Terry Porter will be the new head coach … in Phoenix

ESPN says it’s already happened:

Multiple sources told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith that Terry Porter is the new coach of the Phoenix Suns.

Suns general manager Steve Kerr called Porter on Saturday morning to offer him the job, and Porter accepted.

A. Sherrod Blakely says it hasn’t yet, but probably will:

Terry Porter may very well wind up coaching the Phoenix Suns. But a source who has had discussions with Porter today, said the Pistons assistant had yet to receive an offer from the Suns as of 3:40 EST.

When an offer comes - and there’s a very good chance that it will come sometime later today - Porter is expected to accept it immediately with a press conference likely scheduled for Tuesday.

Either way, this looks like it’s in the bag — congrats to Porter.

Thanks to DBB reader Aaron for passing this along.

Good for Terry. I hope we get Mike Woodson as our new coach. The more I think about it I feel Curry needs a little more time. I just got some info that we will send Billups to Miami for the number 2 pick. Not sure how true this is but what do you guys think?

  2. 2 Laughton

If that info is accurate then I am shocked.

In other news, the JSOnline has a piece about trading Michael Redd. It also mentions a possible trade involving Billups and Bogut.
All speculation, but at least there’s a story out there.

  4. 4 Other Matt

Care to tell us how you got that information? Otherwise I’m going to assume we didn’t trade a consecutive 3 time all-star for a draft pick straight up.

so billups for beasley? i wouldn’t say i wouldn’t do it.

And may his (next) Head coaching gig be like his playing days….Oh so close to a title, yet oh so far away. Phoenix needs a total rebuild, not a recycled coach. That system has proven time and time again that it doesn’t work in the playoffs. TP seems like a guy that won’t shake the foundation enough to start in a new direction. Nash, Bell, Boris, GH, Shaq, and ‘Mare, aren’t enough. How many Western Conf. teams are gonna play run-n-gun ball and flame out in the Finals(if SA falters) before they realize that basketball is played 48 seconds at a time? Dallas,Phoenix, Golden State, Denver, et al., these teams are talented, but you must play hard on both ends. Sorry, rant over, I just hope TP realizes this before he ends up coaching Diana Taurasi. He deserves better.

@Carey: I think our buddy Phil Saunders would agree with you about Mike Woodson……………………….

And as far as Billups for a top 3 pick? All day every day, and twice on Sundays. Rose/Beasley/Mayo is what this team needs. The “core four” has maxxed out. There has to be an injection of not only youth or talent, but both. Maxiell, Amir,Stuckey are great…Great supporting players. As bad as it sounds, I long for the days of Stack or GHill. There is a comfort in watching an 89-89 game with a minute left and knowing the Pistons have a game changing player. A player that will have the ball in his hands as the game clock approaches 0. Who have we had the last few years? Rip/Sheed/CBills? Exactly!!! We need a player that everyone watching knows is getting the ball, including the opposition, and is at their mercy. Win or lose. With the new NCAA rule, the young guys coming in are ready to handle games in the crunch. Who was more highly touted, Sebastian Telfair or Derrick Rose? Pretty close after high school, but who will be more ready? I only use these two as an example. I know all the college-matured pg’s that failed…

That’s an interesting trade. I just don’t see Miami doing it. I could see this deal maybe in 2010, with the rich FA class and Riley’s preference to win now, but the timing is off here. Being a ‘SC alum, I’m partial to Mayo, but Beasley would be ok, too. I’m not so big on Rose, or the Memphis program in general. I think Chad Ford’s analysis of the draft (Miami trading down to get Mayo) makes a lot of sense, too. I really don’t see some sort of 3-teamer involving Minny and Miami where they swap picks, and Detroit sends Sheed or Chauncey and the #29 to one of them to draft Beasley or Mayo. Or maybe Chauncey straight up to the Clips for Brand. The latter deal makes more sense to me. I really don’t see us trading a vet for a rookie under almost any circumstance.

I believe the idea is to win a ’ship in 2010. I think that’s a possible goal. Unless something miraculous happens along the line of the KG/Pau giveaways, we’re probably going to see that 6 ECF string snapped this year, in the hopes of being able to be an elite team in 2010 and beyond. Although it’s a long way away, we’ll have our pick of FAs next year. Joe D’s decision making processes certainly has this in mind.

is there any source to the claims of detroit tryna get melo on realgm??? is anyone exited or a tad bid anxious like i am about such a deal

  11. 11 Other Matt

If we’re trading Billups for the #2 pick, there better freaking be something else involved there, like an expiring contract or something. No matter how highly you think of Beasley/Rose/Mayo, you have to get more for Billups than that. Especially from Miami, a Billups/Wade backcourt leaves them one piece away from being a serious contender. His value, particularly for a team like Miami, is much higher than “top 3 pick”.

