Weaver was hired June 18 after more than a decade as an assistant GM with the Oklahoma City Thunder under Sam Presti.
Weaver has been lauded throughout his career for his abilities in player evaluation and in player communication.
The GM position has been vacant since the firing of Stan Van Gundy and Jeff Bowers in 2018. Senior adviser to Tom Gores Ed Stefanski has handled typical GM and president of basketball operation duties since then, but now has the highly regarded Weaver in place to take on more of the load.
The team also reportedly plans to hire an additional assistant GM to replace the departed Malik Rose and Sachin Gupta, and Weaver will be involved in the personnel decision making for that role.
It was reported shortly after word got out the Pistons were looking for a permanent GM that Rose, the assistant GM at the time, was leaving the organization for a role with the NBA front office.
Today it was announced Rose will be the vice president of basketball operations with duties that include discussing league programs, rules, competitive elements and new initiatives with NBA teams and players, according to The Undefeated.
