What are the tiebreakers against the West? It’s possible the Pistons have already clinched home court advantage, the piece in the Free Press today notwithstanding. In a 3-way tie at 57-25 with the Lakers and Hornets, the group standings would be:
Detroit 3-1
Lakers 3-3
Hornets 2-4
If it’s a tie with the Hornets alone, Detroit won the season series, 2-0.
If it’s a tie with the Lakers, they split the season series, 1-1. The issue is what the next tiebreaker is. I have yet to find what it is, but everyone on the internet seems to assume it’s the same as the Conference seeding tiebreakers. But how much sense does that make? Little, to me. It would seem to make marginally more sense to use your record against the *opposite* Conference. If that’s the case, the Lakers are 20-10 against the East, and the Pistons can do no worse than 21-9 against the West. If true, that would indicate the Pistons have, in fact, already clinched.
By the way: I committed the cardinal sin of blog-reading by not catching up on what I hadn’t read since the last time I’d been here, to reflect the fact that you grappled with this issue last week. So sorry!
Does anybody know someone who works for the team or league to get a definite answer on this? It may well soon be a moot point, but it’d be good to know for future years.

Boston and Cleveland should be a really interesting match-up in the 2nd Round, I hope Boston gets the same treatment we recieved last year.
Although it wouldn’t make any difference in the East, it’d be nice if the NBA re-seeded the teams within the Conference after the first round. That way if there are any upsets out West, it’ll actually change the tournament path.

I kinda think Orlando has the best shot at a sweep in the first round (and then they turn around and get swept in the 2nd, hehe). I really think Atlanta is more likely to steal one from Boston than Toronto is from Orlando. We shall see.
