Dery: Pat Sullivan not returning to Detroit Pistons

New Pistons coach Lawrence Frank's search for a coaching staff to join him in Detroit is nearing an end, and it looks like Pat Sullivan, who previously served under Frank while with the Nets from 2005-08, is on the outside looking in. From 97.1's Matt Dery:

#Pistons staff nearly complete. Pat Sullivan will not be back. A great young coach who will be an asset to any NBA staff. Will be missed.less than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Despite Sullivan's ties to Detroit's championship season (he was an assistant coach/video coordinator in 2003-04 and was on Detroit's bench in 2004-05), the fact that he was also a first-hand witness to the Michael Curry and John Kuester era works against him. It's been years since this organization has enjoyed a healthy player/coach dynamic (Flip Saunders' first season?), so I completely understand Frank's desire for a clean break from the past.

That said, I wish Sullivan luck. Despite all the money this league generates, assistant coaches get relatively little of it, and even less security. Sullivan seems to be universally well-liked with a good deal of experience for his age, so hopefully he'll land on his feet.
