Hey dudes caught in 4 day Pistons preseason drought I thought it would be fun to catch up on what's been happening with the Grand Rapids Drive.
October was a busy month for the Drive hosting two open practices, one at Oakland University on October 4th and one on October 11th at Calvin College. The Drive put out a call for 150 dudes and the call was heeded. 60 players showed up for the Oakland practice on the 4th. Out of those, 6 were chosen for a 2nd tryout joining 83 other participants in GR on the 11th. Among those who participated in both tryouts wereformer Notre Dame guard Tory Jackson, former Oakland University forward Calvin Wooten, former Ferris State and Creston forward Jerrell Sanders and former Hope forward Will Bowser.Sanders played last season in Germany with BG Bonn-Meckenheim of the Euro Basketball League. Bowser, who graduated from Midland Dow High School, has played overseas as well. "I played in Romania, Asia, Germany, Denmark and Canada," said Bowser.. After the tryouts Head coach Otis Smith said he would take up to 5 guys from the tryouts to training camp, which starts on November 3rd, where they will be a part of the 17-20 man training camp roster. And if that wasn't enough Otis Smith has to get ready for the D-League's 2014 8 round draft! The draft is on November First and apparently the Drive have the number 1 and number 5 picks in the first round. But that can change with D-League teams being able to trade picks up until the 31st of October. So there you go all the info I could find about the current state of the Drive. Also as a side note please go over and give some love and comments to SB Nation sister site Ridiculous Upside where Mr. Kevin Schlosser is working hard to provide quality D-League content. As future Drivers (fans of the Drive) it would be great to get this man some much deserved traffic (maybe on D-League Draft day during breaks in the Pistons game?) Thanks guys, hope it was informative.
