Fun with Hot Spots

Last month, DBB reader Tim passed along the new link to these NBA Hot Spots, which, as you can see below, breaks down the shooting percentages for each player based on each spot on the floor. (These were introduced last year under the name “NBA Hot Zone,” and I wish they’d just re-direct the old link to the new on — until I got the new link I’d randomly Google “NBA Hot Zone,” find the old page and get mad that it wasn’t showing 2007-08 stats yet. But I digress.)

I figured Jason Maxiell’s .545 shooting percentage was because most of his shots were dunks, but that’s not the case at all:

Yes, 125 of his 222 field goal attempts this year are right under the basket, but still, as you’ll see after the jump, he’s out McDyess-ing McDyess with his midrange jumper

One of Rodney Stuckey’s greatest strengths is getting to the basket … but that doesn’t mean he always finishes:

No complaints about Rip Hamilton, though; the guy is on fire just about anywhere he shoots. And damn, no wonder he likes the corners so much:

“I always say, that’s my real estate in that corner. Like Monopoly, I got four houses and a hotel on there,” said Hamilton. “That’s what I do. They can’t tell me that – you land on my property you got to pay.”

who said weeks ago that maxy was shooting the mid-range jumper and foul line curl almost as well as rip? me baby, me. boosh!

maxy has mad skills. once he gets better at dealing with the double teams he and this team will be… well, even more unstoppable than they already are.

Lol… Maxey is a better shooter around the free throw line when he is being gaurded than he is when shooting free throws. Maybe he should wear a Rip Mask with a hand painted on the face for shooting free throws.

ESPN is reporting AMARE for SHEED. Look it up!!!

lol @ Ben Wallace, he’s ice cold, but we all knew that.

Chris Sheridan’s latest piece on ESPN about the big name players most likely to be traded asked if a Sheed for Amare Stoudemire trade would make since. I’ve thought about it and I’m pretty much conflicted. Amare is young and a stud but could the Pistons win this year without Sheed’s D and leadership?? Sheed’s contract is up after next season so Pheonix would like that but wouldn’t they want more than that? Would they want Amir too?? A future of Amare, Stuckey, Prince, & Afflalo could be awfully bright. I figured it could lead to some interesting debate but in the end I think Amare’s attitude (about the game) is enough alone to make me pass on him.

Thought it was pretty interesting that maxi’s coldest spots on the left wing– thats where he hit that game winner early last year against the sonics, one of my fondest maxi memories so far:

Wow. That application is pretty cool. Maybe Baby Eater should jump from behind the line when he shoots FTs? Are you even allowed to jump as long as you stay behind the line? I remember a player (I think it was Nick Van Exel) used to shoot fairly far behind the line. And if I also remember correctly, former Timberwolves scrub and Indiana Hoosiers ballhog Bracey Wright used to shoot from a few feet behind the line.

Jesse, that’s an intriguing scenario to me. Amare’s contract is only an extra year (player option in that final year 2010) and only an extra $13 million over the 5 year length of it (I don’t know if it’s backloaded or frontloaded). Sheed is 33; Amare is 25.

I think you touched on this as well, but there’s something to be said about the way trading Sheed would disrupt the unbelievable sense of camaraderie and chemistry on the squad and deal a hgue blow to the team’s leadership and possibly its identity. I’m not downright objecting to it yet, I’m reserving judgment at this time in favor of further reflection. In any event, in terms of actual probability of this trade being on the table, I kind of don’t think it has legs. We shall see.

way off topic. but here’s a hypothetical for you all.

how would the pistons bench fare as its own team in the east?
    starter/backup
    PG Stuckey/Hunter
    SG Afflalo/Murray
    SF Hayes/Herrmann
    PF Maxiell/Johnson
    C Brezec/Samb

Obviously, they wouldn’t be good. too young at guard, not enough talent at center. however, i contend they wouldn’t suck. below average, but they’d be able to hang with the bottom 7 of the east and maybe, just maybe, fight for a playoff spot.

    thoughts?

Sheed for Stoudemire? Please, Amare isn’t a Piston and Sheed isn’t a Sun. The last thing the Pistons need right now is one of the SOFTEST big men in the game.

