It’s time to respect Rip’s tramp ball

Rip Hamilton wants in on the three-point contest. From the Freep’s Krista Jahnke:

“All that running around, that’s what I do,” said Hamilton, who entered Tuesday sixth in the NBA in three-point shooting. “I run around and shoot.”

Usually, he’s running around to shoot jumpers. But Hamilton led the NBA in three-point shooting two seasons ago and spent part of Tuesday’s pregame proving his sweet spots extend beyond the arc. […]

“I’m campaigning; I’m everything,” said Hamilton, who shot 1-for-2 on three-pointers and scored 15 points in Tuesday night’s 110-104 victory over the Pacers. “The only reason why I’m so interested in it is because everyone underestimates me. Everyone says I can’t shoot threes since the (Larry Brown) era. They still ain’t giving me my respect on my tramp ball.”

I don’t think I’ve heard the phrase “tramp ball” before today, but I see his point: he’s been red-hot all season from the corners and decent from everywhere else. Chauncey Billups isn’t so confident.

“I want him in,” Chauncey Billups said. His reasoning? So Hamilton can realize how difficult it is. “I came in last twice.”

Billups said he tried to convince Hamilton that the contest isn’t as easy as it looks, but Hamilton wasn’t listening.

“He told me that,” Hamilton said. “But I ain’t Chauncey. He can’t shoot better threes than me either.”

    I love it!

Rip Hamilton, the lovable scamp with the tramp ball makes his stamp and becomes the fantastic 3-ball champ!

3 times, fast, say it, go!

Let’s face it, there are many people outside of the NBA that could perform well in the three-point shooting contest. I don’t care how many open shots a guy can hit in a row without any defense on the floor. Every person they’ll have in the contest is capable of going 30/30 or 5/30 on any given day. All that contest shows me is who had their stroke that day to what is essentially shooting practice with an audience and fancy lights. I’d like to see Rip enter it and win, but I really could care less who wins that contentest. I don’t remember who won last year, or the year before that. Seeing Rip cash threes against Detroit’s opponents is all that I’m concerned with.

wlm, i get what you’re saying, but why such a harsh reaction? who cares about any of the contests? i couldn’t tell you who won the dunk contest, the skills challenge, the three point contest or even the all-star game itself any year ever. basically, it’s all meaningless. However, i agree with rip, it’s annoying hearing commentators from other markets say that he’s like reggie miller, but with no 3 point shot. such statements are moronoic, he led the league in 3pfg% two years ago. i’ll try to remember to watch, i hope he wins.

But I loved Craig Hodges, and I remember Jason Kapono.

That’s the best competition all weekend.

  5. 5 Ronnie DeLaura

Kapono won the 3 point contest last year and I cannot believe any of you would not know that.

  6. 6 Shinons

He could compete. I think his style would fit the contest better than Chauncey because of his always consistent form. I hope he gets his chance to show it.

  7. 7 Sauce1977

    Quick!

Someone tell Rip that Chauncey can’t help - also, Rip can’t use a trampoline.

Kyle, you’re right, I probably was a little harsh, but why expend any energy trying to disprove “moronic commentators”? Come on, morons and commentators go hand-in-hand for the most part. You know that whoever wins the three-point contest will recieve extra praise everytime the hit from beyond the arc during a game. Blaha is great, but if Rip were to win the contest, would you really want to hear him reminding you of that everytime RIp connected from beyond the arc during a game. And for the record, most commentators will say that Rip is a lot like Reggie without AS MUCH RANGE, I’d agree with that. There’s no shame in residing in the shadow of Reggie when it comes to three-point shooting, he was the best.

Now, if the contestants had to do a full-court suicide before each shot (I know, the # of shots would have to be reduced), I’d be pretty confident that Rip would win. The best shooters to me are the ones with stamina that have the same form in the 4th quarter as they do in the 1st. A big part of Rip’s shooting strength comes from his ability to out-last his defender and get himself open. I’d like to see some of these so-called “3-point experts” percentages once they got rubber legs.

My problem with the All-Star contests, besides the actual game, is that there are dudes on playgrounds across the country that could perfrom about the same if not better than a lot of these “pros”. I’m not implying that there is a big guy with a game better than Dwight Howard’s out there, but there are guys we’ve never heard of who would put him to shame in a slam dunk contest.

Keep it real, you can go onto youtube and find some 70-year old guy that can out-shine NBA players in a shooting contest, three-point, free-throw, or otherwise.

Sidenote: I did see this video a while ago called “Sheed’s trick shots” on need4sheed.com that had me bugging out.

AND WHY DO LEBRON AND KOBE GETS PASSES FOR NOT ENTERING THE DUNK CONTEST????

