Weekend open thread

Hi, mom!

Amir Johnson (far right) is clearly having too much fun in China (Far East). For more on what it was like to travel halfway across the globe for a charity game, here’s an account from someone who was there (HT: TH). There’s more candid shots here, courtesy of Bethlehem Shoals.

As for me, I’m out. (Three posts in one day, can you believe it? I’m back in regular season form!) Consider this an open thread for the weekend, whether you’re talking Wolverine football, Shock basketball or anything else you can possibly think of.

Here’s a shot of Amir in the game:

I really want to dance around the room yelling 38-0… that was NASTY… otoh the fact that we’re now 1-2 and ND would lose to a Pop Warner team right now isn’t lost on me…

Something is incredibly wrong with college football when we can beat ND 38-0 and I really can’t find the gumption to taunt a random Catholic about it….

    *Sighs*

Despite my best efforts otherwise (and I assure you there were Herculean) it doesn’t appear as if I’m going to get off work before 7PM tonight. Someone called in sick and a great number of incredibly important things that were supposed to be done already haven’t been finished. This means I’m doing my job and two other people’s jobs today. Unfortunately Game 5 of the WNBA finals starts at 4:30PM and will likely be concluded before I get off work. I have a friend taping the game for me but it will likely be well after 11 PM before I’ve actually seen it. I know I promised to write a game 5 recap (not being egotistical, a couple people did ask) however it seems to me that said recap would be late and rather boring to read so far after the fact…

Throw in that I’m rapidly becoming sick of arguing with people every time I post and it just seems like a really poor idea.

I know I promised but honestly I just can’t see a) the article being relevant 8 hours after the fact, b) anyone really caring beyond “Shock won or lost” or c) me finding the time to respond to every whacko who disagrees with everything I say. I just wouldn’t be able to do it justice….

Sorry guys (all four or so of you who cared, everyone else can feel free to say “good riddance, she doesn’t know basketball anyways”).

PG4L - sorry to hear that. Yeah, I’ve noticed that people seem to love to pile on to you. Don’t be discouraged - you’ve done good work, and I think that it wouldn’t be a waste for you to do a blog, especially given that this is the last game of the season for the Shock. Maybe you could even explain their lethargy right now…

But I think I can predict the headline: Shock Shocked.

I predicted that the Shock would win by 10 points. Who knew the Shock would loses more than 10 points. The team that shall not be named lives and dies by the three points line. I guess this day they lived.

Also Taurassi is a cheap shot player. First she elbowed Kattie Smith in the eye and now Pierson. I hope Piersons feels alright. I hope the league look at Taurassi playing. She could be the femaile version of Robert Horry.

Aw shucks PG4L, I kind of got all teary-eyed reading your post! Who cares what folks say (unless it’s me) — post away! If people don’t like it, they don’t have to read it. I don’t watch Shock games, so it’s nice to read from someone who is passionate about them and understands the game.

Didn’t get to see the Lions game but it looks like Kitna showed some guts in coming back and leading them to victory. Looks like Calvin Johnson had some key catches too.

Aw guys, that’s not what I meant at all. I don’t mind taking the heat, it’s just HIGHLY unlikely I would be able to find the time to keep responding to it that’s all. Work went crazy and they’re shooting the Hulk 2 outside my house so basically my schedule is completely screwed up.

That having been said I wrote something anyways and sent it to Matt so if he feels it’s worth of his blog he’ll post it. I just probably won’t have much time to explain why I said what I said to every person who runs my post through Babblefish and starts spouting off, that’s all.

As alwayws it’s great to be here, DBB is the only blog I post to regularly because the people here are (for the most part) so well informed. I learn something new about basketball and the Piston’s in specific every time I read this site.

Oh wow. I’d been too busy to check ESPN until now. Has anyone else seen this?

“I’ve never felt anything like that, and for it to clear up and go right back to as normal as I can be, is nothing short of a miracle,” Kitna said. “I just definitely feel the hand of God. That’s all it was. You can’t explain it.”

I mean I love the guy and all I really do but if by week 4 Kitna is telling us “Jesus told me Roy was open deep on the backside by whispering in my ear” I’m demanding we get him a doctor.

(Not that I’m saying a man can’t believe in God, but I think its just a little bit insulting to people who have REAL problems to imply God himself gave a crap about Lions vs Vikings and who was at QB. Jusayin.)

Kitna’s a football player, and man are they sometimes nut jobs. In the face of all the growing suspicion that concussions can or tend to lead to mental problems later in life, here’s Jon Kitna returning in the second half from a concussion sustained in the first. I’ve been a big fan of Kitna for quite some time now, but I’ve got to agree with PG4L that the guy didn’t just manage to prove his mettle (which I’ve always loved about him), he proved his foolishness. It may have been a strange, uber-speedy recovery, but it was no work of God.

And furthermore, you have to wonder even though Kitna says he all of a sudden no longer felt any effects that are the result of a concussion does that mean there weren’t/aren’t effects that still remain that he may not have been aware of or that may return this week and were only exacerbated by him returning to the field on Sunday? You gotta admire the heart of people like this wanting so badly to go out there, but they seem to me to be a bit too caught up in the moment at the risk of suffering an awful lot down the road, because from the way the information continues to be gathering about the effects of concussions, doesn’t sound like God is watching out for these players as they get older.
