Obviously our biggest need is a competent PG. The trade market looks pretty bleak but there does seem one reasonable option. The proposed trade involves the Nets, Hawks, and Pistons.
Nets Receive: Stanley Johnson (pending RFA) and Ish Smith (expiring)
Hawks Receive: Reggie Jackson (2 years) and Detroit's top 15 protected 2019 1st
Detroit Receives: DeMarre Carroll (expiring), Jeremy Lin (expiring), and Shabazz Napier (2 years)
Obviously this isn't amazing but it does give one above average player at PG, a cheaper Ish replacement, and a veteran SF who shoots 36% in career 3PA's.
Detroit would also gain $9 million in 2019-2020 cap space based on the $109 million projection (including Bullock's $4.75 million cap hold and Napier's salary) and the non-tax payer MLE. The 2019 draft is also shaping up rather top-heavy. It's doubtful Detroit would be able to draft an impact rotation player that overlaps with Griffin's remaining productive years. 2020 cap space is projected for $45 million (not including Bullock's contract) with five players on the books if Drummond picks up his $28.7 million player option.
Looking more at this season, I wish Detroit tanked after the Blake trade by resting him and kept their pick by making it top 10 protected. We've seen how valuable a one year tank can be for teams like the Mav's and Grizzlies. Anyways, this was me blindly throw darts at a wall ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What do you think Detroit should do and are there any realistic trades?
