Oh, ok then that DeVon Hardin guy people are jizzing over :)

  10. 10 Steve in OH

Also thinking maybe CDR, Ibaka, and Arthur if he’s still there maybe, for the record.

  11. 11 Jim

    Richard Hendrix

  12. 12 Diablo

Geez, that is like 8 draft picks in a row that were not able to make the Draft Ceremony.

  13. 13 Other Matt

    I think we go CDR.

  14. 14 J

I wonder what has caused the big-time drop for Arther…

  15. 15 Steve in OH

The Yi trade earlier is interesting… and I think Pritchard is nearly as much a genius as Joe D.

  16. 16 Other Matt

Wait! I didn’t see Free T-Shirt to FIRST person to get it right.

I’m changing my mind and going with DJ White.

  17. 17 Matt Watson

For the record, my fingers are crossed for CDR.

  18. 18 Steve in OH

Wondering what’s up with Arthur and Chalmers myself.

  19. 19 Other Matt

Yeah, I’m hoping for CDR. I would be okay with Arthur, too, he’s a really good player. I don’t think he lasts that long, but it’d be a freaking steal. Actually, either one of them would.

  20. 20 Steve in OH

I remember a little of CDR from the Tourney and if I recall, he seemed like a good player.

  21. 21 ReichardZ

I think CDR won’t sit there that long…

  22. 22 Jim

CDR is a little smaller then I would want in a back up SF, but I love what his offensive game would bring to us…he’s always beating his man off the dribble and getting in the paint.

  23. 23 Steve in OH

Hmmmmmmmm… and they just keep falling towards us.

  24. 24 Steve in OH

Well, one more pick and then we’re guaranteed one of CDR, Arthur, or Chalmers… should we want to go that direction.

  25. 25 joejoejoe

Seattle only cost me a t-shirt and I’m bitter. Imagine how Seattle feels about Oklahoma City.

  26. 26 ReichardZ

    CDR: Craving Detroit Return

    OK…that’s lame

  27. 27 Steve in OH

For the record, I think we’d do well with CDR/Arthur/Jordan/White and we’re going to have at least one of them to pick from.

  28. 28 Jim

We’re going to have some interesting players left for our pick…only 2 more until we choose.

  29. 29 Steve in OH

Kidney issue? Arnie can fix a kidney! I love how ESPN just disclosed the undisclosed kidney issue, btw.

  30. 30 J

So ESPN apparently just said Arthur’s deal is some kind of a potential undisclosed kidney condition…

  31. 31 Matt Watson

So … does Arnie Kander’s witchcraft work on kidneys?

  32. 32 Jim

Kander will get him a new kidney on the black market. I’m sure he’s got connections.

  33. 33 Matt Watson

Also, this is why you don’t make promises! I don’t think anyone expected this many good players to fall this far …

  34. 34 Steve in OH

    DraftExpress on CDR:

“He’s a very effective basketball player, he really has the ability to shoot the ball. He’ll be able to come off pin-downs and screens in the NBA and be a very good spot-up shooter, and that will open up drives for him. A guy who can shoot the ball like he can will be in the league for as long as he wants. He is a great floater, and is just a very smart all-around player. He’s not a one-trick pony. He’s a player you can throw in the game and ask to get baskets for you because he knows how to read defenders. He’s learning every day, and is very efficient.“”

“Pros: Best player on best team in country?”

    I like.

  35. 35 Forty

Lol that’s a reason not to take him at 10, not at 25. These teams are out of their mind. Unfortunately buford and pritchard are in front of us.

  36. 36 Steve in OH

    IUPUI?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. 37 Jim

Other Matt…what are your thoughts on Arthur since you’re a big Kansas fan?

  38. 38 joejoejoe

Croatia had a soccer player who played with a kidney transplant in Euro 2008 so you can play elite sports even with somebody else’s kidney inside you.

  39. 39 Steve in OH

And we all know that Arnie will only use the best, Grade-A, Croatian-approved, five-star kidneys on our players!

  40. 40 Other Matt

I’m on the phone, what’s going on with Arthur, I see rumblings about some undisclosed kidney issue. More details?

  41. 41 Steve in OH

Andy Katz just reported that the NBA is saying that they ran tests and Arthur has a kidney issue, that’s all the details. He also reported that he spoke with Bill Self and that there were no known kidney issues when he was at KU.