  12. 12 Carey

Melo for Billups? Tay will be six man of the year//

  13. 13 kevin s.

Actually, the trade Ford proposed would be Billups and Maxiell for the #2 pick and some bad contracts (Banks, Blount). That would give us a core of Beasley, Prince, Hamilton, Stuckey and Johnson after Sheed’s contract, with no wiggle room for improvement. That core wins 43 games.

  14. 14 DJ

@Carey “Melo for Billups? Tay will be six man of the year” Melo can’t win, he is selfish and rejects the concept of TEAM, why would you want to inject that attitude into the Pistons? The only Nugget that would benefit Detroit is Camby, but he is too old. I cannot see us moving anyone of the “core” to Denver.
@Kevin S. I agree. Stuckey is good, but he has limilted offensive range, Johnon is still somewhat foul happy, and Beasley is an unknown that leaves Prince and Rip to cover at least 60 percent of the offense, figure they can consistenlty score 18 and 23 a night that leaves us scoring roughly 90 ppg, I don’t see that as enough to win 40 games. Beasly (who will more than likely be a 3 in NBA) may be able to play the 4 on a perimeter oriented team, (assuming your list has Amir at the 5) but is his perimeter game ready for the NBA? I see Rip and Prince as the only true outside threats in the rotation. Also I think our defense is MUCH weaker without Sheed and Billups.

I would like to see Detroit stay where they are and draft a true PF or Center (I am a strong advocate of Amir playing the 5), I disagree with LawyerBoy though, I don’t think Devon Hardin has enough upside to be anything more than Ben Wallace, and I for one do not want to see Detroit revert to a 4 man perimeter offense again. JJ Hickson, could be a good fit and a nice short term project.

  15. 15 Quick Darshan

The problem with trading is that Joe Dumars has constructed a team that on paper has almost no flaws. Yes, more players that can get to the basket would be good and a true C would help rebounding but from a skill level, the team stacks up with anyone. The only problem was a lack of hunger.

The pieces complement each other so well that any trade will leave holes. It’s probably going to take multiple trades to keep the team in contention.

  16. 16 LawyerBoy

DJ: On a respectfully agree to disagree tip, wasn’t Ben Wallace the anchor of our championship team? If Hardin could be 70% what the Ben Wallace of 2002-2004 was, he’s a steal at #29. The rest of the core 4 (or whoever takes any core 4 member’s place) will provide the offense. While Hardin’s offense is limited, it’s certainly not going to be as limited as Ben Wallace. Hardin has 3 inches on Ben too. And Hardin can at least make 60% his FTs, so we don’t really have to worry about Hack-a-Hardin.

Hardin is ready to contribute right now, and I think that would be very valuable to this squad. While I favor Hardin, I’m certainly not opposed to any other players.

QD: I got a few prospective trades I’ll be proposing on DBB soon which I believe would (at the very least) keep us where we’re at right now.

  17. 17 Toledo Joe

I’m with Quick Darshan in that it’s hard for me to imagine *reasonable* trades both teams would do that would make Detroit better, in large part because the Pistons have at least 4 starters already who are in the top echelon of their position in the league. What Detroit needs most is a center who can score consistently in the post (well, given Rasheed, let’s say “can and will” do that) and a backup SF. I can see getting a backup SF in some way (although the Pistons have been remarkably bad at doing that in recent years). But centers with a dominant post game are hard to come by — oh yeah, and we want one committed to playing defense too.

So we would probably have to give up a lot, which makes me nervous. I’m not saying stand pat for sure, and hey, sometimes you can get ridiculously one-sided trades like LA and Boston did, but let’s not do what Dallas and Pheonix did.

  18. 18 Garrett

People keep mentioning the Boston trade as being one-sided, but I clearly remember a split here at DBB between people who thought Boston was genius, and people who thought Boston was crazy. Al Jefferson is no slouch, and tonnes of folks thought Boston made a mistake trading away their future for their now. Looks like it worked out for them (so far) but it wasn’t nearly as lop-sided as the Gasol debacle.

