The Pistons are in Boston

The first time the Pistons faced the Celtics this year, it was Allen Iverson’s second game since the trade and the entire roster looked completely disjointed. For the most part, things have turned around in the five games since, with the exception of the disaster in Phoenix and the first half last night.

Can the Pistons win the rematch and become the league’s first team to beat both teams that made last year’s Finals? Will Coffee With No Cream outshine Kendrick Perkins? Will the Celtics listen to their coach and (finally) stop chirping? Will the always classy KG take any cheap shots? Will I keep asking questions as a device to take digs at the Celtics?

We’ll find out soon enough: the ball tips in a few moments on TNT. It’s still too early to say this is a statement game, but a win tonight would be nice … as nice as an ice-cold CC & Ginger on a hot summer day! (Sorry, couldn’t resist.) As usual, leave your blatant product placements thoughts in the comments.

Statement game. Pistons 95 Boston 88

  2. 2 Mike

I just finished listening to an interview with Brian Windhorst who covers the Cavs for the Cleveland Plains Dealer.

For what it is worth he is almost postive that Dyess will be returning to the Pistons.

  3. 3 Jim

If we win tonight and finish this brutal 4 game stretch at 3-1 I will be very impressed.

  4. 4 Mike

Kwame needs to knock KG on his wallet put him out of the game.

That will make a real big statement

  5. 5 Primosh

    Let’s do this.

  6. 6 Dash Rick

    AI 3

  7. 7 detroitblue
  8. 8 prophecy_projectz

Gonna be a very tough game for the guys tonight coming off that energetic game last night and given Boston’s bigger frontcourt and D

  9. 9 Dash Rick

    Tough, sure, but a win.

  10. 10 Jim

And this is why we got AI.

  11. 11 prophecy_projectz

Very good aggressive start. Strange being on the other side of these slow starts.

  12. 12 Dash Rick

Mean D by Sheed on KG!

  13. 13 Greg

That was a really pretty pass.

  14. 14 prophecy_projectz

Sorry Sheed but as far as Kwame goes

Hollywood Cake>>>> Coffee with no cream

  15. 15 Dash Rick

Love that pass! Sheed for 3!

  16. 16 Garrett

Kwa-may Brown taking the charge! So is he, like, our official starting centre now?

  17. 17 detroitblue

    what a start..

  18. 18 Dash Rick

    13-2

  19. 19 Matt Watson

“Kwa-may Brown taking the charge! So is he, like, our official starting centre now?”

Yeah, it looks permanent. Curry likes how it allows Sheed to go back to PF, and he pointed out how Amir’s speed isn’t as needed in the starting lineup with AI around.

  20. 20 Garrett

It’s kind of funny how things work out.

  21. 21 prophecy_projectz

    Damn Ivy got Rondo’d….

    Get him AI

  22. 22 Dash Rick

My son calls Sheed “Rasheed Walrus”. Not a bad name really. Big. Loud. Ornery.

  23. 23 prophecy_projectz

..Likes to flap around, has large ugly teeth, ball dont lie for either?

  24. 24 Forty

smart act job by KG there - u knew Sheed was going to put himself in a position to pick one up

    stones look really serious tonight

wish they’d call that hook on pierce when he drives, it’s very annoying

  25. 25 Dash Rick

PP… lovein’ it! Big teeth +1.

  26. 26 prophecy_projectz

But we love Sheed, and we love walruses as well…

  27. 27 Dash Rick

    Yup.

  28. 28 Garrett

Speaking of acting job, we just got a brutally late whistle on that Rondo foul on AI.

  29. 29 Garrett

    Sheeeeeed from deep!

  30. 30 detroitblue

what has gotten into sheed man?

  31. 31 prophecy_projectz

    Now thats getting aggressive Rip

  32. 32 Jim

    Sheeeeeeeeeed!

  33. 33 Rob G

I made Matt Watson a present - click here to see it!

  34. 34 Laughton

    Yah, is good so far

  35. 35 Laughton

    ROb G, is nice!

  36. 36 prophecy_projectz

    Now that’s rebounding

  37. 37 prophecy_projectz

    But that aint ball handling

  38. 38 Dash Rick

    GOOD D.