  42. 42 Other Matt

I love Arthur, really comparable to Julian Wright. Can shoot out to 18-20 feet, good on the boards, very athletic. Kind of mediocre from the free throw line. Think younger McDyess with the potential to be a better defender.

  43. 43 Steve in OH

    Think never mind… :)

  44. 44 Other Matt

Good for him, Portland just got an unbelievable steal.

  45. 45 Jim

and Portland gets Arthur too? Unreal.

  46. 46 Forty

    Fu pritchard, fu

  47. 47 Kev

de-andre jordon, we can afford 2 develop him, he has a chip falln diz far n if any1 can motivate catz its joe n co!

  48. 48 joejoejoe

Are the Pistons going to get Mario Chalmers?!?

  49. 49 Other Matt

Wow, Portland is just running circles around the rest of the league right now in terms of making intelligent personnel decisions.

  50. 50 Steve in OH

    Pritchard is a Genius!

    Let’s see… Oden/Roy/Aldridge/Rodriguez/Webster/Bayless/Arthur… impressive.

  51. 51 Forty

To review, pritchard got a big slashing pg who some people had #4 in the mock for jack and his pick…plus picked up diogu. Then he bought darrell arthur, who goes mid lottery without this kidney nonsense. He’s the best gm in the game, sorry joe.

  52. 52 joejoejoe

What is Portland going to do next year — play 10 guys 24 minutes per game?

  53. 53 Steve in OH

I do kind of have to agree, Joe D might have just been dethroned… but it’s not over till it’s over!

Portland is definitely my Western Conf. team of choice, partly cause I have family there, and partly cause it is one helluve well-run organization.

  54. 54 Steve in OH

Well look at that, we have our choice of…

    CDR
    Chalmers
    DeAndre Jordan
    DJ White
    Bill Walker

  55. 55 joejoejoe

ESPN.com is so lame. They still have pictures of Pau Gasol on the Grizzlies page. They are the Worldwide Leader in Suck.

  56. 56 Other Matt

    Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeere we go…

    Steady drum beat… CDR… CDR… CDR…

  57. 57 Jim

Portland already made a big trade to get a stud pg/sg to pair with Roy, yet they still have so many good young guys left. All they need to do is trade some combination of their young guys for a stud SF.

Their starting line up would be Roy/Bayless/X/Aldridge/Roy plus they’d still have a deep bench.

  58. 58 Jim

Let’s go Joe D! I’m backing you no matter who you take.

  59. 59 Steve in OH

Methinks Joe D might have visions of Mateen Cleaves with a CDR hometown pick… anyone else think so too?

  60. 60 Other Matt

Is anybody else kind of terrified that Portland might try to use some of it’s young players and stuff to get one of our guys? Is Pritchard officially like Billy Beane where you pretty much know you’re going to get effed if you trade with him? I think I’d just hang up if he called.

  61. 61 Diablo

Drew Nitzel! Drew Nitzel! (spell check) :D

  62. 62 Steve in OH

Well hey if Portland dumps 2 new guys for Chauncey or something I don’t know that I’d have any problems with that… they’ve got some great young players over there.

  63. 63 Other Matt

I was really hoping Bucher was going to break a “Arthur to the Pistons” story there.

  64. 64 Steve in OH

    Moment of truth, folks…

  65. 65 Jim

Other Matt…do you think they’d target Tayshaun? He’d be perfect for them. We’d get Outlaw and ……

  66. 66 Other Matt

Maybe I want Walker after that description from Bilas.

  67. 67 joejoejoe

    DJ White!

  68. 68 Steve in OH

    Hmmmmm… alright, Joe.

  69. 69 Other Matt

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Free T-Shirt for Matt!

  70. 70 Jim

Welcome to the Zoo Crew DJ White!

  71. 71 Other Matt

    Jim, the answer is Bayless.

  72. 72 Forty

Kill me that promise story was true. Trade joe d for pritchard!

  73. 73 Steve in OH

Well he definitely does fit our mold… but he wasn’t the most exciting guy on the board… not that exciting wins games or championships. Ask Phoenix.

  74. 74 Diablo

DJ White! Awesome, we need a player like this, a big man that will play in the paint.

  75. 75 Other Matt

Forty, DJ White is no slouch. All 8 people who follow Michigan basketball (guilty, I’m an alum, sue me) will tell you that they have nightmares about DJ White.

  76. 76 Matt Watson
  77. 77 Matt Watson

Also, Other Matt, hit me up with your pick of t-shirt, size and address via email.

