Pistons vs. Wizards final score: Detroit lays egg in 4th quarter, loses second straight to Washington

For the second time in three nights, the Pistons lost to the Washington Wizards, a team they had beaten seven straight times before that. Hopefully 2014 brings better Pistons basketball.

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

What happened:

Up nine going into the fourth quarter, the Pistons dropped merely a dozen points in the final 12 minutes, getting outscored 28-12. The Pistons shot 20-percent while the Wizards shot 57-percent. It was as ugly as it reads.

It's the team's second loss to the Wizards in three nights and their third straight loss overall.

What stood out:

The fourth quarter. A big reason the Pistons only scored 12 points was because everybody's favorite duo shot 2 for 12. The Pistons only had three other shots.

The Pistons got away from what helped them build double-digit leads in the second and third quarters, resorting to the infamous chuck fest from Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith. Jennings was a passing wizard through three quarters, collecting 13 assists opposite 4 turnovers, but he finished with 14 and 6. He was also 0 for 3 on threes in the final frame, whereas he was 2 for 5 before that.

Who stood out:

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope entertained in the first half, scoring a career high 17 points and locking up Bradley Beal in fits. Pope's 11 second-quarter points helped create a 10-point lead for the Pistons at halftime. However, after shooting 7 for 9 in the first 24 minutes, Pope only managed 2 shots in the second. Silliness.

For the Wizards, Kevin Seraphin scored all six of his points in the fourth quarter.

Bullets:

-- Josh Smith played almost all of the second half after being benched for the entire second half against the Wizards on Saturday. Unfair.

-- Andre Drummond had 16 points and 16 rebounds.

-- Greg Monroe had 22 points and 10 rebounds, yet only played five minutes in the fourth quarter.

--  The Pistons could have had a much bigger lead going into the fourth quarter if not for their free-throw shooting (15 for 28). They finished the game with eight extra attempts, but the same number of makes as the Wizards.

-- John Wall led all scorers with 29 and hit a huge jumper late in the fourth quarter after some admittedly decent isolated defense by Brandon Jennings. Wall got to the line 15 times.

-- Box Score

-- Seriously, I can't believe KCP had such a great first half and only put up 2 shots in the second half.

-- The Pistons cling to the No. 8 seed in the East, but are now a season-high five games below .500.

-- Five days off to stew before the Memphis Grizzlies next year.

-- Roll Call
