Pacers host Pistons

The Pistons and Pacers are about to tip — here’s to hoping this one plays out exactly the same as last night. As usual, your thoughts –> comments, etc etc.

Jarvis is looking good early.. Good to see Stuckey come in, in the 2nd Qtr..

  2. 2 James

Jarvis is looking good atm.. Hopefully he can get a bit more consistent.. Good to see Stuckey in early in the 2nd..

  3. 3 joejoejoe

It’s got to suck to be the Pacers. Indiana is shooting 52% from the field, getting to the line and shooting 90%+, outrebounding the Pistons, and it’s just about even.

  4. 4 Quick Darshan

Once Stuckey gets his sea legs, the already efficient Piston offense is going to get even better. The likelihood of a scoring drought is so much smaller with five starters that can score and Maxiell, Hayes and Stuckey coming off the bench.

  5. 5 PistonsGirl4Life

Well that was way way way less good than last night. I mean it’s awesome to get the W, so no REAL complaints but man….. you can’t let Mike “I make the scared little girl face on national tv while playing defence” Dunleavy Jr hang 18 on you and still be a tough defensive squad. I hope Flip adds extra laps for lack of focus. j/k….sorta, I mean jeeeze, 18? MDJR? :(

  6. 6 kevin s.

Is scoring 18 points really “hanging” anything on you? He scored his season average. The Pistons have looked the best they have looked in a long time. Over this 17 game span, they have a positive 14.1 margin, and have outplayed the Celtics.

And it’s starting to look like Stuckey is going to live up to his promise. How many rookies come in and nail their first nine free throws?

  7. 7 Mr Monday

it was a win. it was a snorefest. but it was a win.

  8. 8 Rob G

I guess it’s going to take a loss to generate a bunch of entertaining comments out of us. Ho hum.

  9. 9 Rob G

Now that I look around the sports world, I realize why folks aren’t tuning in to a boring Pistons/Pacers game - the Pats just made sports history.

  10. 10 kevin s.

And Brady and Moss both set their respective touchdown records on a 65 yard pass. That was sick.

Also sick, the Lions are set to fire Mike Martz. I wonder if Matt Millen and Isiah Thomas give each other a sly wink whenever they make eye contact at sports-management functions.

  11. 11 Fel

Wink? I have to imagine they would high five and chest bump.

  12. 12 PistonsGirl4Life

“Is scoring 18 points really “hanging” anything on you?”

When it’s a trick beyotch like Mike Dunleavy Jr? HELLS YES. I can’t believe you even need to ask.

  13. 13 PistonsGirl4Life

RE: Stuckey. It was nice to see him contribute points while the game was still very much in doubt. It’s obvious he’s an athleate (in the Dick Vitale/draft night sense of the word) but racking up layups vs a demoralized 2nd string defence is EASY when you’re the better athleate. That 3 was clutch and if he can make even one play per game like that, one that really counts, he’ll be a 100% improvement over what this team is used to calling a backup guard.

Still not sold, but day-um if I’m not starting to feel ‘really positive’ about the whole thing.

  14. 14 jandrayer

Pacers had more points in the paint…Pistons need to see these numbers rise come Playoff time. One positive note is that we are seeing less and less stagnant offensive production.

  15. 15 Kyl

kevin s., remember that pg4l takes a lot of stock in how a player looks as opposed to how they play. Kobe wears “girly f’n” tights so he’s not a good basketball player. Dunleavy is a dorky looking white guy, so of course it’s embarrassing that he scored his average on us. I wish Lebron would start wearing something silly, then we wouldn’t have to worry about him.

  16. 16 Kyl

although, in all honesty she’s right.

    he looks really, really dorky.

  17. 17 Juggernaut

    Flip on Stuckey:

“He did some good things,” Saunders said, “and he made some mistakes. But that’s how you learn.”

Guess that doesn’t apply to Amir.

  18. 18 steve

    ^ Zing!

  19. 19 Rob G

I thought that was word for word what he said about Amir: “Even when he makes a mistake he makes a play.” That’s a coach being hard on a rookie. We have to face the fact: Amir is buried this year behind Sheed, Dice, Max… whereas Stuckey is only behind Billups. Unless y’all think we need to cut back on Max’s minutes, Amir’s not going to get the playing time that Stuckey will.

