Today, we celebrate the one year anniversary of one of the great days in the history of Detroit Basketball. A year ago today, Stan Van Gundy cut Josh Smith.
At the time, the Pistons were 5-23.
The Pistons went 27-27 the rest of the season. They are 16-12 so far this season, so in the SVG Josh-less era, the Pistons are above .500.
I remember where I was at the time. I was fortunate enough to have the day off and was picking up my fiance from work to take her out to lunch. On my way to get her, I was parking to pick up a last minute Christmas gift when the news came on the sports station I was listening to at the time. I was stunned. I ran into get the gift. I was checking Twitter as I checked out. I couldn't believe it! A Christmas miracle had occurred.
I picked up my fiance and she asked why I looked so happy. She was stunned by the level of giddiness I was experiencing. I explained the news and she thought I was ridiculous.
Well, I am ridiculous, but I was right to be happy. The Pistons still have a ways to go, but are above .500 for a calendar year. The thought of that seemed beyond belief on December 21, 2014, but here we are.
Let's all take a moment to enjoy the fact that the Pistons are putting out an NBA product once again and look back on this great day in Pistons history. Hope you all have great memories of this wonderful day as well.
