NBA free agency rumors: Pistons interested in bringing back Chauncey Billups?

Chauncey Billups is a free agent and the Pistons have been linked with several point guards. Why not Billups?

USA TODAY Sports

For the second offseason in a row, former Piston and NBA Finals MVP Chauncey Billups is a free agent and the Pistons are looking for a point guard. Chris Broussard tweeted that "Detroit has done interest":

Billups signed a one-year deal to stay with the Clippers last offseason, but the J.J. Redick/Jared Dudley deal makes it less likely he'll be re-signed. Billups said in June that he would be interested in joining the Heat next season, but who knows if the interest is mutual.

What we do know is that Billups has a special connection with the team with whom he signed a six-year, $35 million deal 11 summers ago and ultimately helped win a championship. Just this past December, Billups came to The Palace as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers and said during an in-game interview that he will always be a Piston.

And he said "never say never to any situation" when talking about potentially signing with the Pistons last summer:

"I will just say this, first and foremost: No matter what happens, I’m a lifetime Piston. I always feel like I’m a lifetime Piston," Billups told the Free Press this morning at the Palace. "As you know, I would have loved to retire a Piston when I was here, but that really wasn’t in the cards.

"You never say never to any situation. I got nothing but great memories about here and winning, and this building was on fire. I would like for my memories to stay like that."

Maybe if Dumars signs and/or trades for some interesting pieces, the Pistons will be enticing enough for Billups to want to return in a back up role (he hasn't come off the bench since 2001-2002), help create some more positive memories while helping the team in a different capacity, and then retire as he ought to, as a Piston.

What do you think? Would you be happy if the Pistons were able to sign Billups and did?
