Detroit Pistons fans want the 6-foot-5 scoring guard out of Georgia if the team wins the NBA Draft Lottery

NCAA Basketball: SEC Tournament-Georgia vs Mississippi Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

The first pick is in on Detroit Bad Boys’ 2020 NBA Draft Big Board. Anthony Edwards is the player Detroit Pistons fans want to see the team take if, by some miracle, Detroit wins the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft Lottery.

Edwards might be viewed as a safe choice, but I can’t say that I blame Pistons fans for making it. This draft not only lacks a clear No. 1 overall selection, it also lacks players who seem like huge swings that could result in taking a superstar if the gamble pays off.

Besides, Edwards has the physical, scoring and playmaking profile of the kind the Pistons have lacked, and also is the kind of player the Pistons have consciously chosen not to draft in favor of some other choices (see Kennard, Luke instead of Mitchell, Donovan).

Coming in a distant second place was LaMelo Ball with 26% compared to Edwards’ 40% tally. Ball is a born playmaker, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be a player on the next level. Fans might be afraid of the slow development of his brother Lonzo, and of his poor shooting and lack of explosion.

The first iteration of this poll was a two-man race, with 66% of the votes going to Edwards and Ball. Third was Killian Hayes by pure force of will Laz’s support has provided for the past several months. Hayes’ 10% was the only other player to net double-digit support.

If there are any surprises, it might be that Obi Toppin has a base of support I did not expect (netting 7% of the vote, and I thought Deni Avdija would be more of a dark horse pick, but he garnered just three votes.

Now, though, we must vote on spot No. 2. There is no guarantee that all Edwards’ supporters will automatically be convinced to vote for Ball as the second pick.

Plus, by popular, Florida-based demand, Aleksej Pokusevski has been added to the list of potential players to select from. Poku is currently slated to go No. 28 overall to the Toronto Raptors in ESPN’s latest mock draft. But with Bol Bol fever catching in the Orlando bubble, do-it-all 7-footers might soon be all the rage.

As always, if you would have preferred to vote for a player not listed and would like to see them included in the next poll, please let it be known in the comments.
