NBA trade rumors: Joe Dumars is working the phones in Detroit

Not actually Joe's phone, but it'd be cool if it was.

The Pistons have a lottery pick and $20 million in cap space, but that doesn't mean they're limited to the NBA draft and free agency to improve. It's possible, Joe Dumars suggested Thursday, the Pistons will use some of that cap space to help acquire an expensive veteran from a team looking to avoid the luxury tax.

From Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press:

He emphasized with a weak free-agent class, the path back to relevancy will likely come via the trade market.

[...] "It’s already started," Dumars said at the introductory news conference for new coach Maurice Cheeks. "The phone calls for that have already started. The calls have already started because those teams are already facing it."

In terms of potential trade bait, the Pistons have plenty. Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva are entering the final years of their contracts, and I wouldn't be surprised to see either one moved. Brandon Knight, the man without a position, might also be available, especially if/when the Pistons select a point guard two weeks from now in the draft.

Of course, when it comes to salary dumps, you don't always have to give up talent to receive it -- especially when the receiving team has cap room to spare. What potential trades do you want the Pistons to pursue this summer?