  20. 20 PistonsGirl4Life

    A) He’s from Duke
    B) He’s a grown man who willingly went by Jr. until he was like 25
    C) He’s a 6′9″, 230 LB man who think’s he’s a sometimes “guard”.
    D) He’s a 6′9″, 230 LB forward with ZERO inside presence who specializes in 3 balls.
    E) His facial expressions while trying to play defence usually involve a slackening of the jaw and a severe widening of his ALREADY globular child-like blue eyes. In other words, he makes the SAME face while trying to guard NBA players one on one as your 12 year old sister makes while trying to guard you in the driveway.
    F) If you walked into a gym to play pickup and Mike Dunleavy Jr was on the other team you call “I got Great White Hope” and honestly think “easy guard” despite his size… JUST from looking at him.

Seriously, don’t ANY of you play pickup ball? Andrei Krilenko is a dorky looking white guy who OBVIOUSLY has game, I wouldn’t say ANY of these things about him……

  21. 21 Toledo Joe

I still think they have some decisions to make about the guard rotation. How much will Afflalo play? Lindsey? And will Flip M. really be permanently glued to the bench? They can’t give more than four guards meaningful minutes on even a semi-regular basis. Who will be the two left out?

  22. 22 IsraeliPiston

the guards to be left out - lindsey most of the time and if not afflalo and hopefully murray all of the time - selfish - me first player
    does not have Piston DNA

  23. 23 Keegan

    A) Yeah, they never turn out solid players, except for Battier, Brand, Boozer, Deng, Maggette, Hill (providing he isn’t injured within the next five minutes). The Abdelnaby/Hurley/Williams days are over. Except for the occasional spare like McRoberts.
    B) Irrelevant, grenade-lobbed-over-a-fence comment.
    C) He doesn’t fill out the roster sheet.
    D) And yet, he’s currently leading his team in most offensive categories (points, FG %, FT%, 3-point %.
    E) See B.
    F) See B. Also, I know that when I play pick-up, I instantly choose to guard 6′9″, 230 pounders. *biggest eye-roll in the history of the universe*
The Pacers aren’t all that good, but Dunleavy is large part of why they’re even competitive at all. When Troy Murphy, Jeff Foster, and O’Neal’s worn-out knees are your “inside presence,” well…I guess I’ll say a little prayer for them.
And that’s why they’re becoming the run and gun, three-point shooting team that they are. It’s currently they’re only hope of winning.
Also, I can’t believe Jamaal Tinsley is still on their roster.

He might sometimes be a triple-double threat, and Andrei Kirilenko OBVIOUSLY has game, but I’d call him an injury-prone, whiny moper that Paul Millsap may eventually replace.

  24. 24 Garrett

OT: LeBron turned 23 today, which is weird because when I look at him I think he’s, like, 32 years old. Although I’ve thought that since he was 15.

  25. 25 V

Barring unforeseen circumstances, I don’t think you’ll see Lindsey in a uni again until at least March. If you see Flip in a uni again this year, chances are it won’t be a red white and blue one.

  26. 26 PistonsGirl4Life

Come now Kevin, as if you DIDN’T just watch him flame out in Golden State? Please… we’re talking about Mike Dunleavy Jr here guy. I’m willing to tolerate your arrogance to a point but DEFINATELY not on a 3rd overall complete bust who managed to flunk out of an offence pratically tailor made for him.

    Come again…

  27. 27 PistonsGirl4Life

Also re: your list of duke players:

    Brand, Battier, Boozer = fine
Deng? Hahaha I guess you aren’t watching this season huh?
Magette? Wouldn’t that be the same guy who the clips keep trying to dump because A) he’s a headcase and B) he can’t be featured in an offence? Please… talk about guys who are OVER-RATED….
Hill? Hahaha I can’t believe you even bothered. Read your own if.

Seriously Kevin, to quote someone else talking to me on here… I like you, your a smart cookie, but sometimes you run your fingers before your brain engages.

  28. 28 PistonsGirl4Life

On a subject slightly more important than Mike Dunleavy’s manhood (well at least to me):

I really hope those of you saying Lindsey Hunter is done for the forseable future are wrong. I wasn’t the biggest fan of him coming back for this farewell tour either…. and I REALLY am still very afraid that Flip’s panic button still equals putting Lindsey in at the worst possible time…….but…

That Boston game was freaking incredible. Lindsey definately proved that when you positively absolutely MUST have a turnover… he’s the guy you want playing on the ball. I know he’s never going to give us 20 mins in a single game again… but man, I can think of a WHOLE bunch of times the last 3 years I’ve said “we just need a turnover or two” and we didn’t get them.

Maybe I’m being sentimental, but I don’t honestly think so… that game in Boston was enough to change my mind all by itself.

  29. 29 Other Matt

Hey! I agree with PG4L! I swear that Lindsey appears hooked up to the juvenation machine, and Afflalo looks promising. Those 2 coming in with Max is eerily remeniscent of the Hunter-James-Corliss combo, except, you know way more athletic and scary. Max is slowly turning into a matchup nightmare.

