Michael Gbinije, released this offseason by the Detroit Pistons, has signed a new deal with the Golden State Warriors, according to news reports.
The former Syracuse star guard has a chance to earn the final roster spot with the Warriors or play for the Santa Cruz Warriors in the G League. There is no indication what kind of deal Gbinije signed or if there is any guaranteed money involved.
The Warriors have one two-way player already in Chris Boucher. A two-way contract player can alternate between the NBA team and the G League without counting against the team’s 15-man roster.
Gbinije is a wing with some ball handling skills and defensive potential — just the kind of player a team like Golden State would take a flyer on for wing depth. He averaged 12 points and 1.9 steals last season with the Grand Rapids Drive.
He played only 32 minutes spanning nine games with the Pistons. Detroit drafted Gbinije hoping they could turn him into a defensive-minded ultra-long point guard, but those skills never developed.
