Detroit Pistons’ NBA 2K20’s Roster Updates

It’s that time again! The first official NBA 2k20 roster update of the year is here! Many players surprised and many disappointed. Rookies around the league (not Doumbouya) got big boosts to their rating. Other players around the league showing that they’re better than their ratings. Detroit was one of the more busy teams when it came to this year’s roster update. Many Detroit players spiked up and one slipped a bit.

Risers:

Derrick Rose:

Original rating: 80 ovr

New rating: 84 ovr

This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one. Derrick Rose has been playing out of his mind so far this year. He is dealing with a minor hamstring injury, but it shouldn't affect his play once he returns.

This season in just 25 minutes he’s been averaging 20.8 points and 6.3 assists while shooting an astounding 56.2%. He is averaging a career high in PER 36 minutes averaging 30 points on the nose. Rose may rank up even more if he continues to play like this throughout the season. We can only hope that this hamstring injury is the worst part of his season.

Andre Drummond:

Original rating: 86 ovr

New rating: 89 ovr

Andre Drummond has been a complete monster in Blake’s absence. He is currently averaging a career high in points with 21.9, rebound with 18.6 (leading the league), and assists with 3.1. In addition to that, he’s putting up his best field goal percentage (58.2%) since his second season in the league. His defense has been phenomenal as well putting up a career high 2.2 blocks per game and tying his career high 1.7 assists per game. Drummond is making a great case to make the 90 ovr club very soon. Blake will not be returning against the Pacers so we can expect another big game from Andre. Drummond is making a case for defensive player of the year this year. His improved ball-handling helps his case. Drummond is ready to have the best season of his career to make the big bank. He has already surpassed Blake Griffin in rating and with his play, looks like he is only going up.

Luke Kennard:

*No 2K pictures for a lot of players*

Original rating: 75 ovr

New rating: 77 ovr

Personally, I feel Kennard should be a little higher than this. I’m feeling a 79 would be right for the third year shooting guard averaging 16.8 points per game on a career-high 42.1% three point shooting. Just one year ago, Kennard was a 72 ovr. He has shown what he can do since then. Luke Kennard this season is showing that he’s more than just a shooter. He is averaging 4.2 assists which is great numbers for a shooting guard. Someone putting up these stats should be a little higher than a 77.

To put this into perspective, Tim Hardaway Jr. is also a 77 ovr and he is putting up 10.4 points in comparison to Kennards 16.8, 1.6 assists to Kennards 4.2 and shooting 31.6% from three to Kennard’s 41.2%. This means one of them is rated wrong.

Another player, Taurean Prince is a 78 ovr who is putting up very similar stats to Kennard. He’s putting up 15 points per game with 7 rebounds and 1.7 assists and shooting 40.7%. His defense is nice, but no one can say anymore that Kennard is a burden on defense. Kennard should be at least a 78 ovr in my opinion. Taurean Prince’s stats are slightly lower than Kennard and makes up for it with better defense.

Kennard will be getting heavy minutes off the bench with Derrick Rose when the roster is fully healthy. We will see if Kennard can continue his hot streak and make a push for the 80 ovr club.

Christain Wood:

Original rating: 74 ovr

New rating: 76 ovr

After the preseason, the hype around Christain Wood was real. That hype, however, turned out to not do him justice. In just 15.1 minute per game, he’s put up 8.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and nearly a block a game. He has gotten double figures in scoring in three games and a double-double. All off the bench. His production has been crucial to Detroit who didn’t have a solid big to backup Drummond or Griffin last year, using a washed up Zaza Pachulia and (yikes) Thon Maker. Christain almost got cut from the roster for Joe Johnson this year. That would’ve been a disaster, not because Joe is bad, but we’d have no competent bigs to back-up Drummond. If Christain Wood keeps his hot start going, he may be able to move up a few more rating points.

Fallers:

Markieff Morris:

Original rating: 75 ovr

New rating: 73 ovr

This makes absolutely no sense to me. Morris has been playing solid starting-caliber basketball throughout the season. He hasn’t been necessarily impressive aside from the Knicks game, but he hasn’t been bad. He’s averaging almost 12 points on 46.5% shooting. He’s also shooting 37.1% from three and scooping up nearly four rebounds per game. These aren’t bad stats. He’s also picked it up since November. In October he averaged 11.2 points per game on 44.7% shooting, which isn’t worthy of dropping to a 73 ovr anyway and during November, he’s been averaging 12.8 points on 48.7% shooting. A 75 ovr makes perfect sense for the way he’s been playing. I don’t see how Taj Gibson could be a 77 while Morris is a 73. Taj has been averaging 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds while shooting 41.2% from the field. How is he four rating points better than Morris? He’s getting less points on worse shooting yet he’s a 77? 2K is straight-up disrespecting Markieff. He’s been having a solid season and he’s going to prove that he belongs at a 75 at the lowest.

Tim Frazier:

Original rating: 72 ovr

New rating: 71 ovr

I guess that they can do that, I mean, he hasn’t exactly impressed. He’s only played in six games, sitting out with a toe injury and will sit out tomorrow against the Pacers. He’s been averaging 4.2 points and 3.3 assists. It makes sense why 2K dropped him one because he hasn’t really show he can do anything but pass the ball. He’s a sub-par defender, and has shot an unimpressive 25.8% from the field. He has been disappointing so far, but to his defense, he hasn’t really gotten situated with his role yet and the lingering injury isn’t helping him get used to playing with his new team. Frazier may stay at a 71, or may move up a bit throughout the year, but anywhere in the low 70s seems fair for Tim.

Other players that should’ve moved up are Bruce Brown, who’s shown nice ball handling and playmaking along with his perimeter defense. Throw his ability to get to the rim and I think he deserves a rating boost or two. Tony Snell also should get moved up a rating point. Both these guys are 73s which doesn’t do their play or importance to the team justice. Tony Snell’s defense on the perimeter has been essential to Detroit and his three point shot has been very nice.

On the flip, Thon Maker, despite his solid performance against New York, should be bumped down to a 70. He is averaging a career-low in both points and rebounds per game on 40.9% shooting

It is hard to know how the ratings will change when Blake comes back. We will see how everyone’s role changes when he comes back. The rating may change drastically again, or they may stay the same.
