Pistons open preseason in Miami

The Pistons have officially kicked off the preseason in Miami, although good luck trying to follow along — not only is the game not being televised, but it’s nearly impossible to find a good running box score online (if you’ve found one, please share in the comments). You can listen via WDFN’s live stream, though, which is better than nothing.

As usual share your thoughts (or vent your frustration about how the NBA makes it so difficult to watch your favorite team) in the comments.

It’s 43-42 good guys at the half, says Rob Otto from the live stream.

  2. 2 Other Matt

Matt Dery just called Walter Sharpe “Sleepy” on the WDFN feed. Is that some official nickname?

  3. 3 Matt Watson

Err, make that 43-42 bad guys — the Pistons are trailing.

Of note, Herrmann is 3-4 from the floor, 2-2 from 3, and 2-2 from the line for 10 points. He also has 2 offensive boards. All this in 7 minutes.

  6. 6 Matt Watson

Stuckey is also off to a decent start — 11 points on 4-9 shooting in 13 minutes.

  7. 7 Michael

Shock win the championship, Pistons start the preseason. What a great day.

BTW, for anyone who hasn’t watched them yet, the Shock are worth watching for any basketball fans (when you can actually find them on TV)

  8. 8 Other Matt

Yes, the only thing left to happen today is a Steelers victory and it will have been a successful day.

I’d ask for a Red Sox loss, but I don’t want to push it…

  9. 9 Garrett

How’s Amir? Uh, not that there’s any pressure on him or anything………..

  10. 10 Other Matt

From listening to only the first 8 minutes of the 2nd half, it seems like same old Amir. Silly fouls, keeping plays alive, hyper activity, inconsistency. He just picked up his 5th after 3 straight tip in attempts. I’m perfectly willing to live with this as he learns. This regular season should be much the same as last year. We all know we’re going to be there at the end of the season, we need to develop these younger guys and integrate them into our lineup according to Curry’s philosophy. I know there are going to be a lot of you DBBers out there that are constantly wringing their hands over Amir’s inconsistency, and I will reply the same way every time: we have to let him play through it in order to find out what we have in him.

  11. 11 Other Matt

    *wringing YOUR hands…

It’s better I catch that before I get grammar policed.

  12. 12 Michael

Please allow me to hop on the “let Amir play through it” bus too. At least for a few stops.

  13. 13 Rob G

i’m hopping on the Shock bus, especially the Katie Smith bus, because the bus kicks total ass!

  14. 14 joejoejoe

Rip is 2-2 from 3pt land. These past few years Rip has been deadly from 3. He’s a legit .40 3pt shooter. With Stuckey driving to the hoop it sets up some nice drive-and-dish lineups for Detroit. 3 three point shooters, a rebounder, and Stuckey makes for a very good offense.

  15. 15 Other Matt

    Another thought…

Even if Stuckey doesn’t improve his shooting percentage, his free throw shooting, which appears to be on par with Rip and Chauncey, is going to help offset a good number of those misses. Being in line for a significant increase in minutes should generate a significant increase in free throw attempts.

  16. 16 Rob G

I’d LOVE to have three guards (Stuck, Rip, and Billups) who hit 85%+ from the line.

  17. 17 joejoejoe

ESPN lists 19 players on the Miami roster. That’s a lot of players.

  18. 18 Jim

Even though it’s only pre-season, it’s so nice to be able to talk about actual Pistons games.

  19. 19 HB

Dumar should have pulled the gun and traded Billups during the summer. His turnovers are intolerable.

  20. 20 HB

Why can’t the NBA streams it live like the WNBA? They made me a fan during the summer when I was following the Shock.

  21. 21 Matt Gibson

what?!?!? Stuckey was falling out of bounds and shot the ball over the glass and in? Hot damn

  22. 22 Rob G

Stream what? Video? they’re doing an audio stream. I’m listening right now. It isn’t as good as visual (apparently some woman flashed the crowd on the Jumbotron - yowza!), but it beats watching HTML updates…

  23. 23 Other Matt

Apparently Stuckey just nailed a shot falling out of bounds where the ball went over the basket from the side. Strange…

  24. 24 Other Matt

HB, if that was sarcasm on Billups, bravo. If it wasn’t, then, dude, it’s the first preseason game.

