At some point in time in the very near future, Detroit Bad Boys will once again be something more than just a series of game threads. Unfortunately, that point is not today. But here’s a nice, fresh comment section for you to enlighten with your thoughts about today’s tilt with the Bucks (3:30pm, FSN) as the Pistons go for their ninth straight win. I’ll be at the game for HOOPSWORLD, and then after that it’s off to celebrate New Year’s — have a safe and happy holiday, people!

Five playoff teams in a row to start the New Year for the Pistons.
Yeesh, Rip and Jarvis are hot right now.
Apparently the classes at Eastern Washington are unlike anything else. It seems to me that they’ve taught Rodney Stuckey how to fly in his time there. Bogut never had a chance defending that layup.
This one is over. Bring back the rooks.
I have never seen Chauncey dunk during a game ever. Kelser and Blaha’s commentary makes me feel like I don’t watch enough games though.
86-57 lead at the end of 3rd quarter, I love these kind of games. Just killing them at the end of the 3rd. There’s no way they can dig themselves out of this hole with 1 quarter left. Hopefully give Amir, Brezec, and Hermann some decent playing time in the 4th, may as well give Stuckey and Afflalo some more minutes too.
I’ve only seen 1 or 2 other Chauncey dunks in the last few years.
35 point lead, this is just sick.
billips recently joked that he is too old to dunk — guess not
Put Amir in there already…please?
amir is in
2 points for amir
And take out Hayes for Hermann.
heRRmaNN is in
Man, as soon as I say put Amir in he goes in and now Herrmann is in.
Now who has the deepest team in the NBA?
Matt, please ask for Samb
Almost a 40 point lead, this is ridiculous.
Hehe, if he was dressed to play I would.
Stuckey sure isn’t afraid of contact after getting his hand broke.
would have liked Yi
correction, would have liked to see Samb against Yi
And since the Bucks have Yi there’s millions of people in China watching the Bucks getting blown out 40 plus points.
season high assists for Detroit
I think Hermann is a keeper.
45 point blowout, that is just insane. I couldn’t have even hoped for that big of a lead.
Bobcat fans were really sad to see herrmann go. They guy has some physical ability for sure.
I was watching the game with Chinese anouncers on SopCast… Couldn’t tell what they were saying but it was funny to hear pistons players names pop out of their mouths once in awhile.
They got very excited any time Yi touched the ball.
It looked like they were picking up the FSN-Detroit feed and commenting over it. They didn’t show a single U.S. commercial though. During breaks they just showed the same NBA “Where amazing happens” commercials over and over.
Great great game. It was my 7 year old nephews first time ever going to a Piston game. 45 point blow out and he got to see every guy on the team play (almost). Happy New Year!
I think PG4L will deem this performance “day-um” worthy.
hell yes hell yes hell yes hell yes hell yes hell yes hell yes hell yes hell yes hell yes hell yes hell yes this is the best New Year’s Eve ever. Oh, god, yes…
BRING ON THE GODDAMN CELTICS! BRING ‘EM ON! THEY’RE NOTHING!
Deep-troit!
I was at work, and didn’t follow the game. I just read the worldwide leader’s recap and this Chauncey quote (on the dunk) was included, “I had to do that, because a lot of the rookies probably didn’t have TVs yet the last time I dunked,” he said after the game. “We still have no evidence that Afflalo can even do it.”
Y’all be safe out there tonight and have fun!!
Q Dog
Couldn’t have asked for a better win on New Year’s Eve. This bench seems limitless at the moment, a great sign considering the starters will need rest to stay fresh for the road trip they’re about to take. Not to mention the back-to-backs we’ve got coming up. Kind of sucks to have to play Boston and San Antonio on the end of a back-to-back, but with depth like this, the load becomes easier to carry. Speaking of back-to-backs, I was just looking over Boston’s schedule, and is it just me, or does it seem like Boston has one of the easiest schedules out there? I’m not trying to call foul on the league or anything, but scheduling can affect even the best teams (yes, the Pistons are the best TEAM). To me, Detroit’s 24-7 record is more impressive than Boston’s 26-3 right now when 10 of the first 12 were played on the road with injuries affecting 3 starters (Wallace, McDyess, Billups) and Hamilton sitting out the first two (or was it just Orlando?). Honestly, I know the next two games against Boston will probably end up being the games general fans will use to analyze the Pistons, but for me, any game against San Antonio is where I’ll look to see if Detroit is really serious about winning another title, or just looking good to let themselves down in the Conference Finals again. Boston should be a quiz whereas San Antonio should be Detroit’s final exam.
I seen Chauncey dunk a couple times during the NBA Finals. He used to dunk frequently back in his college days.
happy new year’s, y’all! thanks to matt for all the hard work!
This is just ridiculous. How in the world do you beat another NBA team by almost 50 pts? I pray we sustain this level of play. Don’t want to peak too soon. The great thing is by the end of the season, we should be even better because our young guns will have more experience & confidence. If Brezec can be a valuable 4th big man and/or Amir starts to show us something, this could get scary. I pray we spank Boston on Saturday to take away the buzz about them. I always look at our games against San Antonio as a true test to where we are as a team. The upcoming stretch of games we truly be a good measure for us. Can’t wait to see Stuckey play (only get ESPN or TNT games here in ATL). Happy New Year all. Lets go PISTONS!!!!

