The 10% Checkup - Third Edition

We have another eight games in the books, so time to check in and see how the Pistons performed statistically over that stretch of games.

Team Stats

  • The Pistons went 3-5 over an absolutely brutal stretch of schedule. Seven games were against top fifteen teams by Net Rating. Six games were on the road. It stinks that they are on a losing streak but if you'd have asked me would you take 3-5 before the games started I probably would have said yes.
  • They actually played teams evenly in the four factors except for rebounding. That feels like a strange turn of events for this team. Over the first eight games, they had a higher OREB% by about three points. Over the second eight, they had a higher OREB% by about six-and-a-half points.
Centers

  • Well that's something. The Pistons bested their opponents with Andre on the court over this stretch, but got destroyed when he sat down.
  • Those are just great number from Andre Drummond. If he keeps that up he's a top twenty player, easily. The turnovers are still a bit high but they came down a bit recently.
  • Moreland needs to get more than 17% of the defensive rebounds when he's on the floor. You'd think that'd be the Pistons biggest rebounding problem when you see his number next to Andre's, but even with that the Pistons had a better defensive rebounding percentage with Moreland on the floor than Andre.
Forwards

  • It didn't really remember Tobias being so hot over this stretch.
  • Bullock and Ellenson not playing means a lot of minutes for Stanley and Tobias.
  • Are the forwards part of the rebounding problem? Yes and no. None of them get offensive rebounds, that is true. Defensive rebounding-wise, none are special but I don't know if it kills the team. For the last 8 games Tolliver, Stanley and Harris are all in the lower-middle portion of forwards on nba.com for defensive rebounding percentage. It's probably a bit disappointing. I think you'd have expected a few more defensive boards from Stanley and Tobias since the team has gotten smaller without Leuer and Morris, but they both are getting a bit higher percentage than last year. (Drummond also playing more minutes this year, which takes a few away from everyone.)
  • The Tolliverse effect is no longer saving the bench.
Guards

  • Reggie Reggie Reggie. Still not a perfect player but more than earning his contract. I apologize for hoping to trade him for nothing just to be able to start over sooner.
  • This is not a stretch to remember for Avery Bradley. Every now and then I let myself jump ahead and wonder what they'll do with him in the offseason. I come up with "No Clue!" and stop wondering.
  • Oh I miss the Galloway bombs. I guess when you're a gunner and nothing but a gunner you're going to have hot and cold streaks.
  • Pistons guards really not getting any boards over this stretch. I took nba.com's "Guards" that played 12 minutes and 6 games over this stretch and came up with 131 players. Of those, Bradley is 130th in DREB%, Kennard is 123rd and Reggie is 119th. All below what they did the previous stretch of the season. Guess just need to hope it's a fluke. It's certainly not good enough as is if they are going to play Kennard and two other guards together.
  • They are missing out on offensive boards as well. Of these 131 players, nine got zero offensive rebounds over this stretch. Three of them were Pistons: Bradley, Smith, and Kennard. It's not like this team is counting on the guards for rebounding, but it really is a game of percentages and small numbers make a difference. An extra few rebounds each game from the guards and maybe this is a 5-3 stretch.