  25. 25 Mike Payne

    @HB:
uh, trade one of the PG’s who is perenially at the top of the league in assist/turnover ratio? And because of one pre-season game? Insane.

  26. 26 Rob G

    STUCKEY TIES IT UP!

  27. 27 Other Matt

STUCKEY nails the game tying shot with 2 seconds left.

  28. 28 Other Matt

Virtual high five to Mike Payne.

  29. 29 HB

@Rob G, yes streaming video like the WNBA during the summer.

@Mike Payne, why not? How many more pre-season games would you tolerate?

  30. 30 Matt Gibson

OT BABY! I love this game

  31. 31 Rob G

Overtime, people. Get ready. Dig deep. PRESEASON BALL, Y’ALL!

  32. 32 Jim

Anyone know if Stuckey has scored most of points on layups or jumpers or mix?

  33. 33 HB

    @Jim

  34. 34 Rob G

He’s 7-7 from the line. Badass. 23 Points.

  35. 35 HB

Stuckey has fouled out. What the hell are we going to do?

  36. 36 Rob G

    JMax is now taking over.

  37. 37 Jim

    Thanks HB.

  38. 38 Other Matt

And Stuckey is gone. Think I’ve missed basketball? I’m paying more attention to this than the Steelers!

  39. 39 Mannie32

Yezzir… stuckey has been VERY VERY impressive. wish i could have watched this game… very clutch down the stretch of regulation… too bad he fouled out

amir had foul trouble but sounded like he had a ton of energy and had his hands on a lot of loose balls… but yea the fouls limited his minutes… maxiell has played a solid game, especially in overtime

sheed needs to start making good habits… he played 25 minutes but had only 2 rebounds and was 1-7 in 3’s… cleary not sticking to the plan of staying in the paint

but wow so far this as exciting as a preseason can get… pistons up 1 down the stretch of OT

  40. 40 Rob G

Bynum draws a foul, 16 secs to go, up by one…

  41. 41 Rob G

Goddamn, I loves me some basketball and some DBB.

  42. 42 Mike Payne

    @HB:
Chauncey can put up 10 turnovers per game in the pre-season, hell, he can go scoreless. I don’t think Joe gives a damn what the starters do during the pre-season, they’re known quantities, and their career performance records don’t include preseason games.

  43. 43 Rob G

All, let’s not beat up on HB. He’s being irrational. That happens. Just look at Wall Street!

  44. 44 HB

Someone tell Joe D that Laimbeer just won his third WNBA title and is available. If the Pistons can’t even beat Miami handedly in a pre-season game then what hope is there? Beating them by 3 points is not enough.

  45. 45 HB

@Rob G, at least I didn’t say the fundamental of the Pistons are sounded.

  46. 46 Rob G

HB - that’s the quote of the night! Goodnight!

  47. 47 HB

Pistons won by 5 points against Miami. Big deal. Curry and Dumar cannot be happy about the turnovers avalanche. Damn you Billups. Someone put some super glue on his hands.

  48. 48 JackDutch

why did kwame only play 5 minutes? walter sharpe had more minutes.

  49. 49 HB

Anyway, I’m glad the Pistons came through. But man if Rodney fouled out and the team has to win the pre-season game in overtime then that cannot be a good thing.

  50. 50 Other Matt

Okay, seriously, HB: I honestly think that you’re just being funny. Please tell me that you’re just being funny because I kind of can’t tell.

  51. 51 Mike Payne

    @HB:
Did you cry “blow it up!” when we lost a summer league game?

  52. 52 Quick Darshan

So much for Sheed staying in the paint. 7 of his 10 shots were tramps.

  53. 53 HB

@Mike Payne, I didn’t followed the summer league games.