  39. 39 Garrett

Rob G: Seamless integration into the background image! It’s almost like the ad was meant to be there in the first place.

  40. 40 Dash Rick

    BAD O.

  41. 41 Dash Rick

    GOOD REFLEXES BY SHEED THERE.

  42. 42 prophecy_projectz

KG: So aggressive, he drinks 2 cups of Gatorade at a time.

  43. 43 Rob G

@Garrett - a marriage made in marketing heaven! A heaven where they serve CC on the rocks, that is

  44. 44 Laughton

Not a bad start at all.

  45. 45 Dash Rick

Or marketing hell, depending on your perspective.

  46. 46 prophecy_projectz

    Side-note:
    lol@ Leverage

  47. 47 Garrett

Can I make a confession? I don’t really know how to say it….. and I wasn’t sure if this was the best time to say it…. but I really need to get it off my chest. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while now. I guess I’ll just say it: I HATE THE CELTICS SO MUCH.

  48. 48 joejoejoe

Nice to see Afflalo getting some credit on national TV. He’s been unreal for Detroit this year with some sick +/- numbers that come entirely on the defensive end. He’s like a stronger Michael Cooper.

  49. 49 Garrett

(also Rob G: your GMU stuff sounds really interesting)

  50. 50 Dash Rick

Garrett, we feel your pain. We really do. Feel free to speak openly and without fear of consequence. Just get it off your chest. Say what you have to say. Experience the catharsis. Breathe. We are here for you.

  51. 51 Dash Rick

Did Max just air a FT?

  52. 52 Dash Rick

    Yuck.

  53. 53 Jim

Please don’t let Tony Allen have another good game against us. I hate him.

  54. 54 prophecy_projectz

Glen Davis has the facial reactions of a female contestant on any Reality Game show. Seriously, what America’s Top Model shit was that Big Baby. Mouth all wide open like a disable child. Get it together

  55. 55 Garrett

    ……..yes.

  56. 56 Lucas

I hate the Celtics too. And I hate ESPN (not related to this game, but since were venting). And I hate TNT tonight. I want Blaha. And I dont want a story about the Celtics running their mouths, thats nothing new.

  57. 57 prophecy_projectz

Scalabriene? Really Detroit, you gonna let them do that to you?

  58. 58 andyfrombrooklyn

matt watson, your series of questions remind me of don rumsfeld. have the celtics beaten the pistons alot this past year? sure. do we still hope that the pistons can beat the celtics? of course. will we be disappointed again? maybe.

  59. 59 Lucas

    Time to free Amir!

  60. 60 Dash Rick

Time to play some better interior D. Hey, Amir can do that.

  61. 61 Mannie32

pistons havent scored yet in the 2nd qtr? with the big 3 on the bench… ugh that’s really frustrating
i don’t wanna see a repeat of the last 2nd qtr, jesus

  62. 62 joejoejoe

Boston is the defending NBA champions and has 3 Hall of Famers yet the thing that gets the fans out of their seats is Brian Scalabrine. Odd.

  63. 63 prophecy_projectz

    @Lucas:
Against the Celts? lol, go on then….

  64. 64 Garrett

I hate it was crappy players do well against us. When I played ball, I used to get offended when someone crappy guarded me and I probably played even better than I normally did. I wouldn’t let some scrub show me up. Mind you, my game is reminiscent of Jeff Hornacek, but still.

  65. 65 Quick Darshan

Wonder if we’ll see Will By’em.

  66. 66 Lucas

Scalabrine got tired of waiting to be picked at the rec and joined the Celtics instead.

  67. 67 Quick Darshan

JoeJoeJoe, it’s because he’s got red hair.

  68. 68 Lucas

Definitely against the Celtics (whats he going to do… air a free throw and then let Boston get easy points in the paint?)

  69. 69 joejoejoe

My game combines the tenacity of Jeff Van Gundy with the physicality of Stan Van Gundy.

  70. 70 prophecy_projectz

The NBA Cares: Where the fans not really giving a shit happens.

    /Hellbound

  71. 71 Forty

Leon Powe is an intelligent, in control, more disciplined version of Jason Maxiell

  72. 72 Dash Rick

    Breathe Stones. Breathe.

