In the immortal words of Sheneneh Jenkins, “Oh my gooooooodness .... “
The Detroit Pistons and Martin Lawrence have teamed up to launch some Pistons gear inspired by the classic Detroit-set sitcom from the 1990s.
Martin ran for five season on Fox from 1992-97 and featured Lawrence as the titular character, a radio DJ in Detroit and was ahead of its time for embracing absurdity, a bit of anarchy and breaking the fourth wall in the name of a solid joke.
The line of merchandise will feature Martin’s iconic catchphrases “Wazzup, Wazzup, Wazzup!,” characters (many played by Martin himself including the aforementioned Sheneneh) and iconography. The limited-run items, which include jerseys, hats, shorts, sweatshirts, T-shirts and more will be available exclusively on Pistons313shop.com beginning May 14.
I can’t put into words how much I need that Detroit shirt done in the style of Martin’s opening credits.
The show embraced the city of Detroit as its backdrop and because it centered around a group of friends in their 20s and 30s, featured plenty of Pistons gear and basketball in its storylines.
“Detroit has always shown me so much love and always shows up for me,” Lawrence said in a release announcing the partnership. “From stand-up tours to fans on the street Detroit has felt like home. It’s an honor to be part of something that means so much to me to this many years later.”
The Pistons are similarly happy to have an official collab with Lawrence.
“With the city of Detroit as the show’s backdrop, ‘Martin’ became must-watch TV in the 90s,” said Mike Zavodsky, chief business officer of the Pistons. “Martin’s love for the Pistons in the show translated into passion for the team – the fact that he has a ring from the 2004 team is proof of that. We’re thrilled to partner with Martin to introduce a merchandise line that pays homage to both Martin and the show’s Detroit roots.”
