Detroit Pistons big man Aron Baynes will represent Austrailia at the Rio Olympics, coach Andrei Lemanis announced today.
Lemanis formally announced his 12-man squad set, and Baynes is one of several Aussie NBA players to have made the final cut. The Roar's Roje Adaimy reports that NBAers Andrew Bogut (Mavericks), Matthew Dellavedova (Bucks), Joe Ingles (Jazz) and Patrick Mills (Spurs) will headline the team. Cameron Bairstow, whom the Pistons waived late last week, also made the team.
Baynes may be the Aussies' starting pivot with Bogut still nursing a knee injury suffered during the NBA Finals, but either way, he should see a fair amount of playing time in what will be his second Olympic games. The Boomers are in the same pool as China, Serbia, Venezuela, France and the US, and will look to make a big push for the second round.
Aron's inclusion into the Australian team makes him the second Piston to compete in this year's Olympics, with rookie Michael Gbinije also set to represent Nigeria.