The nice thing about Stuckey (and I’m going by everybody else’s comments, I’ve been traveling without access to my league pass) is that he provides an entirely different look. We could go with Hunter-Afflalo to amp up the D. Or we could bring in Stuckey for more of a change of pace slasher type off of Billups’ game. I like our bench very very much.

  30. 30 PistonsGirl4Life

“Hey! I agree with PG4L!” - Broken clock, right twice a day, yada yada

    :)

  31. 31 Mike Payne

“I’m willing to tolerate your arrogance to a point” man, look in the mirror!

I agree with Keegan. I enjoy your comments most of the time PG4L, but how can you argue that Keegan (yes, it was Keegan, not Kevin) was being arrogant when you write something like this:
    http://www.detroitbadboys.com/archives/2007-12-29/pacers-host-pistons/#comment-112097

Dunleavy is having a career best year– in less minutes that he played last year. As Keegan mentioned, he’s the greatest reason why Indiana is second in our division right now, and was above .500 before meeting the Pistons.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3601/career;_ylt=ArVvAqOgLA.VOAasLHf0H3akvLYF

V, I agree re: Murray. I’d be interested to see what we can get for Murray, at least in picks.

As for Hunter, this is where I totally agree with you PG4L. Let’s get one more ring with him this season then get him on our staff.

  32. 32 joejoejoe

I was against bringing Lindsey Hunter back but I was wrong. He has a defined role (lockdown D at PG when you need it) and he’s a leader in the lockerroom. He’s a perfect fit for an end of the bench guy. It’s far, far better for Hunter to be at the end of the bench sitting next to Afflalo or Stuckey when they commit a rookie mistake and get yanked than just about any other guard in the league.

Joe Dumars really knows what he is doing and I’m a hack blog commentator.

  33. 33 Rocky Cliffs

*gets punched in the face by Keegan’s biggest eye-roll in the history of the universe and falls over*

  34. 34 LawyerBoy

I echo PG4L, joejoejoe and other Matt on the Lindsey front. He’s not the same Lindsey Hunter we’d seen in years past. That guy was called on to do more and kinda folded under the overexposure. He averaged 14:18 while appearing in 52 of the 82 regular season games, not to mention 10:18 in 13 of 16 playoff games (Maxiell averaged 10:30 in 14 playoff appearances for context). This year Lindsey’s been averaging 8:24 of burn in 16 of 30 games. He’s on pace to play in 44 games with much fewer minutes and he needs it and it seems to be working. He’s a fantastic end of the bench option

PG4L, going after Hill is ridiculous. I don’t like to flat-out deny someone’s claim on this place, I prefer to present my alternate viewpoint and let the community weigh in, but I just won’t accept that knock on Hill, especially from a Pistons fan. The only thing is he’s never gotten out of the first round, but neither has McGrady and he’s a good player. Hill’s career averages are: 19.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg, and 5.2 apg. He’s a career 48.3% shooter as a 6′8″ (guard-)forward. Are you kidding me? That is a GREAT NBA player. The guy has played in at least 65 games in 7 seasons (hopefully 8 after this year). He got the Jarvis Hayes-Antonio McDyess bad rehab program shaft-o-matic. I know we can all be a little adversarial at times, but this is just not fair to diss Hill for his injury troubles. I’m happy to stay completely out of the Dunleavy Jr. debate, but a Grant Hill mea culpa is in order.

  35. 35 Fel

Holy crap, anyone else seeing Lakers vs Boston with Lakers wearing short shorts?? Its pretty hilarious…now if only I could understand mandarin.

  36. 36 Quick Darshan

So much for the Celtics struggling on their West Coast swing.

The 2nd seed might be the best place for the Pistons though. I expect the Cavs to right the ship and make it to either the 4th or 5th seed. Let them and Boston fight it out in the Second Round.

  37. 37 Garrett

Grant Hill is having a great year so far. I was hoping he was going to sign with Detroit over the summer and would have welcomed him back with open arms (although there were plenty who wouldn’t). I still have my Grant Hill: NBA Sensation VHS tape in my basement!

    http://www.amazon.ca/Grant-Hill-NBA-Sensation/dp/630405307X

“You’re my role model, Grant Hill!”

  38. 38 Boney

Mike Dunleavy is a good 2nd or 3rd option on offense. He can’t carry a team, but he didn’t carry the team at Duke when he was there.

PG4L? Luol Deng is having an off year for a team that just fired their coach who didn’t have any imagination on offense.

