The Pistons and Pacers play tonight at the Palace (7:30pm, FSN), though the big story the rest of the league is buzzing about is “Jason Kidd going back to the Mavericks.” ESPN’s Marc Stein has the details:
The deal — salvaged from talks on a three-way trade with Portland that developed and fizzled quickly two weeks ago — has Dallas sending 24-year-old point guard Devin Harris, veteran swingman Jerry Stackhouse, the expiring contracts of center DeSagana Diop and swingman Devean George and guard Maurice Ager to New Jersey for Kidd and forward Malik Allen.
Sources say Dallas will also add the league-maximum $3 million in cash and send its first-round draft pick this June as well as a first-rounder in 2010.
The Nets are expected to buy out Stackhouse’s contract immediately, which could enable him to re-sign with Dallas if he waits 30 days, and ESPN The Magazine’s Chris Broussard reports that the Nets and the Mavs are likewise poised to complete a separate trade that will send swingman Antoine Wright to Dallas for a future second-round pick.
Huh. I don’t have much to say about that at the moment, other than confusion why the West is importing every aging star from the East these days. If the Mavs get Stack back, though, that’d be a coup for them.
As for me, I’m off to the Pistons game — I’ll be filing pre-game, halftime and post-game reports for HOOPSWORLD. Feel free to discuss the Kidd trade and/or tonight’s game in the comments.

The story going around is that New Jersey might not want to keep Jerry Stackhouse and may consider buying him out of his contract. Dallas hopes to get him back, but what if Stack wants to come back to Detroit? We can pick him up, if we release Brezec or Hermann. This will be interesting to see how this particular story develops.
*sorry matt for not reading the entire post. I kind of repeated what you quoted already…lol
I don’t like this trade for Dallas. On the other hand, I don’t like Dallas.
I think Dallas gave up to many draft picks. Who do they have to play PG after Kidd retires.
I wouldnt mind seeing Stackhouse back in Detroit. Would hurt having him come off the bench thats for sure.
The ESPN trade machine Beta actually says this trade decreases Dallas’ win percentage by 17.07%
I don’t think Kidd is going to retire any time soon. He’s still churning out triple doubles and performing at a pretty high pace. Whoever said in the last posting that everyone out West is going to beat eachother up in the playoffs was spot-on. Shaq/Amare/Nash, Kobe/Pau/Odom, Nowitzki/Kidd/Howard, Duncan/Parker/Ginobili….there can be only one NBA finalist, fellas, and then you’ve gotta go through Detroit.
“I don’t like this trade for Dallas. On the other hand, I don’t like Dallas.” - Charles X
I’ll co-sign that.
Dallas had a good squad, so what if they had a bad road trip, it happens. Seems like team owners and their presidents of operations don’t realize that you’re going to lose some games. Either that or the NBA is really looking for ways to draw in ratings and boost those revnues. I mean, damn, the Shaq/Gasol talk is still fresh, do the sports media really need more stuff to fill up between game articles with? What’s in store for next week? Michael Redd gets sick of losing and demands a trade? The Spurs have been struggling a little, better ship Duncan off before complete disaster strikes.
After these last couple of weeks, I’d say it’s safe to say that there are a few people around the league that need some sense smacked into them, preferably anyone involved with the Suns, Mavs, or the owner of that thing in Memphis they call a franchise.
If that’s not possible, then I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the Warriors knock the Lakers, Mavs, and Suns out of the playoffs.
Big Ben in Utah? The Jazz would be making a mistake by getting rid of Millsap. Kirilenko is expendable, but I think that team just needs time, not a dumbass trade. Besides, the Bulls already messed up by not trying for Gasol during the summer.
Yeah, I really, really don’t understand what Dallas is doing. It’s not like their window to contend was rapidly closing, or anything. Dirk is in his prime, Devin Harris and the Jet are fairly young. If they could just combine Sagana Diop and Erick Dampier into one entity known as Saganick Diopier (like I’ve been arguing for in my fantasy league), they’d have been just fine. This trade is at best a wash if they get Stack back, and it’s a big loss for them if they don’t. I thought Cuban was smarter than this. I’m really confused.
Also, are we still making “holy crap Amir in the first!?” comments?
I like Amir and Max on the floor together.
(Except when Max goes and gets a really dumb goal tend, dang it)
Where the heck is everybody? Amir is all over the place right now. He might be playing the best out of anybody on the floor.
Amir is all hustle and I love it!
Also, I think I’m going to start calling him the “Junkyard Dog II”.