  19. 19 DJ

@LB: Ben Wallace was one the leaders of the championship team, but he was not the anchor. I think the bench we had then played more of an anchor role than Big Ben. That being said, the championship team was hungry as was alluded to by QD, something that has been missing, perhaps one could say Big Bens leadership (or the loss of) has contributed to this. San Antonio’s prolific defense aside, Detroit needed offense to beat them in 2005 and my fear is Hardin will move us back to a four man offensive team. Our defense has not suffered and our offense has improved since Wallace left, what the team needs is an attitude adjustment, and Hardin, regardless of his upside sir, will not provide an attitude adjustment to a veteran team. I would think we would want to focus on getting a perimeter guy to give Prince some back-up (or keep Herrmann and work with Afflalo), or maybe another 4 to groom for the eventual departure of McDyess and Rasheed, Amir seems to have the requisite skill sets to play the 5 and Samb is waiting in the wings, seems to me that drafting Hardin right now doesn’t help this team for 2 to 3 years (at the earliest), and as previously mentioned, we appear to have the 5 covered.

  20. 20 Quick Darshan

    Spitballing here…

Sheed and the 2nd round pick we get from Min. for Curry/Wilson Chandler

Gain an dominant post presence. Lose a dominant post defender.

    Starting Lineup:
    Chauncey, Rip, Tay, Maxiell, Curry
    Rest of the Rotation:
Stuckey, McDyess, Amir, Chandler/Hermann, with a dash of Afflalo

Now I know you hear Curry and you’re immediately skeptical (I don’t blame you).

But, I think a collection of big men that includes Curry, Maxiell, McDyess and Amir has a very diverse skill set.

    Thoughts?

  21. 21 kevin s.

“Gain an dominant post presence. Lose a dominant post defender.”

No. Gain a solid post presence. Lose a solid post presence who can shoot the three and defend.

As for Hardin, I think the Leon Powe factor makes it a non-issue. I’m not terribly impressed with his rebounding numbers in college.

If we are looking for a Ben Wallace clone, you can’t go wrong with Joey Dorsey. Everything about that guy screams Pistons, doesn’t it?

  22. 22 Quick Darshan

“Lose a solid post presence who can shoot the three and defend.”

Doesn’t help if your solid post presence is too soft to get his ass on the block.

  23. 23 Quick Darshan

That being said, I’m in favor of keeping the roster and letting the contracts expire.

  24. 24 Sauce1977

After Game 2 of the Finals, I am pretty much at the mercy of utter dejection for a fair match in this league.

  25. 25 Sauce1977

I can’t even write clearly, really.

There’s little hope for a fair match in this league.

  26. 26 Quick Darshan

Didn’t see the game because I was at the Dodger game where I was outnumbered by Cubs fans, but according to Phil Jackson:

Leon Powe got more free throws in 14 minutes of play than the Lakers did the whole game.

  27. 27 Sauce1977

    Correct, QD.

I love basketball. I hate the NBA.

If there was a league alternative, I’d plead for Bill Davidson to consider it.

  28. 28 JackDutch

i saw ‘cloverfield’ over the weekend. as i was watching game 2, THAT’S what i was hoping would happen: giant monster steps on neu-garden. i was rooting for that. sadly it didn’t happen.

also, watching this series angers me soooooo much because i KNOW we would have beaten l.a. the guys that tay has issues matching up with are 3s who are stronger than him (lebron, pierce). finesse 3s like mcgrady and kobe, he eats up. gasol is soft, and the rest of that squad ain’t ready to shine. my only concern going in would have been lamar odom, and he looks out of sorts. we were the 2nd best team in the league this year.

we’re going to blow up the 2nd best team in the league.

  29. 29 LawyerBoy

JD: Relax man, I know how you get with the pessimism sometimes. But, this isn’t Cloverfield, my man. Joe is not the giant monster who’s going to destroy everything in his way (unless everything in his way is what you call other GMs). He said “changes, not fire sale”. Hell, we may see all core 4 back, as it’s not like Joe can control what he can get and it’s not like because Joe SAYS something it’s become fact. I’m more impressed with what Joe does and doesn’t do than what he says in a press conference right after we’ve been eliminated. Besides, if he ever gets a load of my soon-to-guest-post trade ideas, we’ll be just fine.

  30. 30 Boney

    LawyerBoy,

We don’t want to see any trade ideas involving Kendrick Perkins.

    Regards,
Boney, Matt Watson, Sauce1977, that Prophecy guy who had Philly beating us in the first round, PistonsGirl4Life (where did she go, I passed her in comments?), and the rest of normal thinking fans.

  31. 31 LawyerBoy

Boney: Funny, funny. Of all people, like I would trade for him? I wouldn’t even trade away the kid who always dances shirtless on the PalaceVision for him, and that kid doesn’t even take the floor!

  32. 32 Boney

That kid that dances shirtless either needs to see a Dentist or he needs to stop smiling when flexing his muscles… that is an ugly bastard right there
