It's decision time for JoeD and he has to decide what direction to go in. He needs to let go of players either through free agency or trade, i.e. Dale Davis, Nazr Mohammed, Flip Murray, maybe a package deal. Convince Linsey to come back. Gain an inside threat in the draft at 15 or 27. If Acie Law IV falls to 15 take him, otherwise get a slasher. Re-sign Chauncey and give McDyess a big, two year contract (or three if you must). Make him happy. I don't think we are over valueing him.Although I'm a big McDyess fan he can't carry the bench. Get Maxiele and Amir in more and get a scorer, MoPete/ Grant Hill (unless Murray can turn it around). Blalock and Alex Acker can fight for a spot. I hope this Cheik Samb guy we got from LA can be good. Unless you can find a good center, convince C-Webb to stay. Give him a nice, two year deal. If he can produce like he was when he first got here, mid-season, we'll be in good shape. This year will be the defining year for Flip Saunders. If he doesn't produce, he'll be fired and into college he goes. This year's draft well be the defining moment for JoeD and the Pistons. Their future as a contnding team hangs in the balance.

Look, I'm not exactly sure Chauncey has earned the pile of money he's about to get either. The fact is he's NOT as good as the best distributor PGs in the game. On the other hand, take a good look around at the NBA and the general situation at PG. EVERYONE is pretty much screwed, and almost nobody has 2 PG they are happy with. Are ya'll ready to be the Atlanta Hawks, because thats what we are without Chauncey or a viable replacement. A collection of talented 4's, a freak SF and a very good SG. We're gonna pay him, because we have no other options and haven't developed a viable backup in the past 4 years (this does fall on Joe). 12, 13, 15... really it'd probably take at least 16 million to make Joe D even think about not matching. He's also probably getting 6 years which is NUTS at his age, but has become the standard for keeping your FA in the NBA. Yes its dumb, but the corperate climate of the NBA indicates we have zero choice. It's also really important for the fans putting their hopes into pick 15 as a replacement for Chauncey that it takes TWO years to develop a top flight PG, very very very few rookies are ready for the sheer responsibility that position entails. Even if Law falls into our laps its WAY WAY more likely that he'll be the next Deron Williams (2nd year breakout) than Chris Paul (first year breakout). Chauncey may be a fat cat, and there may be no way out of his contract eventually being considered "awful" as he ages, but the Pistons are out of options.

With all that having been said it becomes clear that keeping Dyees is a good idea anyways. You're going to want to milk him, Chauncey and Sheed for another title run, maybe two and then essentially reload with Maxiel/Johnson/Prince/These two picks or whoever works out in the system as starters in year 3 when you're taking large cap hits and letting Sheed walk.

Honestly guys, I'm not exactly in the "worshiping at Joe Dumars' feet" camp, but anyone saying we should let Chauncey walk just isn't looking at all the facts. I'm NOT ready for a top 5 lottery pick unless we steal it in a trade.

Regardless of how Dallas did against GState they are still "looking to go all the way". Your telling me they wouldn't have fared better with McDyess playing next to Dirk when they had to go "small"?? He's a huge upgrade over Dampier and Croshere and maybe even Diop.

Oberto from SA is a RFA. He's a bit on the older side and makes about 2.5M. He looked pretty good during the playoffs, pretty active and mobile. Something to look into maybe, we need someone at the 5 spot.

Boney, he's not a slouch, but he's not someone you sign for $5+ million a year for 3+ years.

He's been incredibly lucky and durable in Detroit. Even if you put aside his knee injuries, it's unrealistic to think that trend will continue. And then of course, he's a slow starter each season, he goes through shooting slumps, he doesn't have a low post game and he doesn't like to start.

If Dice was someone else's FA and Joe signed him for the MLE this summer, I would feel let down.

Microwave, you don't think Dyess would get MLE? I don't think he's a superstar anymore, but he's not a slouch.

I agree with most, that Chauncey Billups is a fat cat man. He is the primary player in need of the attitude adjustment Joe referred to. I saw desire from Rip and Sheed (not saying they had their best series in the world) but I saw passion. I think Lebron just kicked Tay's ass on both ends of the floor. So I think he was just overwhelmed. Mr. Big Shot has been reading his own press too much. I don't think his game has really improved since '04. But Rip & Tay I think you see a little growth each year. That being said, we still have to keep him because he is a Top 5 point guard in this league. I wouldn't pay him the max though. Chauncey wouldn't get more than $13M from me. If someone offers $14M, I'd match but not more than that. Hopefully Acee Law or Critenton (GA Tech PG) is available at 15 for a nice insurance policy in case someone offers Chauncey a boat load of cash.

If McDyess plays the entire Game 5 of the ECF, the Pistons may have won that series. I am not saying that he is the best 6th man in the league but with his size, rebouding and shot blocking, he would be hard to replace on the bench.

Chauncey will sign and so will McDyess.

Antonio was really the only Piston after the Cleveland series to address the needed attitude change. His hunger and desire are things that the Pistons should look to retain not release.

My comment is off the topic of this particular issue, yet it definitely relates to what this website should be on topic with right now. The NBA draft is two days away and there has been nearly no talk about it. How can you consider this a devoted Pistons website when you don't discuss an event that will affect the future of the team?

Really not seeing the problem here. Chauncey is coming back to Detroit, all Dyees is saying is that he wouldn't stick around for a rebuild which is fair when you're well past 30 and playing on a knee that might blow at any time. The fact is Dyees is one of our better players and doesn't mind coming off the bench or playing a defensive/secondary role... thats valuable in the NBA, even if alot of fans don't seem to realize it. He has every right at this point in his career to say "I'm not coming back if we're not going to try to win a championship", which is exactly what not resigning Chauncey would be saying at this point. Even IF you were going to blow the team up (which Dumars isn't going to do), why would you keep Dyees around in that scenario anyways? On the other hand, if you ARE resigning Chauncey (Joe D says he is) then can you honestly tell me we have 14 other players better than Dyees? He'll be a Piston in 2007-08, guarenteed.

This is really not even news, no offence to Mr Wilson intended (though I think he said as much himself).

Chauncey is coming back to Detroit, all Dyees is saying is that he wouldn’t stick around for a rebuild which is fair when you’re well past 30 and playing on a knee that might blow at any time. The fact is Dyees is one of our better players and doesn’t mind coming off the bench or playing a defensive/secondary role… thats valuable in the NBA, even if alot of fans don’t seem to realize it. He has every right at this point in his career to say “I’m not coming back if we’re not going to try to win a championship”, which is exactly what not resigning Chauncey would be saying at this point. Even IF you were going to blow the team up (which Dumars isn’t going to do), why would you keep Dyees around in that scenario anyways? On the other hand, if you ARE resigning Chauncey (Joe D says he is) then can you honestly tell me we have 14 other players better than Dyees? He’ll be a Piston in 2007-08, guarenteed.

Sorry but did you read the post? McDyess doesnt need the money at all. He wants a championship. Which if Chauncey leaves, he would have a better chance at winning one going someplace like Phoenix or Dallas or San Antonio. With what he could bring to a team looking to go all the way, teams would line up for him.
