The Detroit Pistons used a huge 37-20 third quarter to pull away from the Toronto Raptors for their fourth consecutive win, 114-101.
After a miserable first quarter, Steve Blake bounced back with a brilliant second half.
He closed his final possession before giving way to Reggie Jackson in the second quarter with a lousy drive that should have been a free layup but instead ended up in the second row. On the bench, he covered his face with a towel and left that crummy player behind.
Blake showed back up in the third quarter determined to be a different player. On his first play back, the ball circled back to him for a contested three. Nothing but net. He never slowed down, playing the virtuoso to shut the door on the Raptors.
By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, the Pistons bench was filling everything up. Reggie Bullock, finally showing up from his preseason performance, was knocking everything down and hit two straight three point shots to put the Pistons up 20 points, inspiring a Reggie Jackson belly slide to welcome his team from a Raptors time out.
Toronto was playing without Kyle Lowry, giving him a rest night even though the Pistons were on the second night of a back-to-back. They struggled to find enough playmakers without their star, leaning heavily on DeMar DeRozan. DeRozan came through early starting 6-7 from the field, but when he fizzled so did the Raptors. He went 3-14 after his hot start.
Cory Joseph contributed the Raptors losing depth with foul trouble, putting rookie third string point guard Delon Wright in position for big minutes. Wright has played well in the D-League this season and represented himself well thrust into a primary role tonight - but it wasn't enough. He finished with 30 minutes, scoring 13 with 6 assists.
The Andre Drummond-Reggie Jackson duo was instrumental in getting the Pistons enough distance for the bench to make the close.
Drummond would likely have had his sixth 20-20 game of the season if he hadn't been a spectator for the fourth quarter. He accumulated 15 points and 18 rebounds through three quarters. Jackson also had the chance to prop his feet up, playing just 28 minutes, scoring 19 points and dishing 8 assists.
The Pistons face the Spurs in San Antonio next on Wednesday.
