I don't understand all the trepidation about having Ratliff as the 5TH big man. Who would be a better alternative as the 5th big man? He sure has looked useful when asked to step into a starting role thus far, what more could you ask of a 5th big man?

i think we're set. we've got great starters, a great young bench and a great vet bench. we've had enough time to see what all these players can do, and we know what it looks like when they're not doing them. there is something kind of big (to us) about each player (and the coach) we could debate and bitch about all day. but i see no reason to rule anyone on this team incapable of stepping up and performing in the playoffs. i think this team can do it, i'm sure of it. everyone seems to be picking la to win it all and that downright

pisses

me

off.

we're better than them.

bring bynum back.

we're still fucking better than them.

welcome back pg4l, you were missed

Sauce just hates Amir! I kid, I kid. I kind of agree with everyone, which is hard, cuz PG4L sort of disagrees with the board here, but I agree with her too. Everything is fine in Piston-land for the forseeable future. EVERYTHING (unless not winning a championship, which winning one is not a given by any means, is not "fine" by your definition). We will continue to do well drafting (ie: like Shinons says w/Simien [who I actually wanted, that draft, my bad.] vis-a-vis Maxiell). We'll continue to depend on rent-a-big like PG4L says. V is right that Joe will keep us successful. And JesseC is right that it's too early to tell with Theo Ratliff's Expiring Contract. Somehow I manage to talk a lot but not really say anything. I'm done now.

Sauce-- if Amir was a top 5 pick that went to teams like Seattle, the Clippers, or Memphis sans Gasol, that might be a different story. If he was getting 25 mpg, he'd likely have grown out of that foul trouble by now (and the referees might have gotten to know him).

Look, I think you're all forgetting that we're a front runner....

There isn't going to MAGICALLY be another top 10 pick in Detroit's future until Chauncey's wheels fall off (and maybe not even then if Stuckey is half as good as everyone keeps telling me he is but I never see on camera).... In that light you get game where you can get it and Theo has game RIGHT NOW. Next year we will STILL be looking for an extra big (hint EVERY TEAM IN THE LEAGUE is looking for this right up until it becomes apparent that they won't make the playoffs, then they SELL their aging bigs to a team like Detroit... or just cut them, whichever)... Either way I think you all need to get used to the idea that so long as this magical 50 wins every time out run continues (and its been what almost 6 years now) we are ALWAYS going to be looking for "another body with a defensive mindset" on the cheap going into the deadline period. ALWAYS.

Why can't that be Theo next year if he's the best choice? Seriously?

And please don't give me that Amir/Maxy crap, even if they BOTH explode next year (hardly a given to be frank) you STILL essentially need more than 4 bigs and none of this is taking into account that Sheed or Dyees could concievably call it a career (or in Sheed's case be moved as an expiring contract) at ANY time. You can't seriously tell me that winning rings isn't worth it if Amir doesn't play 25 mins a night because the kid needs to learn to stay on the COURT THAT LONG FIRST.

Sorry for the yelling but come the f-ck on now, we're talking about next year and developing young bigs while this team is on pace to win 50+ games and finish at worst SECOND in the Eastern Conference?

It's ALL about rings and hells yes the Pistons are closer to getting them because Theo is around. Get used to it, contenders RENT talent... the Atlanta Hawks draft it. Who would YOU rather be?

Too many of you guys here are looking at the glass being half-empty. When Theo is your 5th big man, chances are you're going to do pretty well with the other 14 guys on the roster. Whatever decision Joe D makes on Theo will undoubtedly be the right one.

Max, Amir, Samb are all players with great upside with differing levels of experience. Max reminds me a little of Wes Unseld and will probably be the 6th man for the foreseeable future, Amir will likely be the starting 4 for years to come, probably in 2009, and while Samb has a long ways to go, he's come a long ways in a short period of time.

if anyone is interested, true hoop had a piece saying that all three leaders from MVP Garnett, kobe and james all came straight out of high school with a follow-up that statistically players right out of high school actually do better than those that came from University

As we all know the last guy taken straight out of high school is our own Amir . . .