  78. 78 Other Matt

Also, theorizing a Tay to Portland trade, maybe you ask for Outlaw/Bayless/Arthur? I dunno. It’s kind of moot, I don’t think we’ll be trading with them, but our biggest gaping hole is a backup 3. I hope we can make a move to get Bill Walker in round 2.

  79. 79 Forty

I know dj white well and am a huge um hoops fan. He’s a fine player. It’s a question of valuation. Cdr and chalmers are first round talents…white might be, but he gets compelling in the early second round, not the late first round. We don’t make this pick if we didn’t promise him.

We should have been on the phone with n.o. and f’ing bought darrel arthur like portland did. That’s the move of the draft.

  80. 80 Jim

Our like a mix of future big men: White/Samb/Maxiel/Amir…they all bring some different skills to the table.

  81. 81 Steve in OH

Maybe we want to turn White into a 5 since he’s not the most athletic but is a tenacious rebounder and post presence… play him with Amir at the 4?

  82. 82 Jim

Did anyone else hear this? This was on Langlois’ chat…someone asked him this but Keith didn’t know if it was true.

Sam (St. Louis): Heard from ESPN that we’re trading DJ White to Seattle for #32 and #46, can you confirm this

  83. 83 Steve in OH

Nevermind my 5 talk since he’s an undersized 4… don’t know what I was thinking.

  84. 84 Other Matt

Forty, it’s hard to argue with your assessment that Portland buying Arthur is the move of the draft, that was criminal.

It’s way too bad that we didn’t get Minnesota’s 2nd round pick this year, we could’ve gone CDR/DJ White or we could’ve gone Walker/White.

  85. 85 Forty

Joe will be back in my good graces if that’s true, we get chalmers or cdr for less dollars and a free option

  86. 86 Steve in OH

I could handle White for the 32 and 46 … we’ll have a pick of most of the guys we just had the pick of, like CDR.

And yea, that was thievery from Portland. Well done, Pritchard.

  87. 87 Jim

Just heard it myself on ESPN…we are trading White.

  88. 88 Other Matt

ESPN just said something about that.

I still get my shirt, right? I WANT that Free Amir shirt!

  89. 89 Jim

We get the 32 and 46 from Seattle…and since Boston just took Giddens we’ll still have a lot of interesting guys to pick from.

  90. 90 Kev

so wat way r we goin? walker, CDR, hardin, deandre??

  91. 91 Steve in OH

Same choices as before… not sure what to do here.

  92. 92 Steve in OH

    Who?!?

  93. 93 Forty

I’d do the tay for bayless, outlaw, and arthur trade every day of the week and twice on sunday…think we don’t get that though :)

Who the…joe wouldn’t this guy be on the board at 46?

  94. 94 Diablo

    Walter Sharpe? -scratches head-

I guess we don’t need a player like DJ White after all…

  95. 95 Jim

All I know is that he’s a pretty talented guy but has had off the court issues.

  96. 96 Kev

walter WHO??? r we tradn white for this guy??

  97. 97 Steve in OH

    Sophomore, UAB

    14 ppg, 7 rpg

    6′9″ … 245 lb

  98. 98 Jim

Keith Langlois: Walter Sharpe … major, major sleeper. He had narcolepsy, of all things, that affected him earlier in his career. We know very little about him, except he came on very late in the draft process and is supposedly a very, very athletic player - a shot blocker. Might be a little bit like Amir Johnson. He was academically inelgible in the second half of last season and played just 18 college games. He went to Mississippi State first and then transfered to UAB.

  99. 99 Garrett

    Walter Sharpe? Zzzzzzzzz….

  100. 100 Forty

Boy, gotta imagine he was going at 33, so could thing we didn’t wait to take him at 46. /sarcasm. What the hell Dumars? He may or may not be a good player, that’s besides the point. This is the Renaldo Balkman pick. Turned out to be decent, but you can’t misvalue where guys will be taken this badly. CDR will not be there at 46. Sharpe would have been.

    ARRRRRRRRRGH

  101. 101 Jim

    Here’s a video with some Sharpe highlights, he’s #42.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=99OCS02NAn8

  102. 102 Jim

    Chad Ford likes the pick.

I like this pick for Dumars. Sharpe is a total sleeper who really emerged in the past few weeks as a legit prospect. The Pistons love his athleticism, length and scoring ability. He’s a project headed for the D-League, but the Pistons had great luck developing Amir Johnson there and will try it again with Sharpe.

