It’s unclear what his sources are, but Sean Deveney of Sporting News thinks Chris Webber might be headed to Phoenix.

Well I guess that would slow down a fast Phoenix team. If c-webb was that excited to come to Detorit to play last season. I dont understand why he wouldnt re-sign with us. PistonsGirl whats your take on this?
Webber would be a good fit in Orlando. C-Webb can pass and shoot enough for 1 1/2 players but no legs. Dwight Howard has legs enough for the both of them. I think they would play well off of one another on the court but I doubt Orlando would do the move. Webber in Phoenix seems like a bad fit. I wouldn’t be suprised if Webber’s agent is floating the idea to stir up some interest in Webber from ANY team.
Good point, the agent is always behind something. I hope he does come back to Detroit with a little less minutes and play Mohammed a little more. Off the subject, I was talking to Ryan Fields from FSN a week ago at the MSU game and we were talking about Sheed and he thinks also that he will be gone mid-season since J-Maxx, Amir and McDyess can all fill that position. Its gonna suck if we do get rid of him, I would like if he could retire here. Oh well, gotta let the kids play and step up this year.
Ronnie, I’m basically with joeCubed on this one. The fact is Phoenix doesn’t look better with Webber at 5 or 4 and Marion and Amare moving. He also has ZERO chance of replacing Thomas in the “shut down Tim Duncan and otherwise stay out of the way for 90+ games” role. As we all saw in Cleveland, he isn’t actually strong enough to handle a determined inisde attack from a superstar. The fact that his defence has slipped noticably was obvious to us, therefore I can only assume it’d be obvious to Kerr (Suns GM).
As for Webber and the Pistons, right or wrong it looks like Dumars ultimately decided to pass. I was still willing to hold out hope until they signed Hayes because Meija’s contract wasn’t guarenteed and we could afford to outright buy out Dupree, Hunter or Murray to get another contract. Signing Hayes, even as cheap as we did made it clear that extra roster spot probably wasn’t available in the first place, even if Meija doesn’t make it it’ll probably be in favor of Hayes, not an as of yet unsigned FA. I still think that if A) Nazr sucks or gets hurt and B) Amir can’t play 5 (nobody seems to know if this is true or not) we’re going to STRONGLY regret not spending the 5 Mil on Webber. Dyees isn’t a 5, even if he will play there at times and tries like hell on defensive rebounds. He will get destroyed by bigger inside presences (see Garnett, Shaq and most of the bigs in the West of note). Maxy, long arms or not, is 6′7″…. you can’t win with a 6′7″ center in college ball, why would it work in the NBA? Sheed is Sheed and won’t play even half the game at 5 without asploding on Flip. This is a recipe for disaster imho but thats where things stand.
As for Dallas, it makes sense. Word is Webber still sees himself as a starter, something we know just isn’t an option in Detroit or Phoenix (if this story has any legs, which imho it doesn’t). Webber + Dirk in some combination is a better front court than Dampier + Dirk. Plus Dallas has already shown a proclivity to rotate so-so 5’s so they could REALISTICALLY offer Webber the “starting” job without having to play him 35 a night, exposing that he’s fat, out of shape and has no legs left.
If I had to bet money I’d either take “Webber sits until someone gets hurt” or “Webber signs with Dallas for as little money as possible” as the most likely outcome here. His agent is probably just trying to get Dallas back to the table fwiw.
If Webber will take $800,000, Phoenix will grab him. Sarver, the owner, doesn’t care if he can play, it is only how cheap can we get him. Next year, he will sell the lottery pick from Atlanta and Shawn Marion. Remember, you heard it here first.
