JD's leadership qualities, his defensive excellence and his fine character but those are all factors in his election. As a Bull's fan, I thought that Dumars was the Piston's best player and the one that made it hardest for the Bulls to win games against them.

Yes, one doesn't officially consider the post-playing career part of a player's life. If so, what Joe has done after taking off the jersey is almost as impressive as what he accomplished on the hard courts. He is arguably the finest, certainly one of the finest, executives in the NBA and his team has been a standard of excellence for the last few years. Detroit is doubly blessed in that Dumars works for them, and conversely that Isiah Thomas does NOT!