  54. 54 Gogol

You’re being ridiculously reactionary, HB. Starting with the Pistons won the title in 04, the NBA champs of every year in the preseason are a combined 17-16. Preseason is totally meaningless. It’s about letting lesser players get some burn. It’s absolutely not indicative of how your team will perform in the regular season.

  55. 55 Other Matt

HB, I wouldn’t admit that around here, the junkies who were trying to sopcast summer league games might take issue (guilty).

  56. 56 joejoejoe

Other Matt - I hope Matt Watson or a guest poster can do a post on what is and isn’t available for watching games online, what is legal and what is copyright infringement, what is a cheat and what is legit. I watched a few sporting events live on the internet but I’m never sure if I’m doing it the right way or if I should be doing it at all.

Maybe we can all discuss it in an Open Thread some day.

  57. 57 JackDutch

qd: that was the other thing i noticed too looking at the box. nice to see that sheed is taking this season seriously so far. wonder if he shot one left handed.

  58. 58 Rob G

Sheed’s just gotta get warmed up by bangin’ tramps before he goes down on the post! Hotcha!

  59. 59 Laughton

Whats this? I have one night of drinking, wake with a hangover, and the Stones win? I think I found my good luck charm!

  60. 60 joejoejoe

    OT: The UConn-Detroit connection continues…

    SG Rip Hamilton - Pistons
    C Kelly Schumacher - Shock
    QB Dan Orlovsky - Lions

    Let’s go Hus-kies!

  61. 61 Paul M

HB’s bizarro world is funny. Hey! That Dwyane Wade character didn’t do so well. Riley should ship him out ASAP.

For the person who asked about Stuckey’s points:

    Makes/FTs
    9 ft two point shot
    20 ft jumper
    driving layup (and 1)
draws foul on marcus banks (2/2)
    driving layup
draws foul on marcus banks (2/2)
    driving dunk
    driving dunk
draws foul on mario chalmers (2/2)
    7 ft two point shot
16 ft jumper [these last two shots forced overtime]

    misses
    20 ft jumper
    driving layup
    21 ft jumper
    20 ft jumper
    9 ft two point shot
    19 ft jumper
    layup

Seems like he’s driving on around half of his possessions.

On another note, I’m growing more comfortable with Herrmann taking backup SF minutes.

I’m so glad Pistons ball is back.

  62. 62 E-Double

    Three observations:
1.) Herman and Stuckey had nice stat lines.
2.) Amir had 5 fouls in like 19 mins. I know its just the preseason.
3.) Sheed shot 7 3-pointers in the 20 mins he played. Coach Curry, WTF happened to points in the paint? Lets go Stones.

AP recap: “Newly retired Jason Williams, who was with the Heat for three seasons, sat behind the Detroit bench”

File under available old point guards who might be added to the roster should Joe Dumars make a 2-for-1 trade down the road.

God no. White Chocolate has turned into rotten chocolate. He knew when to call it a day.

I woould take Tweety before him.

    Mark my words Pistons fans

Hot Rod has a very good chance to lead us in PPG this year.

After he adds a three point shot he will be unstoppable one on one.

  66. 66 Diablo

“Hot Rod has a very good chance to lead us in PPG this year.”

I told you guys, Stuckey looked really good during the Open Practice. He could be a beast of a player come the 28th of October.

  67. 67 Toledo Joe

Given how the Lions did yesterday (and are doing generally), it’s good that the Pistons have started playing again, even if it’s just preseason.

  68. 68 Skylar

While we’re discussing the Lions, they won every preseason game they played. Whether the Pistons win or lose these early games matters little, to me anyways.

And I don’t want Jason Williams on my team thanks. I’m fine with watching how Kwame turns out, he’s quite enough of a liability without paying Broke White Chocolate to be here.

  69. 69 Slappy

Stuckey now looks like one of the top 3-4 prospects of the ‘07 draft, especially when looking at who went before him. It almost makes up for the ‘03 debacle.