Most Duke guys do their jobs, they are solid in what they do. Corey Maggette is a great athlete and any team would want him on their team if he didn’t have such a bad contract. I’d take Maggette over any of the bench swingmen that the Pistons have had the last, oh I dunno, 10 years?

Just don’t ask them to make good personnel decisions (Danny Ferry).

  39. 39 kevin s.

“Seriously Kevin, to quote someone else talking to me on here… I like you, your a smart cookie, but sometimes you run your fingers before your brain engages.”

All I did was question whether someone can “hang” 18 points on a team. You’ll never hear anyone say “wow, how did Detroit let Keith Bogans hang 14 on them last night?” For all Dunleavy’s faults, he is clearly able to score 18 points on a give night. If he drops 30, call it out.

Somebody has to score for a .500 team. We weren’t going to beat them 108-46. Their the Pacers not the… Well, I interrupt this programming to note that I Googled Maryland-Eastern Shore to find out who their mascot was…

The Hawks, it turns out. You cannot make that stuff up.

So I went to a backup, Northern Florida. Their mascot is the Osprey. What the hell?

And did you know that the logo for Stetson’s team is just the Spartan logo with a cowboy hat on it? Taking a page out of Georgia’s playbook, I suppose.

  40. 40 joejoejoe

PG4L is just mad because the 76ers preferred Shav Randolph to Chris Webber ;)

  41. 41 PistonsGirl4Life

Hahahah, I swear I thought it was Kevin….

    I really did.

  42. 42 PistonsGirl4Life

Regarding Hill, I can’t believe just because your team drafted him you’re willing to ignore his complete inability to live up to expectations…. the fact is Grant Hill wasn’t as advertised… just like the VAST majority of Duke stars aren’t as advertised… I mostly just thought it was funny as hell that someone was quoting me Grant Hill as an example of someone who “succeeded” from Duke… go all homer if you want but the truth is the guy’s career has been a big disapointment…

  43. 43 PistonsGirl4Life

Sorry for the triple post but mortal embarassment will do that for you…

I managed to catch most of the Lakers/Celtics game tonight and umm… now I’m starting to actually worry about Boston a little bit. I mean LA was definately surging, and on paper should have given the Celts the same kind of test they faced vs us… but watching the game, it just wasn’t all that close. Boston pretty much handled L.A in every facet of the game, and they looked like they had an arm basically EVERYWHERE whenever Kobe had the ball. It wasn’t just that he couldn’t shoot, PASSING was tricky.

I keep waiting for the wheels to fall off at some point, I mean everything the last 10 years of watching GMs build basketball teams in the NBA has taught us that this should NOT actually work. It might work for a while, but eventually one offseason and a tonne of cash DOESN’T usually seal the deal…

Yet Boston keeps winning. I know it doesn’t mean anything come playoff time (see us 2 years ago, Dallas last year, etc) but really are these guys gonna win 65 games? I mean, wow.

  44. 44 Rob G

The guys down at perkisabeast.com seem to think so…

  45. 45 IsraeliPiston

A little while ago someone with a short handle posted a site where you can watch games in real time with no downloads etc

Could someone please provide me with the link

I searched the archives to no avail

    thanks

reminding everyone of 3:30 pm game time today

  46. 46 Matt C.

There’s this one http://forum.myp2p.eu/viewtopic.php?id=24311 , but links only work for a short while after they are posted. I never used the site since I’m local, but I read something about needing Windows Media Player 10 and not WMP 11.

  47. 47 IsraeliPiston

    thanks, Hopefully it will work

    Happy New Year

  48. 48 LawyerBoy

PG4L: You’re nuts on this one. The ONLY thing he didn’t do as a Piston to annoint him savior of this squad was get us out of the first round (again, something McGrady has struggled with but doesn’t make him a bad player). That’s also the only thing he did in terms of failing to meet expectations. Hill had one big mistake in rushing back from an injury which cost him the better part of 3 seasons and unlikely nagging troubles in ‘05-’06. The lower limb issues thus far have felled a major part of two Pistons’ (Hayes and McDyess) careers and for a time, ruined their playing reputation. I could be exaggerating the exclusivity of this, but I’m pretty sure The Pistons were the only team in the NBA in the summer of ‘04 willing to throw 4 years and $22.5 million at McDyess. I think in hindsight, any NBA team would jump at that. You’re treating Hill like he’s still toxic due to injury and that’s just ridiculous.

There’s no case of homerism here, I assure you. I was furious at Hill when he left and it took me quite a while to get over it. Now I’m apathetic, as it’s not like he was clamoring for a return to the D (boo), but he’s still so damn good on an NBA court even with adapting to their tempo that suits him as well as it would Webber and I respect it. Lay off him PG4L :)
