Detroit Pistons Offseason Plans

Option decisions:

  • Caron Butler ($4,500,000): No, I liked him as a leader and he came in and made some plays but that's too much for someone his age. Possibly would like him to come back on a smaller salary (<$3,000,000)
  • Shawne Williams ($1,356,146): This guy couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. He supposedly has the skill set were looking for but he didn't perform. No, to picking up his option.
  • Cartier Martin ($1,270, 964): We didn't see much of him this season but if he couldn't crack the rotation with the players we had, he's not worth keeping, I would rather develop someone younger. No, to picking up his option
Draft:
  • Pick 8 ($2,368,300): I see four potential options (Winslow, Johnson, Hezonja, Turner). The Pistons need to hit on this pick, they need a small forward, with not picking up Caron's option they don't have one on the roster. I don't like euros, I believe they need more time to develop and the Pistons need a guy who can come in and contribute now. If Winslow is there, that would be my pick, if not, Stanley Johnson should be the pick.
  • Pick 38 ($507,336): I would like Pat Connaughton (Notre Dame) can shoot the lights out, athletic, competitor, leader. However, he might be playing baseball instead of basket ball so we'll have to wait and see on that.

Free Agency

  • Re-Sign Reggie Jackson. He wants to be here, he has a lot of raw potential, him and Andre seem to have great chemistry in the pick and roll. You have to be mildly concerned about his three point shooting but I don't see why he can't develop into an average three point shooter. We have the PG position locked down for the next 4-5 years. In a perfect world (which I will assume for the sake of the post), we can sign after we do our business with other FA's to go over the cap. (4 years $54 million).
  • Let Greg Monroe go. I understand this will not be popular with the consensus but this is for the best for both parties moving forward. The Pistons need spacing on offense with Reggie attacking the basket and also Andre being almost exclusively an in the paint threat. Greg Monroe just isn't the right fit for the dollar he is going to command.
  • Go for the Homerun with Green/Love. Figure out whether or not Golden State is going to match (I suspect they will) but see if you can get Draymond to the D. It's not likely we can get either but I would try. K-Love probably won't resign with CLE because they need to give the $$ to Thompson. Love would be a great fit, Van Gundy would have to wine and dine him but not completely unreasonable. Draymond Green, at his core, is the definition of what a Piston has stood for in the past and should stand for now. Unfortunately, I'm going to be realistic and see neither of these happening.
  • Sign Loul Deng- The Pistons need a SF. Van Gundy likes veteran, Loul shots 35.5% from three last year and he's always played good defense. He has a player option with the Heat, that he could exercise. I think Riley is going to be looking to move him off the books in a trade to get Wade re-signed. (2 years $21 Million).
  • Sign David West- Hear me out. Who is a better player that can come in and help establish a culture of defense and toughness. This is not a long term play but one that could help lay the foundation for the future. (2 years 16 million, team option 2016)
  • Re-Sign Joel Anthony- Guy just plays hard and can bring a defensive spark off the bench.
This would put the team roughly at the projected salary cap. The roster is not completely filled out but that can be Stan's job :). This team is a little bit older but could be a solid team in the East. I would like to sign a young player like Tobias Harris/Khris Middelton but I can't see Orlando/Milwaukee letting them go. I think Deng would bridge the gap for a few years to let Johnson develop. West is getting older but he plays defense, can knock down a jumper, and is tougher than nails. Great fit next to Andre.

Lineup
PG- Jackson/Jennings/Dinwiddie
SG- KCP/Meeks/Connaughton
SF- Deng/Johnson
PF- West/Tolliver/Miller
C- Andre/Anthony