  73. 73 prophecy_projectz

    @joejoejoe:

Sounds like you may spontaneously combust just wathching a 7 game series.

  74. 74 Rob G

@Forty - it’s hard not to like Powe

  75. 75 Quick Darshan

Forty, don’t you mean Leon Powww? Phil Jackson’s really high on him.

  76. 76 Shinons

Dos Equis amber is one fine beer. A 30 year Canadian Club would certainly be finer, but still.

  77. 77 prophecy_projectz

I mean all things considered its not a disaster. Yeah we were up big, but of course you knew the Celts were gonna comeback.

  78. 78 Dash Rick

    I too like Powe.

  79. 79 Forty

Is Tony Allen going to put his name on the Glen-Davis-Kendrick-Perkins-Tony-Allen Cup again?

  80. 80 Dash Rick

I like Powe almost as much as I don’t like Perkins.

  81. 81 Lucas

My game is like Sheed’s minus the talent.

I have more size and strength then most people that I ever match up with, but I’m decent at shooting the 3 and I play like a 2 trapped in a 5’s body. Nobody likes it either.

  82. 82 Shinons

    Poo.

  83. 83 Garrett

Even though I hate House, he’s money from 3.

  84. 84 joejoejoe

Leon Powe is good. He beats paying a 31 year old James Posey $25M for 4 years.

  85. 85 prophecy_projectz

Holy shit, that was an impressive 3! Im not even mad!

  86. 86 Laughton

    dammit

  87. 87 Dash Rick

Ummm. I don’t like any of this. Tay got Tayed.

  88. 88 Mannie32

    why… whyyyy… whhhhyyyyyy

  89. 89 Forty

Fuck what do u do when they are better?

  90. 90 HB

Thanks Prince, instead of being down only 4 the team is down by 11.

  91. 91 Dash Rick

They’re not better. Just tighter. Let it develop.

  92. 92 prophecy_projectz

    Cause its Boston

  93. 93 Forty

Yeah, Prince, stop shooting that negative 7 pointer…

  94. 94 joejoejoe

Doug Collins is whacked. How is Prince supposed to take it harder to the hoop when he’s airborne? Once you are in the air you can’t generate more momentum and Prince was 5 feet from the hoop when he got blocked. Next time I guess Tay should wear shoes with afterburners.

  95. 95 Rob G

We all need to relax… with a tumbler of CC

  96. 96 Michael

Collins criticizes Tayshaun for not going strong to the basket, but when he did earlier in the quarter he didn’t get the call. This is a situation where not going the basket is a symptom of the way the game is being called (on one side of the court), not the other way around.

  97. 97 Anonymosity

Their bench is better than most starting lineups…

  98. 98 Shinons

The big three have combined for 6 points right now. They combined for only 32 points when they beat us last time. Boo.

  99. 99 JackDutch

this game is almost an exact replica of last night’s first half.

hope it’s an exact replica of last night’s 2nd half as well.

or i don’t. whatever. (reverse psychology still in full effect.)

  100. 100 Dash Rick

Stuck is out of sync. We need…………….. BYNUM!

  101. 101 Forty

Stuckey has been a disaster today. He starts out with Pierce on him and should attack immediately. He does not. He finally gets to the rack and picks up a bad charge (come on, if you don’t think Boston’s bigs are going to step in front of you, you haven’t watched much film - gotta dump that off to a big or kick it). Then he completely stops being aggressive.

  102. 102 Mannie32

i understand that stuckey’s game is about attacking the rim… but that doesnt mean he cant pass the fucking ball… he holds the ball for entire possessions it seems… i dunno

  103. 103 prophecy_projectz

Well as long as we dont lose by 20….

    /Projectz’d

  104. 104 HB

    About time Prince dunked something.

  105. 105 joejoejoe

Calm down peoples. If opposition bench shoots 66% for the game on the road you are going to lose against Memphis or Boston or St. Mary’s. Most benches end up cooling off a bit.

  106. 106 Garrett

Bynum vs. Garnett, round 2. Bring it.