And they lost to the Magic which has no chance against us, and the Cavs who are barely in the playoffs. The media made their trip out west sound like it was supposed to be a test even though it was vs. the Clippers, SuperSonics, Jazz and the Lakers. Thats a test? No San Antonio, Phoenix, or Dallas. Even all through January it is pretty easy for them. They only really start to have competition in February and March, then April is a cakewalk too.
I’m not saying they aren’t good, they are the only team in the east that would give us some serious competition in the playoffs. I just think they got the easiest schedule in the 07-08 season.
Note the Celts are 4-0 on their first Western road trip, with quality Ws over Utah and the Lakers. Everyone knows the schedule has been cake for them, but they’re a useful side, as they say in soccer.
I live in Vegas most of the time (keep a place in LA, too), saw the highlights of today’s game at Red Rock (and stayed for NYE, too). Pretty scary when a guy like Hermann is your 12th guy…when your bench is this deep, it’s a good sign. Dumars learned his lessons well from Trader Jack.
Going back to Chauncey’s dunk, he dunks pretty much once a season. Last year it was in Denver, and Rasheed gave him a hard time about it being a “Greg Oostertag fingertip dunk.” Two years ago he dunked against Miami. I remember laughing about a picture with the caption:
“Ben Wallace watches in surprise as Billups, not known for his dunking, throws one down.”
Every time he’s on a fast break, my sister and I yell ” Chauncey, dunk!” We knew he was going to yesterday, though, you could see the smile on his face as he drove to the basket.
That was such a great game. I feel sorry for people who are not Pistons fans, I really do.
http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/50039/20071231/mejia_named_d_league_performer_of_the_week/
Sammy Mejia of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants was today named D-League.com Performer of the Week for games played during the week of Dec. 24. In three games this week, Mejia averaged 31.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while shooting 32-of-56 (.571) from the field and 28-of-35 (.800) from the free throw line.
wow. I didn’t even know he got into the dleague. I thought he was going overseas since he didn’t make the dleague at the beginning of the season.
I loved the way Sammy played in the Vegas summer league. I watched almost every game that I could, and was more impressed by Mejia than our other drafts at times. He outperformed Afflalo by a slim margin, seemed to be a glass-heavy guard. He rebounded very well, if my memory serves me.
Good find, Matt Gibson. That’s awesome news. I don’t know how the draft contracts work, but I assume we still have rights to him. I don’t see us needing him this season, but he could be a decent addition next season should Hunter move to the front office and Murray be traded for a pick or two. Although knowing Joe, we’ll have better options than Mejia after the post-season, post-championship draft this year.
By “post-championship”, I mean we’re going to win a goddamn championship this year. A motherf$%#king championship, dammit.
Actually Mike Payne we don’t have Sammy. We drafted him but we had to cut him when we signed Jarvis Hayes. So hes a free agent.
Matt C and I are eye to eye on the celts scheduling and mike payne and I are on the same page when it comes to who will be the champs this year. Then again, who here is really going to disagree?
Yeah, we no longer have the rights to Sammy, but still have the rights to Alex Acker. We have five contracts expiring at the end of the season. And we have three draft picks (incuding what will definitely be the first pick in Round Two).
My guess is that Joe will sign someone with the mid-level exemption. Draft three players. And bring in Acker.
Or he’ll split the mid-level and sign two free agents. And draft three.
It’s funny that our starters think an NBA game is 3 quarters long now.
they’ll have cap room to sign a player, then they have the MLE and then the rookie contracts (3) only 1 of which is guaranteed unless they trade into the 1st round (which you know PHX may sell you their Atlanta pick on the cheap).
Hey, did I mention I got NBA Live 08 for Christmas and Webber is still our starting centre? He totally dominates, too! Now I’m fully convinced we need him back. His dunk rating is, like, 83!
note to self: Stick with NBA 2k8
2k8 is sick. Afflalo pretty damn good. Him, rip and sheed helped me win a championship in an online league and $250 bucks.
“I think PG4L will deem this performance “day-um” worthy.” - Oh hells yeah. Did you see Charlie Bell’s face near the end of that game when they did the in tight close up? That man was UTTERLY demoralized. This was nasty.
Would have commented sooner but ya’ll do know I’m a Wolverines girl… the second the game was over I had a house to decorate, baking to do, a party to plan, 9 live baby allegators to slaughter and a Tim Tebow voodoo doll to stick pins in. Busy night/day all and all.
OT but seriously… Dear Lloyd… thanks, that was a nice way to go and I appreciate the win more than I bet you’ll ever believe. Otoh guy you can’t have your best recruiting class go 0 For Ohio State and still be the ball coach here. I’m sure once I forget about how much Tressel owned you I’ll really wish you hadn’t retired… but even today, even after that SHOCKING upset… I’m still not there. Ciao, and don’t even THINK about the AD’s chair.
Darshan,
I don’t think having the contract to acker is worth a lot. that knee injury must have been worse than people thought. he’s putting up average stats at best:
http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?seasoncode=E2007&pcode=LGC
maybe as he gets healthier his numbers will continue to rise…
At about half way into the 4th quarter I said to myself “They could have given all of our starters 0 minutes and still would have won this game” and immediately that I was just being a homer. But after another minute of contemplating I think the ‘Zoo Crew’ would have won by double digits. It just aint fair
That raises an interesting question. What’s more insulting or less sportsmanlike - starting the game with your bench and keeping it competitive or using your starters and blowing the game wide open? It would be great to see our second unit start and play for a full quarter or so, even if they fell behind significantly.
