As promised, here’s your game thread. With Clippers draft pick Eric Gordon sitting out with a strained left hamstring, the competition should be a little lighter than expected. Instead, the defensive focus should be on Walter Sharpe, who will face a trial by fire tonight– he’ll have his hands full defending Al Thornton. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments!

my guess is since we’re up by 20, curry would rather not jeopardize injuring stuckey in a meaningless section of an almost completely meaningless game. That and he may just want to get some of the deeper bench some burn. Bynum has been playin well too of course.

After Amir threw it down, a Clipper took the ball out of bounds and Bynum immediately stole it and layed it right into the basket. Four points in about 3 seconds of play, Amir/Bynum!

And how good does Jordan look, 15 and 10? I know it’s only summer league, but the doubts about his abilities were perhaps a bit unfounded?

Other Matt: He was nasty in the first half of their first game too. He’s a big boy with unbridled, youthful enthusiasm. He was doing a little too much undeserved “flexing” for my and QD’s tastes during their game on Friday. We were literally laughing at how ridiculous he was being, but we weren’t questioning the flashes of brilliance he seems to display. With him only turning 20 next week, he’s got quite a future, I think.

most of deandre jordan’s points have come off of detroit big’s stepping and diverting the opposing guards way too far out. They don’t get back to recover so deandre ends up with the rotated passes and a wide open dunk under the hoop.
He’s been solid on the glass though, I will give him that. Although Samb and Amir have been pretty much non-existent…they must have been out late scoring hotties.

Player of the Game: Aaron Afflalo 25 points on 8-10 shooting, 9-9 from the line, with 4 boards. Do you think Aaron feels slighted that all of the hype in the off-season has largely been about what Stuckey will bring to the table next year?
What a pleasant surprise it would be to see Aaron come out and dominate the mid-range game like he did tonight on a consistent basis.
I thought Bynum played well given the time he had on the floor…needs to work on not turning the ball over though.
Sharpe looked good but kind of disappeared after the first 5-6 minutes…Samb needs to limit his jumpers, amir needs to get bigger on the glass, and Stuckey needs to run the actual offense when he’s got players on the floor that know it. It seemed like he was just charging at the hoop without even really thinking about mismatches or working the ball around for the best shot.
Good for Afflalo! Gotta love a quiet, productive player who works hard. Reminds me of someone else from a while back… pesky defender, soft jumper… hmm.

It was not injury-related. While I can’t read Curry’s mind, I would assume it was due to a) our solid lead over LA, b) the performance of Will Bynum (who started off quite rusty, IMO) and c) that it was pretty apparent we’d win the game on the performance of Aaron Afflalo. Afflalo’s performance gave Curry more opportunity to try new things in other positions.
Unfortunately the stream didn’t have play-by-play, so you couldn’t really tell from watching the game, but the Pistons were up 11 at half time and Bynum was playing well. They stretched the lead to 20 in the middle of the third and so Curry brought in Stout. I think Curry may have just felt that now was a good time to get some of the deeper players on the bench some burn.
That or he got injured…but I’m hoping for my first assumption

The more I think about it, I’d like to see Afflalo/Rip/Sharpe be the back up SF’s (assuming we come back to start the season with the same squad). I’m not sure if Sharpe is ready to contribute right away, but you can tell he definitely has some skill.
Some of our best stretches of basketball against Boston came with a 3 guard lineup, and while there are a lot of good SF’s in the East, none of them are great post up threats. Rip showed the ability to guard SF’s last year and I feel pretty confident Afflalo can do the same. There’s 144 total minutes between the 1, 2, and 3 positions, so Rip, CB, Tay, and Stuck could all play 30-32 minutes per game and that would leave 15-20 for Afflalo. If Sharpe can proove he deserves playing time then finding minutes for him is a good problem to have.
Walt needs just a little time to adjust to the speed of the game. By the end of summer league there will be no questions on why he was drafted. B’ham baby.

Jordan posterized all of our bigs something awful. Not just because they were getting back on hedging but because he just out muscled and out quicked them all, including Amir. Reminded me of how the Celtics bigs punked us big time in the ECF.
Amir was also tentatively awful on offense, including missing a dunk and clanking a shot from the elbow while showing terrible shooting form.
It was very depressing in the least to see Jordan do whatever he wanted under the basket with very little resistance.

