Report: Pistons hire Troy Weaver as General Manager

The Pistons get the GM they want to lead them out of the 20-win wilderness

Ladies and Gentlemen, we got him:

Troy Weaver, the longtime front office executive for the Oklahoma City Thunder, is coming to Detroit. Weaver’s “strong history of player personnel decisions,” per Woj, including identifying Russell Westbrook as a star before he was “Russell Westbrook,” is what made him such an appealing candidate to the Pistons.

Weaver has been a perpetual name bandied about for open general manager positions, having interviewed for the Portland GM job in 2011, the Atlanta Hawks GM job in 2017, turned down an interview for the Detroit GM job in 2018, interviewed for the Washington Wizards job in 2019, and the Chicago Bulls job earlier this year. In the latest Pistons Vs. Everybody podcast (subscribe! rate! review!), I talked about why Troy Weaver not taking any of those jobs makes him perfect for the Detroit job:

There will be a press conference (press Zoom call?) to announce the hire, and I’m sure we’ll get clearer answers to questions on Weaver’s vision for this team moving forward. For now, though, I am just happy that the guy who was always VERY careful about where he wanted to be, wants to be in Detroit.

Let us know what you think of the hire in the comments.
