Blake Griffin has always fancied himself a comedian. Just as he has worked on rounding out his game with tireless work in the offseason, he’s done the same with comedy. Not content to just be “funny for an athlete,” Griffin has worked to be a solid comedic performer.
He’s been trained by some of Hollywood’s best comedians and improvisers, honed his craft with various stand-up sets and hosted comedy shows in L.A.
During a recent visit to the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Griffin flexed his comedy muscles demonstrating a commanding stage presence, expert comedic timing and the ease of a well-honed performer having a fun casual chat in front of millions of people.
And he made Jimmy Fallon look stupid and guffaw like he loves to do.
The premise was right out of something I’m sure he would love to perform at the Comedy Cellar in New York — athletes look and sound stupid not because they’re dumb but because they’re exhausted.
He added a little Tonight Show-friendly host participation and everyone ate it up. Griffin was there to promote his upcoming comedy show, “comedy. by blake” as part of Just for Laughs, one of the biggest comedy festivals in the world.
Griffin’s show will be July 25 in Montreal, and feature a new 15-minute set by Griffin as well as comedians “curated” by Griffin (with a big assist from sponsor Red Bull, I’m sure).
Proceeds help benefit the Team Griffin Foundation.