I agree with Jim.
Ditto Jim & QD. Even if Afflalo’s shot last night was an aberration (and until he does it consistently I’m treating it as such), that guy can defend like a non-rule breaking Bruce Bowen-in-training. Even though it IS summer league, Curry’s been showing a lot of Larry Brown-era full court pressure. Though I have been a Flip apologist in the past, I’m beginning to wonder why we never did this when we clearly had the personnel (starters and bench). Sharpe and Afflalo seem to be taking the ball away at will. Things are skewed in the summer league, but I like what I see.
Aside from perhaps DeAndre Jordan, who I’ve got to assume Joe never bothered working out thinking that there was no way he’d fall as far as he did, I can’t say there’s anyone right now I would have rather seen us pick at 32 than Sharpe. The only guys even worth considering on a level with him (guys like Singletary, CDR, and Sonny Weems), were either attitude problems (CDR) or playing a position we didn’t need.
LB, if Duhon can improve his jumper, than Afflalo who actually had a great mid-range game in college should be fine.
I’m sure the kid’ll work on his range. And at the very least will be able to see Bowen’s corner-three-plus-occasional-drive-and-pull-up and raise him.

Without Eric Gordon, the Clippers didn’t have a chance against what will likely be the best team in Summer League. Tonight, it was Aaron Afflalo stepping up for the Pistons, as Rodney Stuckey got a little bit less playing time. Afflalo finished with 25 points on 8-10 shooting; one of the things you have to like about Arron is that he doesn’t do things he doesn’t feel he can do well, so he didn’t take a single three-pointer. He got to the line nine times and knocked them all down. Now that’s production!
Studs: DeAndre Jordan looked very solid, notching a double-double with 15 points (on 5-6 from the field, 5-6 from the charity stripe) and 10 rebounds. He’s doing a really good job of playing with a high amount of energy, going after every ball that comes near him. Will Bynum had a nice game in lieu of Stuckey getting some rest, finishing with 10 points (4-7 shooting) and four assists in addition to providing great defense for the Pistons.
Duds: After playing well in Summer League, Al Thornton struggled in this game, shooting 4-18 from the field. He’s clearly better than everyone else on the court, but he’s got to be productive as well.

Detroit
Arron Afflalo: 25 Points, 8-10 FG, 9-9 FT, 4 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 2 Turnovers
Afflalo had a great game today, utilizing his midrange shooting ability to take advantage of the absence of LA’s best wing defender Eric Gordon. Afflalo has very consistent form, and while his range isn’t great, he’s a marksman from seventeen feet. He did a great job getting to the rim by running the floor hard in transition and using his dribble to attack recovering defenders. Though Afflalo isn’t the most athletic wing, he’s polished and played to his strengths, helping he stand out as easily the most productive player on the floor today.
-Rodney Stuckey was extremely quiet, seeming to pick and choose his spots rather than playing his game. He played only 13 minutes, and looked good, but obviously wasn’t playing with a sense of urgency, even though it was impossible to ignore his terrific physical approach to the game.
-Cheick Samb and Amir Johnson provide a lot of size and youth up front for Detroit, and both seem bigger than they were last year. Johnson is the better prospect, but backup centers aren’t easy to develop and Samb seems capable of becoming one.
-Walter Sharpe is quite an athlete, but he wasn’t shooting well today. He and Deron Washington showed nice defensive intensity.
Los Angeles
DeAndre Jordan: 15 Points, 5-6 FG, 5-9 FT, 10 Rebounds, 1 Block, 3 Turnovers
Jordan had a very good game today, showing some of his considerable upside. He doesn’t have a high skill level right now, and faces an uphill battle in developing an effective one, but he showed that he can produce with help from a good point guard on this level. Jordon was the recipient of a handful of nice alley oop passes, and while he didn’t show almost anything with his back to the basket, there’s something to be said for using him using his size and athleticism to score without getting touches. Though Jordan isn’t very physically aggressive on the block, he will collect his fair share of rebounds due to his length. He flew over opponents on a number of occasions on his way to some tremendous putback dunks.
Mike Taylor: 13 Points, 3-8 FG, 1—1 3FG, 6-11, 6 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 1 Block, 7 Turnovers, 5 Fouls
Taylor earns mention here for playing relatively well today, especially in the second half when he stopped turning the ball over as frequently. The former D-League star has all kinds of offensive skills, showing great quickness and assertiveness, but he’s been off in both games we’ve seen him play. He can shoot the NBA three and contribute on the glass with his athleticism, but offers essentially nothing in the way of playmaking ability. His seven turnovers are the result of his over-dribbling offensively, and while he’s dominant in some settings, he’s yet to explode offensively in this one. Still not much to be found in term of his point guard skills.
-Al Thornton didn’t look as good today as he did yesterday, facing a lot of resistance defensively and getting taken out of his rhythm early in the contest. He was having a hard time getting to the places on the floor that he likes to score from, slowing him significantly.
-Nick Fazekas has a decent game, but was largely overwhelmed by Detroit’s athleticism inside. His touch lets him finish some open chances from the midrange, but he struggled around the rim.
