Report: Gores wants Stan Van Gundy back as coach, but with changes in front office

New, comments

Adrian Wojnarowski says Gores has suggested changes that, so far, Van Gundy is resisting.

Well, that didn’t take too long.

Okay, so it did.

But we finally have some news about those meetings between Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy and owner Tom Gores. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Gores wants SVG to return as head coach, but with “structural changes to the franchise’s front office.”

Apparently, that request isn’t sitting too well with SVG, as Woj goes on to report that “Gores has suggested changes that, so far, Van Gundy is resisting.”

Feel free to speculate as to what those changes might be, but aside from tinkering with people in supporting roles or scouting positions, it looks like GM Jeff Bower may be in Gores’ crosshairs. Bower is set to meet with Gores separately this week.

There are many reasons to credit Bower and his staff with making some very shrewd moves to upgrade the roster during the past several seasons, but it’s possible that Gores is getting tired of watching Donovan Mitchell stampede through the Western Conference playoffs looking like the next Dwyane Wade, wondering if his franchise could do a better job of scouting young talent in the draft, or even coming up with a better contingency plan in case their starting point guard goes down with injury.

Will Stan Van Gundy hold his ground and stand by his man? Will SVB be a meme of the past? Is Gores trying to pave the way for former super agent Arn Tellem to exert greater influence in the front office?

We’ll just have to wait and see.

And speculate.

And have raging debates in the comments.

Play nice, fellas.