  107. 107 Dash Rick

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM TAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  108. 108 Eric

Come on Curry, steer the ship! No Amir? No Hermann? Stucky looks like garbage, so where’s Will Bynum?

  109. 109 Dash Rick

    Kwam takes it!

  110. 110 Tim

    Q-Brown! Yeah baby!

  111. 111 Jim

Wow. That was a really good move by Kwame.

  112. 112 joejoejoe

    Coffee no Cream!

  113. 113 Garrett

Kwame taking it to the rim like that? He needs to do that EVERY TIME. He’s so big and fast.

  114. 114 HB

The announcers are sucking on Kevin Garnett like Jenna Jameson in most of her porn videos.

  115. 115 JackDutch

as much as there are those of us who overhype amir, we are as guilty of doing the same with stuckey. kid has had horrible moments this season thus far. high, high peaks and low, low valleys with him.

  116. 116 prophecy_projectz

That was poor D Etroit Pisons….

  117. 117 Garrett

I’d love to see a stat that says how many lay-ups teams get against us. It seems like our defenders trail guys for an entire play…….until he gets to the rim. Then they part and there’s always a clear path with nobody jumping or stepping in the way.

  118. 118 joejoejoe

Afflalo has been the best young player this year for Detroit.

  119. 119 Dash Rick

    Bynum. Where are you?

  120. 120 HB

If Kevin Garnett is so great then how come he hasn’t had a Championship until he’s on a team with 4 other all-stars? Face it he suck. He’s not that great or dominant.

  121. 121 Garrett

    Herrmann?

  122. 122 prophecy_projectz

    @Jackdutch:
He was like that last year. I mean he’s still a developing player, he hanst even played a full NBA Season yet. Hence why I was a bit suprised that Joe D thought he was ready to take the next step without being guided by Billups. Unless he thought, Iverson could mentor him on another aspect of his game with the scoring.

  123. 123 Forty

Garrett - I think we are way too aggressive with going for blocked shots. In today’s NBA the money play is the charge, not the block. It’s not “gritty Detroit defense” but it’s effective. It has the advantage of always getting you the ball and adding a PF to the other team. That’s basically what Boston does with their second string bigs - and suddenly you can’t drive.

  124. 124 Dash Rick

HB has a point. Though “suck” (sic) is obviously too strong.

  125. 125 prophecy_projectz

Here we go, Rip vs. Ray begins

  126. 126 Tim

    Yes.. move the ball!

  127. 127 Tim

Is Boston exempt from the 3 second defensive rule?

  128. 128 Dash Rick

AI take this game over. Right now. Do it. Right now. Blow up.

  129. 129 Garrett

Forty: I definitely agree — drawing charges is where it’s at. We just seem to part and leave the rim wide open after playing pretty good D all possession.

  130. 130 joejoejoe

Pierce is an elite player. People don’t give him enough credit. I don’t know if he has a bad rep from being on some truly stinky Team USAs or what but Pierce is damn good.

Also, Rip seems a tiny bit frustrated with his new ‘I’m the offense on the second unit’ role. It was only a few weeks ago that he was the offense on the first unit!

  131. 131 HB

This game is looking more like the Cavs game from last night. How did that turned out?

  132. 132 prophecy_projectz

lol@ Charles knocking Wade out of his Top 5 for Yao.

    Thats probably the new commercial

  133. 133 JackDutch

agree, joejoejoe. spellcheck has been a revelation. i can see that kid starting by 2010.

  134. 134 Primosh

About Bynum….i was browsing through some videos the other day…and in like 2 of them he had a nickname “Will Da Thrill Bynum”…i kinda like it.
    Give him some minutes!

  135. 135 Shinons

Why wouldn’t they lead the league in techs? They always get a raw deal from the refs. That finals against the Lakers? Puh-lease.

  136. 136 prophecy_projectz

The guys have no plan on offense. Tay is struggling, Rodney is stuggling.
We are not winning this game. And let me call it in advance: Fuck you Boney if you think otherwise.

  137. 137 Garrett

What’s up with that shove from Perkins on Maxiell?

  138. 138 HB

Celtics is getting cocky aren’t they?

  139. 139 Forty

Boy could Perkins be more of a dickhead?

