Kevin McHale takes leave from Rockets; reportedly attending to family matter

Houston Rockets head coach Kevin McHale has left the team indefinitely to attend to a personal matter, according to the team.

I'm not sure I want any dubious reasons to lead to the Detroit Pistons getting their first victory of the season, but tonight's opponent, the Houston Rockets, are decidedly at a disadvantage as the team will be without head coach Kevin McHale.

McHale will miss tonight's game and possibly more as he attends to a personal matter, according to the team. Assistant coach, and one of the runners-up to Lawrence Frank for the Pistons head coaching gig, Kelvin Sampson will lead the team in McHale's absence.

ESPN is reporting that McHale is dealing with an illness of one of his five daughters but the Rockets aren't saying anything publicly.

A source told ESPN.com's Chris Broussard that an illness to one of McHale's daughters prompted the sudden leave. McHale and his wife have five children.

There is no timetable for the return of the second-year coach and Hall of Fame player.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said: "Kevin is a devoted family man who is needed back home in Minnesota at the moment. The Rockets organization will keep Kevin and his family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

He didn't provide any further details on the specifics of the situation.

James Harden will play tonight for the Rockets. Pistons defense, you have been warned.