Going into the half up 12? Good.
Completing a series sweep against Indiana. Better.
Winning 10-in-a-row? Great.
Seeing the Stones starters running plays for Amir? Priceless.
@Diablo: What about JAMir?
Sauce, you’ve got to start selling shirts with your Amir logo on it. You can put me down for three XL’s.
Well, another 55 points put up at the half, unlike last night however, the Pistons have a 13 pont lead. I’d really like to see them put this game away in the 3rd.
Eh, JAMir is ok but he needs a nickname that discribes his all-around-game (which for the most part is his hustle play).
Here we go with the refs again. It’ll be interesting to see if Amir can keep up his high level of play.
its safe to say the game has been put away, with Indiana held to a whopping 10 points in the third
Thank you Detroit, a 25-point lead after three is what I had in mind.
Let the Zoo Crew loose!
Even if it were true that Amir was useless on offense, which it’s not, all he’d have to do is rip down a few more boards and he’d be producing the kind of numbers Ben did. I’ll take it.
ALERT!!!
Devean George has blocked the J-Kidd trade. I think that’s what the headline said. I’m sure they’ll work something out, but at least George is causing some headaches for Mark Cuban.
@Diablo: JAMir Blockson.
Man, now that is what a bench is for.
Sauce doesn’t like it when Amir plays 31 minutes per game.
Niiiiice game. Indiana wasn’t even trying - they looked like a bunch of college kids right before spring break in a lit class.
More work for the kids = good
Rip vs. Kobe in the 3-ball-deal = shhhhweeeeet
Oh - and Devean George is playing a dangerous game with his nix.
“JAMir BLOCKson” haha, I like it.
Also, 9 Rebounds, 8 Points, AND 7 BLOCKED SHOTS! This Amir guy can play some basketball.
Another good win and strong showing by the young guys. Most minutes logged by any player was Chauncey with 30, always a pleasing stat. If there was one thing that has caught my eye lately, it’s been McDyess’ offensive struggles. I’m not that worried about it, especially with the team system the Pistons use, but I’d like to see him get a few more touches (this really is a very minor complaint).
If that Kidd trade goes down in the next few days, who is going to take his place starting for the East?
Chauncey will start the all-star game.
On another note, my wife suggested that Indiana is called the Pacers because their crappy play causes the coach to pace back and forth and scowl.
Does anyone else feel at least a little bit sorry for Devon Harris? He has to spend years under a former PG turned coach in Avery Johnson who was coached by Greg Poppovich, so you know Johnson has been as hard on Harris over the years as much as any other Maverick. Plus, he was part of a 67-win team that experienced a crappy playoff series. I’ve thought that Harris has been creating his own identity on that team these last couple of years and then out of nowhere he’s getting traded to New Jersey. That’s not to say that Kidd isn’t an upgrade over Harris, but you’d think that Harris had paid enough dues to not get shafted like this.
Methinks New Jersey is trying to set the stage for a “young, less-cap-crazy but very hungry” Brooklyn club to which would entertain LeBron’s fancy.
“Oh - and Devean George is playing a dangerous game with his nix.”
George: (cell phone rings) What up.
Dirk: Dude, it’s Dirk. What the hell is Cuban thinking?
George: Well, it’s his team…
Dirk: No, dude, you gotta stop it.
George: What?
Dirk: I’ve been looking through the paperwork. You had a no-trade clause. Use it, and that will give us time to come up with a plan.
George: I dunno… Hold on, someone’s on the other line (click)
Josh Howard: Dude, I’ve been looking through the paperwork.
George: I know. Hold on, I’ve got Diggler on the other line (click) Yo, Dirk.
Dirk: Do you know anything about bee stings? Cause I’ve got a rash…
“Methinks New Jersey is trying to set the stage for a “young, less-cap-crazy but very hungry” Brooklyn club to which would entertain LeBron’s fancy.”
That, or they’re invoking the old “whenever someone offers you a younger, better player, plus a starting big man, plus draft picks, plus cap flexibility, plus cash, you take the deal,” rule.
I think it’s safe to say that Cuban is NOT good with PG decisions.
Re the Kidd trade, I’m ok with the “win now, worry about tomorrow later” theory. The only problem as applied to here is that the Mavs are giving up way too much here, and how many rings does Kidd have? I mean, how much of an upgrade is it from Harris to a 35yo Kidd?
lol, good one Kevin.
But I want Dallas to be the Western Knicks!
And to think, Cuban could’ve resigned Nash all those years ago. Now he’s getting an older but inferior point.