  140. 140 HB

Garrett, that mother## got a tech out of it.

  141. 141 Mannie32

despite the horrid, horrid 2nd qtr… we’re still in it..,. but what an ugly 2nd quarter… let’s hope for a comeback like last nite’s game

  142. 142 Jim

We’re fortunate to be down 9. I hope we have another second half in us like the one last night.

  143. 143 Garrett

For those of you watching the feed at http://www.justin.tv/psnk4, check out the photo of Tracy McGrady in the banner at the top! Haha! Is that T-Mac or Beetlejuice?

  144. 144 joejoejoe

    9 points down isn’t awful.

  145. 145 prophecy_projectz

    @ Garrett:

I mean its Perkins, what do you expect. The guy stays looking like someone took his ice cream.

  146. 146 Rob G

Max has been brickin’ shots too, that doesn’t help

  147. 147 JackDutch

we were down 11 last night at the half. it’s a carbon copy!

  148. 148 Garrett

HB: Yeah, glad the refs caught it (it was a pretty late whistle for the tech). But it just seemed so……out of nowhere. And Max didn’t even react to it.

  149. 149 Forty

Perkins learned all his bad sportsmanship from the king: Garnett. I think it’s funny that a guy like Rasheed is an asshole while KG is everything that’s right with sport. Rasheed is whiny, but he doesn’t try to show guys up or do all the cheap shot bullshit that KG does. Did anyone see KG running down the floor clapping in Jose Calderon’s face the other day? He’s such a poor sport it’s almost comical.

  150. 150 Primosh

    9 points = no biggie

  151. 151 Shinons

Dammit, why does Kwame have the highest +/- by a mile?? It doesn’t help my case for whining about his minutes every night when he goes and plays well like a big jerk.

  152. 152 Forty

Garrett - if you watch the replay, Max walked towards him and was yapping

  153. 153 Lucas

Forty - but he yells! Hes so intense! Hes passionate about everything!!!

  154. 154 joejoejoe

Garrett - I think they cropped out part of T-Mac’s noggin in that photo. T-Mac doesn’t usually look like a Sam Cassell with a shrunken head.

  155. 155 HB

Didn’t Garnett and McDice got into it a couple of years ago? Garnett is a thug. He’s no great player that the announcers been talking and sucking on his balls all night.

  156. 156 Rob G

They’re really pushing this Yao/Chuck/Wade commercial - that’s some great marketing right there, a bit like plugging a delicious ice cold Canadian Club

  157. 157 Garrett

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: I HATE all of the after-the-whistle stuff Garnett (and now the rest of the Celtics) do. Blocks shots, pulling them out of the rim, slapping the ball away. Some ref needs to T them up one day for unsportsmanlike conduct.

  158. 158 prophecy_projectz

    @ Forty:
Im glad you mentioned that KG-Sheed comparison, cause someone had a great article about that during the ECFs last year. I cant remember who (Maybe Stein on ESPN) but it was basically about attitude and caring on the court and how they arent always mutual and talked about there careers over time since the 95 draft.

  159. 159 HB

Man I want what the TNT crew is eating. I just ate but I want a helping of that.

  160. 160 Rob G

@HB that Mac and Cheese looks tasty

  161. 161 Rob G

Where’s Boney at? We need some acerbic comments

  162. 162 HB

Rob G, damn I want them fried chickens.

  163. 163 Lucas

HB - I bet it would go down well with some smooth Canadian Club.

  164. 164 joejoejoe

I think this is the restaurant that served Kenny and Chuck the food.

    http://www.beautifulrestaurant-atlanta.com/

  165. 165 prophecy_projectz

I had something like that for lunch.

  166. 166 Forty

Well there’s no comparison on the court between the three main PFs from that era: TD > KG > RW. Gap pretty big between all of them IMO. I just hate the after the whistle horseshit, swatting shots away, pounding your chest, cheapshotting Zaza Pachulia in garbage time when your team is about to advance, punching Bogut in the face, spiking McDyess with the ball, etc. Amare does a lot of the same chest pounding but manages to be kind of endearing and not trying to embarrass the opposition. Garnett manages to just be a complete douchebag. An incredibly gifted douchebag, but a douchebag nonetheless.

