NBA Rumors: Dumars could be candidate for Cavs' GM opening

This little rumor might not be as crazy as it first appears.

Joe Dumars has been synonymous with the Detroit Pistons since the moment he was drafted 18th overall in the 1985 NBA Draft. He's responsible for three championships and a Hall of Fame career spanning nearly 30 years. That is why when I saw a rumor that Dumars was a candidate for the GM opening in Cleveland, who the Pistons face tonight, I did a double take.

As the HoopsHype tweet indicates, it's hard to believe that Dumars is a candidate for another front office opening considering his cache around the league might be at an all-time low. But it's not as crazy as it seems.

Per ESPN, writer Brian Windhorst, formerly of the Akron Beacon Journal and someone who knows the Cavs organization inside and out, was a guest on Detroit Sports 105.1 and mentioned that Dumars and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert are neighbors, and apparently show a lot of mutual respect for each other.

Listen to the audio here.

And, hell, perhaps even more importantly, the move could be the result of a lack of respect Gilbert has for current owner Tom Gores. Perhaps the two are in a rich-man's fight to be the richest Michigander. In the past, Gilbert has told Gores that the Pistons obviously need to move downtown and alleged that Gores doesn't go to NBA owners meetings. A sweet one, that guy.

To put it mildly, the idea of Dumars taking the reins of the Cavs is not sitting well with their fans.

Of course, this is all predicated on the idea that Dumars' days in Detroit are numbered. And while all signs are certainly pointing in that direction, this franchise has continually surprised Pistons fans, and often not in a pleasant way.