It gets me irked that Lebron’s dunks always get a lot of attention yet he won’t display what he’s really capable of during the dunk competition. I don’t care to watch a dunk competition if the best dunkers won’t be participating.

  12. 12 LanierFan

Sheed introduced the term last year with his famous “bang that tramp” quote, describing his ability to make shots from all distances as the occasion dictates. He is nothing if not quotable.

  13. 13 Kyle

    wlm,
why should they be in the dunk contest? maybe if there were some defenders they had to weave through it would mean more, but right now there are guys on playgrounds who can put them to shame in dunking. etc. etc. etc.

either the whole thing is pointless and rip is wasting his time or the whole thing isn’t pointless and kobe and lebron should have been forced to compete. i think you’re trying to argue both sides.

  14. 14 LanierFan

Ah. Here it is, from April 2006:

“I go wherever my shot will take me. They give me that tramp, I will bang that tramp. Give me the low-post, and I will go in the low-post. If it’s a mid-range J, then I’ll knock that down. It don’t matter. Anywhere on that 94 is my range.”

  15. 15 Kyle

i want a t-shirt that says “I will bang that tramp.”

  16. 16 kramer

I was thinking he probably said “trey ball” and got misquoted… Anyone actually heard the quote?

  17. 17 Tbranch

Kapono shoots a good 3ball with a defense in front of him too.

51% this year and 46% or 47% career (5 years or so).

    And he’s no shory… He’s like 6′8″.

  18. 18 WLM1

Arguing both sides? Kyle, if this issue had only two direct sides that might be possible, but if black and white is your thinking then I’m gonna stay grey. If they’re going to have an NBA slam dunk contest, it should include the best dunkers in the NBA, as should the three-point contest. I just think there could be better contests that would be more entertaining.

Whatever happened to horse? You know, h-o-r-s-e? Have the leading vote getters play horse. That would be entertaining, plus the players would actually have a chance display abilities unique to themselves. Isn’t that what horse is about in the first place? Being able to make a shot you don’t think the other guy can? That would be a better contest to me than guys shooting 30 3-pointers.

If there are going to be competitions, at least use the best the league has to offer. This pertains a lot more to the dunk contest than the three-point shootout.

  19. 19 Kyle

it’s possible. but i also know that sheed likes using slang and it wouldn’t surprise me if a wide open, yet undesirable shot was referred to as a “tramp.” also the use of the word “bang” and the obvious analogy it completes might not be coincidental.

  20. 20 Kyle

double entendre, not analogy. sorry, just got home.

  21. 21 fadango

I agree that the 3 point contest usually judges who is hot at the time, but last year when Kapono won, that was right on.

  22. 22 joejoejoe

The Pistons should have an internal team 3-point competition. Rip, Chauncey, ‘Sheed, Jarvis, Tayshaun — they have players who can shoot the tramp ball. I’ll bet they could get a few sponsors to put up $1,000 per player and have a competition after practice and give the winnings to a Detroit charity. My money is on Rip.

  23. 23 LawyerBoy

OT: I finally admit fault in maintaining Darko is good all these years and then what does Darko do? He goes for 14 (on 6-10 shooting and 2-2 from the line), 16 boards and FIVE blocks in 40 minutes against a solid Denver team with an impressive counterpart in Camby. Who is this Darko Milicic and why is he such a mystifying character?

  24. 24 lynn

    wow…tramp ball, that’s just classic.

  25. 25 Fel

@LB - Gangsta’s like to keep it mysterious

Yes, “bang that tramp” and “tramp ball” are great expressions that I will endeavor to use as often as possible. Can any player compete with Sheed when it comes to coming up with crazy slang and expressions??

  26. 26 LawyerBoy

Fel - Hilarious. Darko is a gangsta.

Just remember that they kidnap people where Delfino is from, according to Sheed. Hysterical.

  27. 27 WLM1

So the main topics are “tramp balls”, “banging tramps”, and “gangsta’s”…What is this, January or something?

  28. 28 Mike Payne

    Next DBB shirt:
Rip’s face with the slogan, “respect my tramp ball.”

  29. 29 Srecko

Ha Ha darko is gangsta, darko is an idiot

It has been submitted, and I fully agree, that Nike (or whomever) should help sponsor a $10M prize for the winner of the dunk competition. Not only would the LeBrons of the world show up, but the kids would go crazy for that opportunity. You’d see some astonishing stuff, and interest would skyrocket.

  32. 32 Juyjuy

They will let him play if he takes his mask off players were scared because they thought they were guarding Jason Voorhees.

I LOVE the Darko-Kwame frontcourt. If anything could make League Pass worthwhile, it’s the Darko-Kwame frontcourt.

  34. 34 Jacob

I agree with Juyjuy… Detroits fans are off the hook though…