  167. 167 Rob G

Canadian Club is the only whisky for the DBB squad. Smooth. Refined. Like our basketball analysis.

  168. 168 Laughton

    Get the win baby!

  169. 169 Dash Rick

    Let’s do this!

  170. 170 Dash Rick

We are moving in slow motion.

  171. 171 Dash Rick

Sheed two bad passes in 30 seconds.

  172. 172 Garrett

What happened to Ray Allen? Is he on the court tonight?

  173. 173 Dash Rick

    AI got schooled!

  174. 174 Garrett

I spoke too soon. There he is!

  175. 175 Dash Rick

The whole team just got schooled.

  176. 176 HB

    WTF?

  177. 177 Forty

Boy Rasheed really dogged it on two consecutive plays. Made no attempt to rotate to Rondo (despite the fact that he was covering Perkins - there’s no way you stay home there) and then little attempt to contest with the Allen run-out.

  178. 178 prophecy_projectz

    Ambush!!!

  179. 179 Dash Rick

    Sheed looked lazy there.

  180. 180 Forty

    Liberate Amir!

  181. 181 Forty

    KG scolded that Angry Turkey!

  182. 182 joejoejoe

Kwame Brown looks like a meaty Cliff Robinson with his new short cut.

  183. 183 Dash Rick

    AI = Absolutely Invisible.

  184. 184 Rob G

This is not a night of magic.

  185. 185 joejoejoe

We ran the Washington Generals offense on that play.

  186. 186 Dash Rick

    Ummm defense?

  187. 187 Forty

Rasheed looks completely disinterested. And Rondo is mollesting Iverson.

  188. 188 Lucas

Didnt we use to have a high energy starter that played hard and helped us get fast break points?

  189. 189 Garrett

As Doug Collins might soon say, our body language looks terrible out there.

  190. 190 Dash Rick

    Bynum? AA? Amir? Hermann?

C’mon MC is there a method to your madness?

    Mix it up!!!!!

  191. 191 Dash Rick

    Bynum? AA? Amir? Hermann?

  192. 192 Garrett

Haha! Doug Collins is so much like Tobias Funke it’s not even funny. Quote of the night? “How would you like to be Kevin Garnett’s wife tonight?” Ha!

  193. 193 Dash Rick

    We either rule.

    Or we suck.

    No middle ground.

  194. 194 Forty

We have to get Rasheed off the floor - he doesn’t give a fuck right now

  195. 195 Jim

Our pick and roll defense is terrible right now.

  196. 196 Garrett

Curry needs to snap and yank these guys.

    This game is Phoenix 2.0.

  198. 198 Dash Rick

Rashthreed. Needs to leave the game.

  199. 199 HB

Sheed rather hug Garnett than kicking his ass right now. TRADE RASHEED.

  200. 200 Rob G

    @Garrett; Collins isn’t an analyst, nor a therapist - he’s an analrapist

  201. 201 Laughton

If I was Michael Curry I would pull all the regulars and scream out SUMMER LEAGUE BABY!

  202. 202 Garrett

Too bad Max wasn’t in there to absolutely CREAM Garnett on that after-the-whistle alley-oop they just did. I would have loved to see that.

  203. 203 Michael

Ug. I guess the good news is that this loss is all about the Pistons not showing up and not at all about Boston being a better team. On the other hand, that’s the most frustrating thing about this game. The Pistons that played out west would be womping Boston.

  204. 204 HB

Joe D should have put Rasheed in that trade package with Billups to Denver. McDyce is shorely missed. At least he gives a damn. Rasheed is just standing there watching.

  205. 205 Laughton

Boston is better now, no doubt. I still want to see how we gel as the year goes on and especially in a seven game series.

  206. 206 Fadel

And now I shut the TV…

  207. 207 Shinons

Seriously if they aren’t going to cover and save my $5 bet (seriously, a 7 point spread??), at least free Amir and Bynum.

  208. 208 Forty

Ugh so frustrating. Kwame has been the only bright spot. And what does Amir have to do to get minutes? He was tremendous against Boston in the first game. He should have been in for Sheed as soon as Rasheed stopped trying.