  103. 103 Other Matt

Okay, the posts are coming fast and furious, we need to make up our mind about where the conversation is going to continue. Is anybody even here still?

  104. 104 Forty

    I vote here Other Matt

  105. 105 Forty

man am i pissed off right now wow

  106. 106 Kev

our next pic who do we go 4

  107. 107 Other Matt

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHHHH!!!

    CDR gone. AAAAAAAAARGH. WTF.

  108. 108 Forty

    Color me not amused

  109. 109 Steve in OH

    Walker’s still around…

  110. 110 Jim

    I’d be happy with Walker/Hendrix/Hardin at 46

  111. 111 Other Matt

Steve, we’re headed for 1 of 2 outcomes:

Somebody else takes Walker before we pick at #46 OR

Walker is available at #46 and we pass on him.

Those are the only 2 outcomes I can see from here.

  112. 112 Forty

walker is certainly interesting here…i just can’t get it out of my head how much legit possible first round talent we left on the board at 32, wow

  113. 113 Steve in OH

Other Matt… that sounds about right for Joe tonight. Sigh.

  114. 114 Other Matt

I hope that there’s enough bitching going on here that somebody will dive into the archives in a couple of years and prove just how little we all know about basketball after Walter Sharpe becomes the new Amir.

  115. 115 Other Matt

You know, maybe there’s a trade in the works and Joe D wasn’t interested in giving away a guaranteed roster spot because he’s working on a trade where we take back more players than we give up? Maybe? Please?

  116. 116 Steve in OH

That would be ideal… but I can’t help looking over at Portland tonight, pointing, and going, “ummmmmmm?!?”

  117. 117 Garrett

    Free Walter!

  118. 118 Garrett

Wait a minute — do we have two Walters on the roster? What are the odds of that?
And I was playing NBA Live 08 today, and Walter Herrmann has a higher overall rating than Tayshaun Prince. Go figure.

  119. 119 Steve in OH

That’s crazy - that would be like them putting Ben Wallace on the cover of the g… oh, wait.

  120. 120 Forty

I can hear it already: Free Walter DurOdenSharpe!

But seriously, it’s not an issue of whether Sharpe turns out to be good or not. It’s not smart to take a guy 20 picks before you have to. Say Kevin Love turns out to be the best player of the draft. Should Chicago have taken him #1? No! You trade the pick, get some assets, and get Love later.

Joe Dumars may have found a stock he’s sure is going to $50. But he bought it for $47, when it was clearing the market at $35.

  121. 121 Other Matt

    Bill Walker, please!?

    Pretty please, Joe…

  122. 122 Forty

Other Matt, could it have had something to do with not wanting to give up guaranteed money so you can use the full midlevel and stay under the tax?

Regardless, I don’t care about the trade with Seattle…that worked out marvelously. All the guys you’d want at 32 were still there. We just f’d up the pick.

  123. 123 Other Matt

+1 for Forty, that was an excellent post.

  124. 124 Steve in OH

    Please, please, please…

    WHAT THE F****?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!

  125. 125 Other Matt

    I’m so very confused.

  126. 126 Steve in OH

    Trent F’ing Plaisted?

If we still have Walker at 59 then I guess it’s ok… right? RIGHT?

  127. 127 Other Matt

    We lose the draft.

Did we accidentally replace Joe D with McHale tonight? This is weird. I’m rattled.

  128. 128 Steve in OH

I think we replaced him with Jordan, Bird, and McHale.

  129. 129 Diablo

Trent Plaisted! OMG, what a steal! -sarcasm-

  130. 130 Garrett

There can only be one answer: Bizarro World.

  131. 131 Forty

Ok I’m gonna go slit my wrists now. Bilas: “He’s 6′10 but doesn’t play as big as he’s listed”

Seriously just shoot me. This draft couldn’t have played out better for a team picking in our position. Multiple guys who people thought could be lottery material dropped into the 20’s and into the second round. We own the rights to none of them.

  132. 132 Steve in OH

If there isn’t something in the works under the table, then I don’t have a clue in hell what Joe’s up to right now.

  133. 133 Baby J

Are we being punked? This can’t really be happening.

  134. 134 Forty

When Chris Douglas Roberts is in New Jersey’s rotation by February, that sound you’ll be hearing is me weeping. But heck, Tay can play 45 minutes per game right?

  135. 135 Steve in OH

    Are we being punked?

    +1 my friend.

