(First things first: Wow, they’re just letting anyone post on Pistons.com these days — take a look at what this guy had to say.)
OK, I’ve had this idea kicking around my head for a while, and I think it could be fun. As evident by the conversations we’ve been having in the comments lately, it seems like we all have a theory about what the Pistons will (or should) do. So let’s add a dash of accountability to this and see who really knows what they’re talking about.
In the comments to this post, I want you to predict what the entire 15-man roster will look like come Opening Night 2007. We’ll award points for every correct player, with the number of points determined by how a player is added to the roster. It’ll work like this:
- 1 point = a current player already on the roster. We already know who’s on the roster, so you don’t earn bonus points for going with the status quo.
- 2 points = a first-round pick from the June 28th draft. There’s a realistic pool of only 5-6 players who might be picked at No. 15, so no huge points for getting that right. Granted, nailing that No. 27 pick will be tough, but I wanted to stay consistent.
- 3 points = a free agent. There are a lot of free agents out there, and since every team in the league is theoretically a suitor, you get more points for correctly guessing that.
- 4 points = a player acquired via a trade; or, a second-round pick, Trades are worth the most points because those often come out of nowhere (and unlike free agents, it’s not like there’s an official list of “who is on the block.”) Also, it’s harder to pinpoint who the second-round pick will be, and even if you got that right, it’s even more difficult to correctly guess that he’ll actually win a roster spot.
To head off any potential confusion, let’s clarify some ambiguous players/situations:
- Since Chauncey Billups has already opted-out, he’ll be worth 3 points if he re-signs.
- Since Amir Johnson is a restricted free agent, he’ll be worth 3 points if he re-signs.
- Antonio McDyess hasn’t opted out, but (I think) there’s still technically a chance that he could. If he does and ends up re-signing, he’ll be worth 3 points. If he signs an extension without actually opting out first, he’ll only be worth 1 point. (And, of course, if he doesn’t sign an extension nor opts-out, he’ll be worth 1 point.)
- Alex Acker played in Europe last year but is technically still a restricted free agent, so if he ends up coming back and re-signs, he’ll be worth 3 points.
- Chiekh Samb was a second-round pick who never signed a contract, so if he finally signs he’ll be worth 3 points.
- Sign-and-trades: we’re going with the spirit of the rule instead of the letter of the law. (This might cause confusing down the line, so I reserve the right to make a judgment call on scoring if needed.) Basically, if the Pistons want to sign a guy who’s currently a free agent, but the only way they can acquire him is through a sign-and-trade, the player in question will be awarded 3 points as a free agent. However, any players already under contract who are included to make the salaries work will be worth 4 points as a player acquired via trade.
- This is unlikely, but if we traded for another or different first-round pick, he’ll be worth 6 points (2 for being a pick, 4 for being acquired via a trade).
So what’s at stake? The person(s) with the most points will earn eternal bragging rights here at DBB, as well as a guest post, if they so choose. I’ll also put up a DBB T-shirt of the winner’s choosing (though if there are more than two winners, I’m drawing names in a hat, since I’d go broke in the case of a massive 15-way tie for first place).
Also, and this is important, only the first unique combination will count, so read everyone else’s entries first and make sure yours is different. And you can only enter once (though if you realize after the fact someone already posted the same entry as you, we’ll bend the rules and let you enter again). To make it easier on me to check these later, try to follow the format I used in my entry. Comments on this post will close Thursday afternoon, so get your entry in now!

(Note: I’m mostly going with the status quo, in part because it’s a “safe” entry and no longer eligible to be used — so get creative!)

I’m not playing just yet, but I have to say that I was completely fooled by your modest intro. I thought for sure that there was some dumb schmuck writing on pistons.com, and that you were mocking the website for including it, but then I read the article. Nice article - kudos to you, Matt.

