Wednesday’s Layup Drill

This is what you call filler. Enjoy:

  • Chris McCosky thinks the NBA is going to hell with all of these buyouts. Kelly Dywer thinks McCosky is nuts.
  • Joe Dumars on the season so far: “I feel good about that right now, as far as results, wins and losses. But, I will say this, I am not handing out any A’s. We still have a long way to go.” Krista Jahnke, meanwhile, hands out five A’s.
  • Do you know a little kid that looks like one of the Pistons? Put him to work.
  • Ben Q. Rock of Third Quarter Collapse thinks I was a little harsh making fun of the Magic getting so fired up for the game on Sunday. In hindsight, sour grapes certainly fueled some of that, but most of it is genuine amusement at how many rivalries the Pistons are are allegedly part of. At the moment, Cleveland is still the biggest rival, though Boston is suddenly close behind. Chicago certainly ranks up there, and Miami and Indiana used to, not to mention the Spurs. But the Magic? Not yet.
  • Rasheed Wallace doesn’t want to be an All-Star … but I don’t see any way around it given the shape Shaq is in.
  • From McCosky’s blog: “[Dumars] also told Webber that if he could pull off a trade to clear a spot, he still wouldn’t sign him back until he and Webber could sit down and have a face-to-face meeting. Dumars wants Webber to be completely clear about what his role would be. He would not be starting. He would not take Jason Maxiell’s role in the rotation. He would be, essentially, the fourth big man. He would be Dale Davis. He will play 10 minutes a night, maybe. Some nights, against teams like Phoenix and Golden State, he would probably not play at all. Dumars wants to be sure Webber understands that and would be willing to accept that.”
  • DBB reader V points out Detroit’s dueling columnists! Michael Rosenberg of the Freep: “His return is not impossible, but, if anything, the Pistons are less likely to bring him in now than they were in, say, September.” Rob Parker of the Detroit News: “It appears Chris Webber will be rejoining the Pistons sooner than later. “
  • When former Pistons lose their cool: Memo flips the bird.

Alright, what links did I miss?

I don’t have a kid that looks like Chauncey, but the next time you see that McDonalds commercial with the kid doing the cha-cha and dunking apples I want you to look at the dad and tell me its not Ronald “Flip” Murray. He’s even got the same suit as behind the bench.

I never used the word “rivalry” to describe the Magic/Pistons relationship, because that word implies that there’s a mutual sense of special importance placed on the game by both teams. Clearly, the Pistons don’t think of the Magic as a big deal, and why should they? They have no reason to fear the Magic. They’re responsible for the team’s last two playoff exits, the first of which effectively ended Orlando’s brief period of relevance during the T-Mac era.

the thing we need to get used to, which i’d thought we had gotten used to, is that for everyone else in the east we ARE their big rivalry. We’re the guys they’re sick of getting beat by and watching go on to the ECF’s every year. We’re the game they prepare weeks in advance for. We’ve been the big, bad bullies of the east for years now, while of course the jersey popping and taunting of the celts was low and surprising, i’m not at all surprised by lesser teams playing up the importance of a game against the pistons to get all worked up.

    Well stated Kyle!

You can’t have a rivalry when you don’t hate a team. I hate Miami, Cleveland, Chicago and (now) Boston.

I don’t get the sense that Orlando hates Detroit. Just really wanted to beat them.

I think Kyle is onto something. The road for Eastern teams to get to the finals has gone through the Palace for, what, five years now? Given the relative parity in the East, just about any relevant team has a gripe with Detroit for derailing its championship chances.

Just remembered something, Quick: wasn’t it DBB who had a hard time coming up with any single Magic player to hate? I think whoever made the post (Matt?) came up with Jameer Nelson, but conceded it was kind of a stretch.

and for the record, it’s my birthday today. we better win. i’ll not be happy if we lose our fourth straight on my 27th birthday.

I wonder if Flip Murray, the self-proclaimed “Fourth Quarter Slaughter” reads “Third Quarter Collapse?”

BQR, I can’t think of a Magic player I hate, although there were some Pistons fans that bore a grudge against Grant Hill (and, I guess, Darko).

Just wanted all to know that ESPN’s “Jim Rome is Burning” will have Chauncey on some time this week.

And how can you hate perhaps the greatest shooter in the history of any sport, J.J. Redick? Stroke!

Friday’s game against the Magic has been moved to 7pm (instead of it’s old time, which was 8pm).

    Diablo,
unfortunately what time does that mean the game actually starts? the last time they bumped up a game time it was just for an extra half hour talking heads.

  14. 14 Matt Gibson

Just remember Matt that the game tonight starts at 7. And whats the over-under on Willie Green dropping 20 and 5 dimes tonight?

  15. 15 LawyerBoy

Matt Gibson: Technically you can’t say “what’s the over-under on player x dropping y”. For those of us with a gambling jones, you’d want to say “what do you got/take/have on Willie Green’s over-under tonight of 20 (points) and 5 dimes?” And my answer Matt, is over and under, respectively.

  16. 16 Kyle

poor rodney stuckey, i mean, my god. that poor kid.

  17. 17 Kyle

    AMIR JOHNSON!!! SECOND QUARTER!!!

  18. 18 Kyle

hehe, amir just ate a leftover baby

  19. 19 Kyle

witness this event pistons fans. the run and gun offense we all knew the bench could play is kicking the 76ers butts right now (2nd quarter). Amir is looking sharp on offense and defense, and Afflalo is showing flip that players without great jump shots are still useful. will we ever see it again? i doubt it. *sigh*

“unfortunately what time does that mean the game actually starts? the last time they bumped up a game time it was just for an extra half hour talking heads.”

Well, I heard it was suppose to accommodate ESPN’s scheduling for later games, so I’m guessing the bump-up (or down) to 7pm is a legit tip-off time.

  21. 21 Sauce1977

Rob Parker is a fantastic moron, so I tend to believe the opposite of his assumptions.

  22. 22 Diablo

“Rob Parker is a fantastic moron, so I tend to believe the opposite of his assumptions.”

Rob Parker is a genius…well atleast in Baseball and Football.

  23. 23 Sauce1977

If you saw how many bridges he burned, and the ratio of swing-miss ideas to swing-hit, you’d never use “genius” with Rob Parker.

  24. 24 Matt Gibson

Lawerboy- Ya I realized that after I posted it. I guess thats why I dont gamble.

  25. 25 Diablo

“If you saw how many bridges he burned”

Well, I don’t know him personally, so I don’t know much about what you are referring to, exactly.
