After getting his music video start by doing Christmas carols with his teammates, it seems Amir Johnson has gone solo (though he’s not above making an occasional cameo). I knew we’d be seeing a lot more of him this year, I just figured it would be on the basketball court. All credit for finding this goes to DBB reader Mike Payne, who sent in the tip after some intrepid MySpace sleuthing.
Update: Nothing stays private on MySpace for long. Out of context, some of those pics might look bad, but in reality it’s just a guy goofing off with his friends.

Just made my day, did he take this on his webcam? This is a Classic, Pistons or otherwise.
what a great laugh! Amir should try out for American Idol.
Anyone else see the ESPN magazine piece on Amir? He got some glowing praise from some NBA scouts who compared him to Ben and KG.
is that his real Myspace?
Yes, Diablo- that’s really him. I found him after an interview when he was playing for the Sky Force, talking about how bored he was between games. He’d mostly just talk to his teammates from Detroit on the phone or “play on the internet”. I went straight to Myspace to look him up (man, I’m a stalker), and sure enough he was there.
How do I know its really him? From his friends page, where there are a bunch of candids of he and Amir out and about, including that Youtube video. His friend’s page is private, but I sent a friend request last week, then saw the video and sent to Matt
Dude, and I thought it was creepy that I frequently email Chad Ford….
*shuffles feet, whistles, embarrassed* “hey, look over there, Stephen Jackson just mugged somebody…”
Jeff,
I read that article after you pointed it out. Very complimentary. I, of course, agree with the article, but I did note that it was written by Granderson… a native Detroiter. So, I don’t know if his view is skewed or not.
Of course his quotes from scouts and what not were pretty impressive statements. 12 teams contacted the Pistons about trading for Amir? I don’t get why they just didn’t throw a MLE at him. That would have been tough for Detroit to step up to.
Anyways, thanks for the tip. It was a good read.
btw, for anyone interested, its in the latest ESPN the magazine… probably still on store shelves.
Man, if I was a pseudo-celebrity athlete I’d totally make goofy stuff like this and post it on the internet all the time. Instead, I’m just a wedding photographer. *sigh*
Amir: Hello?
Joe Dumars: Amir, it’s Joe.
Amir: Hey Joe, I’m just lip synching to some songs for my friends.
Joe Dumars: I know, I’m watching it in realtime on YouTube. Give me a call tomorrow. Let’s talk media sensitivity training…

The pictures show a lack of discretion from Amir. Those are not the photos you want posted on the net, particularly the drinking one with the “Stop Snitching” T-Shirt.
Anyone got a link to this article everyone is talking aobut?
And by the way, I’ve never been so excited to spend $159 on NBA League Pass as I have been in this off-season. To get a chance to see Amir, Maxiell, Afflalo, and Stuckey grow from nobodies into budding all-stars will be better than any of the most compelling TV shows by far.
The fact that I still have to wait as long as I do to see this team in action is just plain depressing.
I’ll most likely be heading to both the Sonics game and the Trailblazers game when they come out to play on the West Coast on their first trip West of the season.
CAN’T WAIT!
If Amir’s defense, that video and those pictures were never meant for public consumption, and he’s not the one who posted them online. I did worse things when I was 20. Hell, I did worse things last weekend.
microwave,
I think that’s ridiculous… he’s a basketball player, not a monk. Amir is more responsible at 20 than half the league. ESPN ranked the free agents this summer and had Amir ranked right behind Andray Blatche, who is 21. Andray and a friend got caught by an undercover cop trying to pay for sex after they were out clubbing, just days before he was supposed to sign the offer that was on the table from the Wiz. Relative to other players Amir is a choir boy.
Amir added me as a friend on myspace! haha

If you have Insider you can see the article here (it’s on page 176 I think):

I can’t find a link to a free version of the article. I’d recommend stopping by a newsstand and flipping through the magazine (it’s the one with Tomlinson on the cover). It’s a short piece so you could read it without even having to buy it if you want.
Boney, you may get a kick out of my comment to Amir on July 9th ( Jul 9 2007 1:11P), second to last comment on his page right now…
Amir’s singing is prettier than this:

Garrett: I actually linked that up yesterday in the Alley-Oops (on the right sidebar from the front page. I’ve always wondered if people miss those …
Oops. Guess I’m one of those… sorry!
Hey Matt, it looks like Amir will be playing in Nash and Yao’s charity game with ‘Melo and a few other guys. It’s pretty elite company. Here’s the link: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/articles/0906sunschina-ON.html
Boney “Amir added me as a friend on myspace! haha”
HAHA ME TOO! LOL
This shit is so funny. I mean I knew that Amir could ball… but i didn’t know he could sing so good. After his basketball career he should for sure go into singing. I mean look at shaq, he’s made a couple of songs. Keep on doing you think Amir.