Well, since the safe answer isn’t gonna win me a Jason Maxiel Eats Babies T-shirt, here goes:
PG
Chauncey Billups - 3 pts
Dan Dickau (Aquired in a trade with Portland for some signed pictures of Ruth Riley saying Shock4Lyfe… Dumars justifies 2.2 million dollar salary by saying “Anytime you get an opportunity to sign a guy named Dickau, you just can’t pass that up. Me and Flip have been making rude jokes about this weeks before the FA period started. Our number one target”) - 4pts
Pistol Pete Maravich (Aquired through abuse of the dark arts and the sacrifice of a live member of the Automotion. Dumars defends the move saying “he’s a gifted 3 ball shooter”.) - We’ll call that 6 points for now.
SG
Rip Hamilton (Who abruptly retires in December due to injuries sustained while ripping that stupid mask off his face and throwing it into the crowd after being called for a charge) - 1 pt
Kobe Bryant (Aquired in a deadline trade with LA for the Tampa Bay Lightning franchise and both our first round picks to replace Hamilton. Only available after Dr Jerry Buss is finally driven completely insane with Bryant following him around by private jet and popping up unanounced to scream “TRADE ME YOU LIAR!!!!” while Buss is dating 20 year old models.) - 4 pts
Latrell Sprewell (Aquired after Dumars admitts Flip could use a good talking to about his in game adjustments during a mid Feburary slump) - 3pts
Alex Acker (Finally given a chance to play when Hamilton gets injured and averages 25 points, 8 assists and 5 steals a night on an 8 game road trip. Promptly moves to the end of Saunders’ bench when Bryant arrives and never plays another min.) - 3 pts
Small Forward
Shawn Marion (Aquired in a pre-season deal for Rasheed Wallace and Tayshaun Prince. When asked why he’d trade two starters for one, Dumars admitted he was tired of watching Tim Duncan win championships too and figured Phoenix had the best chance of stoping the Spurs.) - 4pts
Luka Bogdanovic (Drafted in the second round, Dumars cites his tremendous potential and a strong recomendation from the Piston’s crack Serbia-Montengro scout team. Flip Saunders declares his future “very bright indeed” on draft night, but nails the rook to the bench as Shawn Marion plays 48.03 mins a night)- 4pts
Darvin Ham (Aquired for bus fare at all star break. Dumars “shocked” he was available) - 3pts
Power Forward
Amir Johnson - 1pt
Jason Maxiel - 1pt
Cheryl Ford (Brought in after the Hamilton retirement to provide cap friendly backup mins when it’s discovered a rare loophole means her WNBA salary of 7 dollars per season wouldn’t count against the cap.) - 1pt (Already technically employed by the Pistons.)
Larry Johnson’s Grandmama (Signed as a free agent after absolutely destroying Nazr Mohammed infront of team scouts in a one on one drill. Saunders declares her future “very bright indeed” but never actually plays her in a game.) - 3pts
Center
Nazr Mohammed (Nobody would take him, even for medical tape) - 1pt

That’s 39 possible points.
I don’t think all or even most of these deals will happen but it’s worth the same to get one free agent pick right as it is to keep Blaylock, Dupree, and Murray on the roster. Maybe the tie-breaker should be the highest number of players on the roster, then pick names out of a hat.
Blalock, not Blaylock. I must have had Mookie on my mind.
joejoejoe has Detroit signing everyone and their mothers to the team…
I normally would join in on the fun, but jesus christ, there’s a lot of numbers to crunch and I got confused just reading the rules.
just send me a copy of the Detroit Pistons championship dvds!
To my credit, it’s REALLY no more crazy than the crap Chris Sherridan comes up with at 3AM while playing NBA Live and later calls “Insider Info” on ESPN
Honestly everyone seems pretty sure about this Grant Hill thing, and I question that to be honest. I just don’t understand what we get out of this deal at this point. Hill can score still, when he can walk… I’m just not sure why we want to throw millions after a guy who may or may not spend half the post season in a boot. Seems unwise, I know I’m advocating change but not “just cause”… and Grant Hill definately feels like a “just cause” move. At this point and with these prices I’m half tempted to say we should just wait for the upcoming 60 cents on the dollar fire sale that EVERYONE knows is gonna happen this trade deadline (2008). It worked before, and overpaying now for Grant Hill, Shawn Marion or some guy named Steve Blake (who seems to be listed as the favorite fan choice on every team website message board in the NBA for “our open backup PG spot”… who knew the league was short 28 backup PG… not I) doesn’t strike me as wise when we can just wait for someone to dump.. I mean even Moe Pete is talking about getting a raise, and when Garbojossa (can’t spell that sorry) went down the Raptors were OPENLY wondering if he was in good enough shape or even interested enough in trying to take the kids spot. NJ proved he wasn’t. And THIS guy is due for a raise? Someone beg Joe to wait, the prices are too high right now.