  136. 136 Montes

Any way we can switch our trade with Seattle and get Hardin rather than Plaisted??

  137. 137 Other Matt

Forty, I opened a beer after the Plaisted pick. What a disaster. We’re all flipping out and LB isn’t even here to flip out about us passing on Hardin 3 times!

    I’d recommend the beer route.

  138. 138 Steve in OH

I might go for a mojito… I’ve got a mint plant out back… this might call for more than beer.

  139. 139 Garrett

So would having DJ White have been better than this?

  140. 140 Forty

Anyone else like the irony of our diagnosed narcoleptic being called a “major sleeper”?

  141. 141 trentplaisted

anybody know where i can watch walter sharpe video other than the kentucky highlights

  142. 142 Diablo

Right now, it feels like Matt Millen is drafting all of our picks.

But hey, this is Joe D. I trust he will make good of everything he has done tonight.

  143. 143 Forty

Yes, White would be better. And even that wasn’t that great of a pick. But I had no idea this was coming.

My take on the White promise rumors is that someone heard rumblings of this Seattle trade and misinterpreted it as Detroit promising White. Hence the Pistons source denying the rumor…which was half true.

  144. 144 Other Matt

    Garrett: yes.

Forty: Yes, it’s much needed levity at this point in the evening.

  145. 145 Forty

Another thought: anyone miss John Hammond yet?

  146. 146 Steve in OH

Anyone else like the irony of our diagnosed narcoleptic being called a “major sleeper”?

^ oh that’s funny right there

  147. 147 Other Matt

There better be some really good trade involving one of our core 4 sometime in the near future, because then I’d be okay with us intentionally throwing away 3 second round picks (there’s too much bad mojo going on right now for us to connect at #59).

    And Miami gets Chalmers. Ugh.

  148. 148 Other Matt

    Forty, shhhhhhhhh….

  149. 149 Mike Payne

I love it how everyone is complaining about “wasted picks”. It was the f@cking 29th pick, like we were going to get a serviceable player anyway. Might as well move it for more projects just like Joe did. Do what you do, Joe. I’m not going to pretend like I know better than Joe does…

    Relax, folks.

  150. 150 Other Matt

Dude, come on, the Celtics buying Walker is like salt in the wound. This night sucks.

  151. 151 Steve in OH

    Celtics just bought Walker?

  152. 152 Forty

I love Joe Dumars. He was my favorite player from the late 80’s, early 90’s. He’s done a great job with this team. The Rip for Stackhouse trade was brilliant. Drafting Tay was brilliant. Signing Chauncey was brilliant. Trading for Rasheed was brilliant. Having a scrub who couldn’t get minutes thrown away to you in the Hill sign and trade who subsequently became an All-Star was luck and skill. Stuckey was a home run at 15 last year.

But he also took Darko, Rodney White, and Mateen Cleaves. He’s not infallible. And I am not comfortable with this solely because he’s Joe Dumars. He’s a great GM. But great GMs make mistakes, and this feels like such a time. Luckily, if I’m right that it’s a gaffe, it’s just a 29th pick, as Mike Payne points out.

  153. 153 Forty

shrug, i kind of like deron washington there actually

  154. 154 Steve in OH

Ya never know with Joe D… these guys could be Amir and Maxiell in a couple years… or we could have T-Mac and Kobe on the team next week and have traded away 6 guys… until it’s all over, I have to continue to trust in Joe.

  155. 155 Other Matt

I don’t hate Washington either, but they described him and he seems like a reverse Hayes doppelganger. Which is not good.

  156. 156 JackDutch

it all seems like picking a bunch of dudes on spec. cheap and easily cut. either they show something and stick or we move on with what we’ve got. kind of an underwhelming night.

  157. 157 trentplaisted
  158. 158 E-Double

If we didn’t see anything that wowed us with the 46th and 59th, why not just trade the picks for future second rounders. Draft picks don’t expire you know. We could have maybe traded these for future second rounders. We already have Minnesota next year (I think, right LB?) and the two we got from Toronto for Delfino. I’m not upset, just thought maybe Bill Walker or CDR could back up Tay for 10 mins a night. Maybe wishful thinking on my part.

  159. 159 LawyerBoy

E-Double: We absolutely have Minnesota’s 2nd rounder next year barring we choose to do something with it between now and then. Which, especially now that they dealt Mayo, isn’t going to exactly a bad 2nd round pick. Mike Miller may be badass as hell, but he doesn’t exactly turn teams around (see: Memphis).
