The competition for Grant Hill is stiff, but Morris Peterson wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize. In fact, I’m not sure the Pistons wouldn’t be better off making MoPete their No. 1 target for their vacant backup small forward job — he’s five years younger without any injury concerns. (What about Gerald Wallace? Despite Detroit’s reported interest, I don’t see why he’d settle for less money, let alone a backup job, to be a Piston.)

It’d be awesome if we could get him, but at the current asking price for mediocre SF types (see Kappano and Walton for example) is umm… off the chain.
I like Mo alot, I think he’d help Detroit alot. He isn’t worth the MLE though, and if those guys just got 6 and 5 respectively, he’s going to want that much too.
Not entirely sure what the plan is at this point, but I’m starting to think it doesn’t involve paying ANYONE we’ve ever heard up 5 million + a year to back up Tay.
why isn’t he worth the MLE? his last season as a starter (05-06) he put up nearly 17 points a game.
someone will give MoPete a good chunk of their MLE. someone will overpay him just like CLE did when they signed “specialists” Donyell Marshall and Damon Jones.
Boney, I live in Toronto and I guess it’s because I’ve seen him up close to be honest.
Mo Pete is a great player when fit and motivated. He’s felt unhappy and unwanted in the New Raptorverse for a little while now and as such spent much of last season looking “puffy and disinterested” (direct quote from the Toronto Star right after GabajoslikeIcanspellthat went down).
So lemme rephrase “Mo Pete MIGHT be worth the MLE, but I’m not sure he’s such a sweet deal for the Pistons at that price unless it comes with a guarentee he’ll actually show up in shape and ready to play.”
And yes I agree very much SOMEONE is going to overpay Mo Pete, that’s pretty much what I was saying right from the hop. I’m just no longer hoping it’s the Pistons. Now at 4.5, which is what he’s making now… i’d consider it a really good idea.
I think he’d be “generous” enough to play for a hometown discount in Detroit, especially considering he’s at or around 30 years old right now and he’s only been the playoffs what, twice in his career?
He looked puffy and disinterested much like Mehmet Okur did in his days with the Pistons after they acquired Rasheed Wallace. It’s only natural to get down on yourself after you’ve been a contributor and they hire all new management to come in and implement their brand of basketball on the team.
It’s hard to be interested when you’re basically 3rd on the depth chart behind guys who’ve never really proven themselves in the NBA (Garbajosa, and who, Stephen Graham?). MoPete isn’t in the best condition to play that style of up tempo “international” basketball with Anthony Parker, Garbajosa and Bargnani. But he is in good enough shape to maybe take an MLE from a team like Miami where the offense is run through one guy (DWade) who kicks out the passes to the open 3s… oh wait, that’s the kind of offense he was in when VC was in Canada.
he can play that fast style, but I doubt he likes it very much. He just gave up after the enormous amount of mintues he played during the 2006 season..i think he was 7th in minutes for the whole league, because other players didn’t want to play defence.
he has a tendency to be overlooked, and a tendency to play badly during his contract years…at least he doesn’t inflate his numbers, and get a rich contract the next yr with another team like some people he knew..ahem..mike james?
whatever ppl say about him, the guy doesn’t complain and bad mouth ppl in public, and there is a reason why he stayed with one team his whole career, through crazy players and coaches and pathetic management. Because he was the one nice guy. Time to move on mo!
Oh and who wouldn’t be pissed after being overlooked by the likes of fred jones(traded), joey graham(dumb as rocks, and benched during the playoffs) and juan dixon who is too damn short to play a sg. Playoffs are what matter, and he hit some timely shots along with great defence.
Kappono led the NBA in 3pt percentage last year and Walton emerged as a guy who contributes in many categories of the stat-box. Mo pete had a down year. I don’t think he’ll get that kind of money. I think he’ll get close but not a full MLE. 4.5 is right about what Id expect. Also you have to believe playing in front of his friends and family would help motivate him. Besides if you can’t get hill and don’t want mo pete… than who?
I just read that Rashard Lewis agreed to a max deal with orlando. The magic will definately be tough next year. Also sounds like they’re letting Darko go… any takers?
Jason, naw I want Mo Pete… just looking at the contracts going round early and I’m not sure we can AFFORD MoPete. Thats all.
I’d love him at 4.5, but at 6 (See the guy replacing him)? No way.
Frankly though “then what” is actually a much better option than you think… “Then what” = Play with what we have till the trade deadline and then absolutely fleece someone who’s panicing because they won’t make the playoffs.
Yeah… the Magic are going to be tough with Lewis.
But as for us… MoPete would be a great addition. But I think we need to get Amir locked up before we start committing to salaries. We need to keep him around and we can’t have some team coming in and taking him away from us. That’d be baddddddddddddddd.
Since Darko is done in Orlando…. bring him back! Haha.
And in other news…. Sideshow Bob may be signed by the Grizzlies. Oh that would be great. Get him the hell away from the Pistons, I hate that bastard.
You realize that as much as ya’ll are joking, I’d consider Darko an immediate upgrade of Nazr…. my head hurts
(Not that I’d recomend signing him, supposedly he’s worth like 8 Million a season and umm… no, but seriously he’s probably better than Mohammed… owch)
Let’s just hope Boney is right about the hometown discount on Mo Pete!
I doubt Darko would come back, but I’d take him over Nazr and/or Dale Davis at this point.
ahh, who am I kidding? I’d take him over CWebb too