dont ask me how nazr leaves.
I’m less interested in predicting what the Pistons will do and more interested in speculation on what they SHOULD do.
Trade Nazr for Brevin Knight (Charlotte gets insurance for a gimpy Okafor, we get a good backup PG with a shorter contract). I’m not sure if this trade fits with all of the NBA’s weird rules but the salaries match.
Trade Rasheed for Andrew Bynum and Kwame Brown (Lakers get to keep Odom and become a contender, Pistons get who I think will be a good young center to team up with Amir and Kwame’s expiring contract).
In addition, Lindsay and Dale Davis go elsewhere or retire. McDyess is not extended and chooses to go elsewhere.
Also, Chauncey is resigned. And Pistons draft the best players available (regardless of position) with 15 and 27th pick.
I actually don’t mind James’ post… if this is the same James from when I can remember though, I seem to remember him making posts that make me slap my hand against my forehead and saying “James, what are you thinking?!?!?!”
a lineup of Billups, McGrady, Prince would be pretty disgusting… and exactly what Detroit needs at the 2 guard spot… a guy who can CREATE!
How come nobody is on the same bandwagon?!?!?! Hamilton is the weakest link on the floor, if he doesn’t move the whole team stinks on offense… dump him and get someone who can create, and the rest of the guys will benefit from it.
Then again, if DET got the rest of the guys James says they will get, they’d be the overwhelming favorites in the East, as long as Bonzi Wells doesn’t whore them.
I guess this is a worst-case scenario in a way, at least regarding current starters leaving. Say Chauncey Billups opts out, Chris Webber retires, and Rasheed Wallace gets traded.
So the returning centerpieces of the new-look Pistons will be:
Richard Hamilton (1)
Tayshaun Prince (1)
Jason Maxiell (1)
Nazr Mohammed (1)
Lindsey Hunter (1)
Trade Rasheed to the Lakers…in return for:
Andrew Bynum (4)
Jordan Farmar (4)
Kwame Brown (4)
This then gives the Pistons some players to develop at point guard and center…unfortunately they all go away after one season. Letting Kwame walk after ‘07-’08 will give the Pistons some contract room to pursue the impressive ‘08 free agent class, although some of it will probably be eaten up trying to re-sign Bynum. Having another star in LA will also make Kobe happy…or give the Lakers a bit of a replacement for him if he leaves.
Returning free agents:
Antonio McDyess (1)
Amir Johnson (3)
Will Blalock (1)
Letting Davis and Murray leave will allow the team to get younger and open up some spots. Dupree is a tossup, but he seems to have a dead end right now.
Draft picks:
Rodney Stuckey (2)
Nick Fazekas (2)
We’ll say the 2nd-round pick doesn’t get a roster spot, since I don’t see anyone I like that much around 57. I don’t know that much about Stuckey, but I keep hearing his name associated with the Pistons and I don’t see anyone much better at the 15 (Crittenton is probably a reach). Fazekas is also a reach…but they’ll be pretty set at guard and he can be a good shooting big man off the bench, taking a little bit of Rasheed’s old role (albeit minus the defense…but that’s what Maxiell is there for).
Free agents:
Morris Peterson (3)
The old MSU star from Flint would make for an instant fan favorite in Detroit.
So a tentative lineup with this group would look something like:
PG-Farmar
SG-Hamilton
SF-Prince
PF-McDyess
C-Bynum
Bench: Peterson, Maxiell, Mohammed, Johnson, Brown, Hunter, Stuckey, Fazekas, Blalock
The starting five wouldn’t be as mind-blowing as the current one…but this team could easily go all the way down the bench with little to no drop-off. They could easily go with an offensive look of Farmar, Hamilton, Peterson, Fazekas, Bynum…or defensive with Hunter, Hamilton, Prince, Maxiell, McDyess/Bynum/Mohammed. A team this deep could handle the similarly-deep Spurs in the finals, or pretty much whoever else you throw at them. It’s certainly a different look…but I like it.
Oh, and that lineup is worth 29 points.

