Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul” and a Detroit music legend, died Thursday at the age of 76. There are better cultural and music writers than me who can speak on her tremendous legacy and unearth the hidden gems of her discography.
But I still want to honor her very Detroitness. One of the best things about being a Detroit sports fan is that when Detroit hosts a major event we get to trot out some of the best, most iconic singers on the plant (as long as they don’t get lazy and just dust Kid Rock off to warble some boring ass tune).
Franklin was always willing to show others how it was done, and that included the 2004 NBA Finals when the Pistons secured their third championship.