BTW…Brezec needs to go. I don’t care how enthuiastic he is about playing for Detroit, the dude doesn’t bring anything but longterm drawbacks. I’m sorry, but if cheerleading is his strongest asset, there’s no reason to keep this guy around.

WLM1, I disagree completely. He brings size that no one else on the team has. Cheick Samb may be 7′1 but he is not 250 pounds and he’s not going to be on our roster this season. Yes, Shaq (part of the not so mobile big guy crew that Brezec would match up nicely against) isn’t so much of a threat to play us this postseason, but what about Nenad Kristic on the Nets? They’re probably going to make the playoffs, and we may have to play them. While I wouldn’t worry about losing to the Nets, especially on an account of Kristic being the difference, I like having Brezec for that matchup. He’s not a great player, sure, but he certainly deserves to be here in an end-of-the-bench role as a (extremely limited) situational player with great size.

I don’t think the hot spots prove much about JMax. Yeah, the red color fills in the mid-range spots, but look at the numbers - he has only taken a few shots from those spots. Either the numbers are two small to be statistically significant and accurately predict future percentages (unlike Dice’s numbers) or JMax only shoots from outside when he’s WIDE open (and thus much more likely to make it) — or perhaps both are true. In any case, I wouldn’t say JMax is out-diceing Dice.

That said, I think the hot spot utility is pretty cool, and I like the thought behind examining our production with it. It might also be worthwhile to use it to scout other teams.

And remember the Primoz has an expiring contract and most likely will be somewhere (Europe) else next year.

I just read a little NBA.com an i was thinking about one of the posts about underrated players….
Marcus camby had a night of 24 rebounds and 11 blocks. even with a 30% FG% those are great stats and shows a lot of hustle…
Not thati would trade him for sheedjust like i wouldn’t trade him for any of the suns bt still….underrated

  15. 15 Toledo Joe

Stoudemire and Rasheed are both excleent players, but trading them for each other makes both teams worse. The Pistons already have some interior defense problems (especially when ‘Sheed isn’t on the court) and their “bigs” are already relatively small. And Stoudemire isn’t going to get all those fun dunks in Detroit’s offense. Meanwhile, Rasheed would just slow up the Suns offense.

Camby is a beast. I wouldn’t trade ‘Sheed for him, but Marcus is doing the Ben Wallace rebounding/defense type big man better than anyone else this year, including Ben.

Oh, and that is a fun app.

  16. 16 Toledo Joe

    “excellent.” Sheesh, I should proofread.

  17. 17 LawyerBoy

Yeah, it’s a shame that Camby missed a triple double (with blocks!!!) by 2 points. Obscured by that amazing stat line was the fact that Linas Kleiza went off for 41 last night against the Jazz in that game. I’ve been big on Kleiza for a minute and I remember I noted him as an underrated or underappreciated player in a thread on this blog a looooong time ago, but dropping 41? My goodness.

    WLM1,
I’m with LB on this one. A big body that can guard other big bodies is something our bench is currently lacking without Brezec. He seems to understand this limited role and be ok with it, I don’t think Webber would be (or be as good defensively as brezec is).

    LanceBlanks,
if he hasn’t taken enough shots for the odds to be significant then he should be taking more shots. it’s stupid of him to shoot that high a percentage, but sit back and watch tay brick 10 in a row.

it kills me that someone shooting so bad keeps taking so many shots and someone who has been shooting on fire isn’t. either flip or chauncey need to wise up. tay is a great great talent, but if he keeps taking and missing so many shots either Flip or Chauncey need to be slapped in the face.

  19. 19 Quick Darshan

I’ve seen the next Marcus Camby. His name is Cheick Samby.

  20. 20 Mike Payne

I hate Marcus Camby. He’s tearing up my fantasy team right now… and I’m typically the block leader! That bastard…

  21. 21 waltonlikesmen1

Now, Marcus Camby has Piston written all over him. He reminds me of Tay, only he’s inflicted with Satan’s wrath.

Kyle + LB - I respect your opinions on Brezec, but I still don’t see him being a difference maker for us. JesseC made a good point in saying that Brezec’s contract will be up and he’ll probably be gone next year.

From what I’ve seen from Brezec so far this year (I’ll admit, it’s not as much as I’d like), he’s a lot like most big guys on a highschool team: has the size advantage, just doesn’t have the skills to exploit it.
