So the Pistons started tanking tonight and beat a team with 53 wins with more still to go.
They started Henry Ellenson and heck, let’s go to Mike/mophatt1 in DBB Slack:
We could probably get away w putting one up now. Ish and Harris played well, Boban scored 15 points in 12min, Dre had 12 points and 12 reb, couldn't contain Harden's penetration, Capela shot 8-10 from the field, Beverly was a pest all night, Pistons lose 112-98. The only wild card is Ellenson.
Had Andre Drummond been on the court all night, probably. But tonight, Boban Marjanovic was Detroit’s man in the middle. The big big big dude put up 27 points on 12-18 shooting and 12 rebounds. He didn’t credited for any blocks, but fella shut down the interior.
And yes, Ish Smith and Tobias Harris both had solid games. Ish dropped 20 points with 5 assists, Harris had 17 points and 6 rebounds. Those two.
Let’s talk for a minute about Andre Drummond. The team’s max contract, franchise player. So there was a sequence in the first quarter that he thought he’d steal a rebound from a rookie.
Guess what happened next trip down the court.
And he followed it up with:
Boban stepped onto the court after that and started pounding the world onto fire. Drummond finished with 8 points, 9 rebounds, 4-11 shooting and 0-2 from the free throw line. Fake franchise player or...yeah, that’s about it.
But Ellenson’s first start was promising. He went for 15 points, 11 rebounds, took a lot of shots and missed plenty. But as a youngster he didn’t seem completely overmatched.
So the game was up in the air down the stretch, when the Pistons trailed by three at four minutes left. Stanley Johnson stepped up and nailed the big three pointer to tie things up.
They played each other close to the final minute, when Johnson nailed another huge three pointer with 30 seconds left to put the Pistons up three. That did it.
Next up is the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday.