basically blowing the team up. this is just for fun or what i wish the pistons would do.

total: 44 points
trades:
1. sending rip and dupree to celtics for tony allen and luke ridnour. celtics get experience and pistons get an athelet who can create his own shots which is what pistons needs. and a back up pg for billups. dunno if the salary and stuff matchs up but probably not likely that this will happen but tony allen is one of my favorites so i wish he could play for the pistons
2. sending webber and the 15th pick to minnesota for the 7th pick. lol another imppossible trade? dunno why minnesota would do this. but this is just for fun.
3. flip and nazr to suns for raja bell. another 3 point shooter even tho pistons is pretty decent at the 3 point line already
4. blalock for eddie jones. probably impossible too but heat needs a back up pg maybe they can develope blalock
FA:
1. Grant Hill
2. Jacque Vaughn
lol all the trades are like impossible but thats what my somewhat realistic dream team would be like. i think the team looks great on paper but i dunno if it will work. i think they could go all the way but dunno if everything will work out. leave me some comment please. haha i wanna hear what people think.

Boney,
I think being removed from Detroit has helped me requaint myself with reality so to speak.
In the off-season speculation thread, I posted that a trade of sheed and rip for bonzi and mcgrady would work out well for both teams giving Houston the best front court and Detroit the best backcourt among a number of other benefits for both teams. What you’d really need inside is energetic big men who are willing to crash the boards and do what they need to do to get offensive rebounds (Nazr was actually brought in for this and Amir and Maxiell would do a good job in these roles as well).
The three point game would open up for tay and chauncey as mcgrady would draw doubles and take the ball to the hoop and the big men would be able to hold their own against an Eastern Conference which is particularly weak in the front-court.
I really think the trade would work out well for Houston as well who would have Yao and Rasheed next to each other while offering a consistent scorer who could run off all the screens he wanted to.
Not to mention Houston and Detroit are really (the Mavs were simply dumbstruck by Golden State) completely disappointed in their seasons and truly feel like they completely underachieved. Most of that falls on McGrady on Houston’s side as he vowed to get his team past the Jazz in Game 7 and failed to do so. Not to mention Houston has already fired their coach…
I think you are all crazy! come on now. Nobody would trade their all star back court and start fresh. im glad none of you are sitting in dumars seat. holy cow. . . sheer disappointment in all a yal!

“Jordan Farmar is the answer? I guess Jon Kitna isn’t the only one smoking that stuff up in Detroit”
Are you somehow implying that the Lions will not score 40 points a game and go 14-2?
You sir are just a hater. *Wink*
Also, I do believe Ben may have a point… while this is really fun, I’m pretty damn glad none of you are on the phone with Danny Ainge and Steve Kerr as we speak
The one REALLY good idea I saw in here imho was getting Jermaine O’Neil, though I’m not rightly sure we could afford him to be honest. But Indiana has been in “stupid” mode trying to fix their team for like a whole year now… so if we could somehow just get Larry to bite at 60 cents on the dollar… but I mean would even Isiah trade the former Franchise player to a stronger rival in his own division?
unlikely.
