Ghostbuster’s Ecto 1 for sale

After commenting on the DeLorean for sale, I had to say something about this: you can buy the original Ghostbuster’s Ecto 1 for just $150,000.

The Ghostbusters Ecto 1 for sale is not the original movie car. It is a very accurate replica, built on a slightly different 1959 Cadillac ambulance. The one in the movie was a Miller-Meteor “combination” coach: used as both a hearse and ambulance. The one for sale is a 1959 Cadillac S&S combination. A subtle difference, but significant enough to disprove it’s authenticity. Just thought you ought to know. Most people believe it is the actual one from the movie. Unfortunately, the real Ecto 1 (and Ecto 1a from Ghostbusters 2) is sitting in an open lot at Sony Studios in California, rotting away. Sony won’t let anyone see it, let alone entertain any offers ($150,000 seems high for this one, but the real one would probably be worth a mint more).

Oh man, that’s a bummer — I can’t believe they’re letting the original just rot away.

Yeah, there’s actually a movement to rescue these cars. I have come to understand that Sony has given the Ecto 1 a light refurb and it is now being shown as a part of the tour at Sony Studios. Also, the builder of the Ecto 1 replica that is currently for sale is George Barris, the guy who built the original Batmobile and a host of other famous movie cars. He claims to be the driving force behind the creation of the car, although as far as I am aware he had nothing to do with the original.
