From the very first minute of the game, there was seemingly no air in the Pistons' sails. Maybe it was because it all went away with this Josh Smith air-mailed pass. Or maybe it was a shot? It wouldn't surprise me. D.J. Augustin and Caron Butler each airballed during the game. The Pistons shot 37 percent. They've shot under 40 percent in 5 of their 13.
Of course, it did not help that Greg Monroe did not play much of the first half. He picked up his second foul early in the first quarter and his third only 2:19 into the second and did not play the rest of the half. The Pistons were down 10 going into the third.
The Hawks did not miss the bottom of the net much. They shot 60 percent from the field in a 29-point first quarter and cooled very little throughout the rest of the game, killing the Pistons on pick and rolls en route to 48-percent shooting on the night.
With Jonas Jerebko, Kyle Singler, D.J. Augustin and Greg Monroe/Andre Drummond on the floor, the Pistons showed some signs of life late in the third and early in the fourth, mounting an enormous 19-point comeback to actually tie the game at 74-74. But the Hawks went back up six in the blink of an eye and hung on for a 10-point win.
In another warm homecoming, J-Smoove put up probably his best quarter of the season in the first 12 minutes with eight points, all of which were in the paint, four assists and three rebounds. Unfortunately, he followed it up with Josh Smith things, shooting 4-11 the rest of the game, including several missed long jumpers. He finished with 16 points, five assists and eight rebounds.
Despite shooting just 5-12, Andre Drummond had his best game of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds. He missed a few tip-ins and got called for two goaltending violations (three actually, but one got overturned at the end of the third).
With 70 of his friends and family in the crowd, Georgia product Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was a no-show. He finished with four points and three steals, all in the first quarter.
Jeff Teague burned the Pistons' guards for 28 points. I know this because every time he scored the gigantic head above was held up, blocking my view.
The Pistons, now 3-10, don't play again until Tuesday. It's going to feel like two years.
More in a minute. Now your thoughts.
